I was thrilled to receive a bottle of Prada eau de parfum as a Christmas gift last year. I love perfumes and although I have my favourites, I always enjoy a quick spritz of new scents when passing the counters in department stores.
When I opened the wrapping paper and saw the designer name, I was thrilled. Not, lest you be misled that I'm into designer names at all - no Prada, Gucci or Versace for me, I'm afraid! However, it was nice to think that someone had chosen this for me as a gift. Opening up the pink box, I took out an unusual bottle. Instead of being tall, it's a wide rectangular shape with the top to the left hand side, rather than the middle. The deluxe version comes with an atomiser attached but this one had a simple spray, so it's easy to use as opposed to a stopper. I sprayed a little and immediately thought it a familiar scent, although I couldn't place it. Yes, it was nice and I was pleased to have a new perfume to add to my collection.
It's described by the makers as an 'amber fragrance', with top notes including bergamot, bitter orange and mandarin, middle notes of rose and patchouli and base notes including sandalwood. Aha, that's what was familiar to me - patchouli! It brought back memories of my high school days, when a fashion erupted for patchouli oil, sold in tiny little bottles from a small local shop that was packed with all sorts of unusual items. Both sexes used this potent oil and the poor teachers must have been quite overwhelmed at classes of teenagers all liberally doused in the stuff. We all loved it of course until eventually another fad took over and the teachers could breathe easily again.
Fortunately for me, I hadn't sprayed too much of my new gift as it's extremely strong and unlike most perfumes, it doesn't seem to fade. Even this small amount however, had me trying in vain to wash it off! (out of sight of the present giver of course) What initially seemed quite pleasant became overpowering, cloying and ultimately unbearable. I couldn't get away from the smell! I have to say, forget the top notes, the overriding smell is of patchouli. For those who haven't smelt it before, it's a very pungent, exotic, spicy, sweet smell. I've discovered since that patchouli oil is quite often used in perfumes - apparently it's used in a third of women's and half of men's scents. A popular ingredient then but in my opinion, Prada eau de parfum contains too much.
And so it lay for a while on my dressing table until I thought I'd try it again but this time with a cunning plan. I held the bottle at arms length, lightly sprayed it in the air and then walked through the spray. After all, it's not too unpleasant in moderation if only it wasn't so strong. Did this work? Well no, not really. It was a little better but I could still smell it all day and when I went into my bedroom at night, where I'd sprayed it, the smell still hung in the air. A handy air freshener actually!
I would say here that I normally like strong perfumes and prefer eau de parfum to eau de toilette for this reason. Christian Dior's Poison for example is strong, yet I used to love wearing that so it's not as if I'm normally into light, florally fragrances. From what I can see it doesn't seem to be available in an eau de toilette version, which would be lighter and perhaps more wearable. There's a man's version in eau de toilette but of course that may smell completely different. Prada also have bath lotion, body lotion, shower gel and talcum powder in the range but somehow I don't think I'll be using the layering technique to build up the fragrance. I received this as a gift but I believe the 50ml eau de parfum costs about £40.
Of course, everyone's different and some people no doubt love this scent. Also, perfumes can react differently on an individual's skin and perhaps I'm just overly sensitive to the smell. If you love strong perfumes and the smell of patchouli oil, then this might just be for you.
Be warned though if you try a spray of this from the department counters - I'd recommend getting it on a card first or only spraying a tiny amount. Apologies to those who do like it but I hope I don't have to sit next to you on public transport!
Advantages: nice smell, good staying power, classy Disadvantages: powerful spray
...I got samples for the Prada perfume. At first I thought maybe it was a bit strong and that I didn't like it but then once I got used to it I actually quite liked it. It is a very expensive perfume though being Prada so I never bought it but then at Christmas I unwrapped one of my presents to find this perfume and was very happy.
Prada was founded in 1913 by Mario Prada but in 1978 Miuccia Prada the grand daughter took over and put the company to ... ...clothing and of course fragrances. Prada have only recently branched into perfume but I hope they continue as the first one I really like.
With Prada you can always expect sophistication and elegance and that is definitely what they went for when designing the bottle for the perfume. It is very simple but classic it is a thick glass rectangle which is lengthier rather than taller. It has a silver top which has the ingredients engraved into which ...

Advantages: Doesn't smell like cats pee on me, which is saying something!! Disadvantages: Run's out too quickly!
I have been wearing Prada eau de parfum now for the past 2 years. At first I only asked for it because I was going through my Prada anything and everything phase. I have to say it's one of the only perfumes that I have gone back for repeated bottles as I am one of these people that perfume usually doesn't suit. Most perfumes on me smell like they've gone off or simply bad.
The bottle itself is classically stylish, and is nice and chunky to hold. ... ...too!! The perfume itself is quite a strong heady scent, especially when you first put it on. It's what I would call a sophisticated smell and my husband says I smell like a real woman in it!! Be, sure to put the normal amount on even though it smells like it could knock your head off when you first spray it on. This is because it mellows out quite quickly leaving this lovely warm musky and sultry smell.
In most shops you find a bottle of this perfume ...
