Most of the exercises include translating sentences into Spanish and answering questions about yourself. I would recommend you answer the exercises in pencil, or on another sheet of paper, as I promise you will want to use this book again and again to refresh your memory!
If you are starting Spanish totally from scratch, or are just looking for simple phrases for your holiday, I would not recommend this book, unless you are using other books with it as well. However, for ... more
When I started to study Spanish I had made the, some would say stupid, decision to study it as a degree, from scratch. Although this wasn't the best idea, it really made me look at all the help books available on the market to help me with my course. You will find that if you are a beginner at Spanish, there are countless books available to get you started. However, the majority of these books focus on 'holiday phrases', booking into hotels, ordering food etc. Although this would suit some people perfectly, to get my Spanish to degree standard I needed to know the grammar, and know it well. This is where the 'Practice Makes Perfect' range comes in, and in my opinion, they are the best books on the market.
There are 4 (as far as I'm aware) books in this series. Pronouns and Prepositions (which I will look at today) Complete Spanish Grammar, Verb Tenses and Vocabulary. They all take the same basic structure, and work in the same way.
Spanish Pronouns and Prepositions, as the title suggests, focuses on pronouns and prepositions, which i found to be one of the hardest parts of learning a language. Most grammar books explain the ideas, but as there are so many differences between Spanish and English, it can be very confusing and daunting. To have a whole book dedicated to the subject was a life saver for me.
The book focuses on practicing. It is split into 3 sections, and the first two sections work in the same way. Each unit with in a section starts with an explanation of the grammar, which I always find very clear and understandable. It then gives you a number of exercises, introducing more grammar as you go along. I find this incredibly helpful, and once you have learnt the grammar, you have an opportunity to practice using it a lot, which isn't an option in most Spanish books. Most of the exercises include translating sentences into Spanish and answering questions about yourself. One of my favourite aspects of the book, is that every few units you get a small paragraph of English to translate, to ensure you're confident in using your new skills. On top of that, all the answers are in the back of the book, which makes it easy to learn without a teacher checking your answers. I also use the answer section to translate the Spanish back into English, further improving my skills. The third section of the book includes a grammar reference section, so you can look things up quickly without going through the book.
In terms of content, I think this book is very good. it focuses on everything you could need, and has a unit dedicated to 'para and por' - every Spanish students nightmare. each section is set out clearly, and i often flick through the book and practice parts i'm not too sure about.
However, for anyone who wants to learn and practice grammar, and isn't comfortable with just reading information and remembering it, this book really hammers everything into your head! If you would like to read any other reviews about this book, head over to Amazon, where I know there are a number of reviews praising these books. In my opinion, these books are absolute bargains and totally worth the money.
After learning Spanish for two years and worshiping these books, me and my friend are now living in Spain and loving it!
Thank you for reading my review, and good luck!

Review of Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Pronouns And Prepositions: Spanish Pronouns and Prepositions (Practice Makes Perfect) - Dorothy Richmond
Advantages: Lots of exercises, laid out clearly with good explanations in English. Disadvantages: No pronunciation guides.
The title may well but a beginner off purchasing this book but don't let it. It is an invaluable book in helping a learner understand the structure of Spanish sentences in order to be able to make their own sentences rather than verbatim learning. After all, pronouns and prepositions are fundamental to sentence making and this book explains everything about their meaning and use in English.
The book is quite large and is split into 3 parts - pronouns, ... ...It is predominantly an excercise book so if you prefer to work through lots of exercises to help remember your Spanish then this is definitely the book for you.
Each chapter focuses on an aspect of pronouns or prepositions. Firstly, a concise but thorough explanation and the context of the words are provided in English. This is then followed by a series of translation exercises, the answers for which are provided in the back of the book. There is ...

The practice makes perfect seriesof books: Complete Spanish Grammar - (Gilda Nissenberg), Spanish Pronouns and Prepositions - (Dorothy Richmond), Spanish Verb Tenses - ( Dorothy Richmond), I found to be of great value and clearly stated instruction.
An understaning of the verb tenses is for me an essential part of learning to speak Spanish intelligently, and therefore, the first book I bought in this series was Spanish ... ...and of the many opportunities I was given to practise, thus hammering home each lesson which, with the answers provided gave an indication of how well, or badly, I was progressing.
I soon added to my collection the other two books in the series and from then on I used the three books in tandem finding that although written by two different authors each book complemented the other. And thus my experience of learning was enhanced.
Not expensive and ...
