Powerslam, currently on issue 105, is in my opinion the premier wrestling magazinein the UK at this moment in time. Powerslam is widely available from a number of local shops but not in any supermarkets that I am aware of however, it if available from most branches of WH Smith. It’s understandable that a wrestling magazine isn’t available everywhere because wrestling isn’t as popular as it previously was. But, if you venture into WH Smith and feel like an interesting read, dig £2.60 from your pocket and buy the latest issue of Powerslam.
When looking for Powerslam it’s not hard to spot. The distinct bold pink and white POWERSLAM splashed across the header accompanied by a picture of a wrestler currently in the main light and a list of the months main articles. This month we were treated to a picture of the recently returned Stone Cold Steve Austin.
The pictures continue throughout the magazine but monthly there are full spread pictures on the inside cover, centrefold and back page inside cover. The contents page looks rather plain with just purple and green colours and a straight forward list of the contents, writers, photographers and sample pictures of various articles.
Among the monthly features are ‘What’s Going Down’ which looks at all the recent events in the WWE and other leading wrestling organisations including results of shows, an injury report and insider information from the business as a whole. Another such article is ‘On The Road’ which reports the match results of non-televised shows across the world. The we have ‘Colour Commentry’ which provides the opinions of the articles writer concerning all aspects of the business and has also provided interviews with well-known wrestlers in the past few months.
‘Flips, Whips and Quips’ is the very intelligently written column by Stately Wayne Manor. Providing a lot of sarcasm and comedy this is light relief within an otherwise serious magazine. Other frequent articles include ‘Sign Of The Times’ which lists some of the funniest signs seen at wrestling events recently and Q & A where readers can send in questions and they will be printed with answers.
Every month the rest of the magazine is dedicated to everything wrestling oriented. From articles on a single wrestler to whole companies, articles on wrestling’s past, present and future, Japanese wrestling and recently departed wrestlers this magazine has everything that the wrestling fan could ask for. Another superb part of this magazine is the sheer lack of advertising. Unlike most magazines this magazine depends solely on it’s content, 38 pages of strictly wrestling, although there are some adverts.
If you follow wrestling and wish to better understand the way in which the business works then take a peek at Powerslam to get an idea. For non wrestling fans the magazine does give a good insight into the world of wrestling and what it has become. Plenty of pictures to keep you amused if you don’t want to do too much reading this would be ideal toilet reading for people who are open-minded and for just £2.60 I’d say this magazine is better value than the predominantly advert filled Kerrang.
