Everyone knows that there is nothing worse than trying to do DIY with cheap tools, as the finish is usually poor. Not the case with this saw. Although it is at the cheaper end of the mitre saw market, its build quality and ease of use are excellent.

To bore you with statistics, it has :
1.7kw motor, which spins at 5,000 rpm with no load.
10 inch blade
Side bars
Clamp

The 1.7kw motor is unusually large for a 10 inch saw, they are normally used on the 12 inch saws, which are too big and bulky for average DIY jobs. So this saw delivers the power but in a manageable size.

I have used mine for making picture frames, book-ends, etc., and am in the process of making a workbench. It is proving to be invaluable.

The blade can be set to cut on an angle up to 45 degrees off vertical and 45 degrees in one direction and 60 degrees in the other direction on the horizontal plane. It is perfect for making any kind of joint - you can cut any angle.

You can get blades to cut not only wood but aluminium and steel. The safety guard on it is the best I have ever seen (and I have used a lot of power tools). It never clogs with sawdust, even if the timber is wet. The guard wraps completely around the blade as soon as you lift the blade from cutting the wood. Other safety features include safety markings stamped on the baseplate to show where you can put your hands up to. If you are still dubious about having your hands near the blade, it has a clamp which will hold the wood for you so you can keep your hands well out of the way.

If you are cutting repetitive size pieces of timber, it has a sliding marker on the side arm, which you can clamp into place and butt the timber up against it and it will cut the same sized piece each time.

It has a total cutting depth of four and a half inches and a total cutting width of five and a half inches. It is just as easy to use with small or large pieces of timber.

Changing blades is no problem - you only have to slacken two screws and the centre bolt on the blade and the tools are even provided! This is easier than changing a blade on most hand-held circular saws, and a darn sight safer!

When not in use, the blade can be clamped down so that the teeth are hidden in the cutting slot in the baseplate, so are well out of the way of prying little fingers. The operation is single-handed, with both the blade release trigger and power button within easy reach of even small handed people.

The machine itself is substantial but easily portable and fits nicely on top of a Black & Decker Workmate.

It cost £199 - but it is worth shopping round for a better deal. Being a power tool freak, I am well pleased with this piece of equipment, and it’s not easy to please me!
