A late period means one thing in my house, time to buy a pregnancy test. So, browsing round the chemist, the pretty pink box of the Predictor caught my eye. Noting the price, I popped it in my basket and went to pay.
On arrival home, I waved it at my husband who looked horified. And who could blame him? 'Predictor' isn't exactly an enticing name. Its actually quite scarey, like film titles such as 'Terminator' or 'Predator' . No thoughts of soft skin and baby talc when you read this box.
The box is wrapped in cellophane which proved rather difficult to remove. Once inside the box, you find the actual test is foil wrapped and there is a sheet of instructions along side it.
Basic instructions are printed on the outside of the box, and the ones inside are pretty much the same. It is suggested that you take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with the pregnancy test before you use it. Compare it with the pictures on the leaflet and box, and make sure you know how to use it.
Now, this is not rocket science. I think one glance at the test will be suffice. Its a long, white plastic stick, one end of which is removeable. On taking the end off you find a soft pink spongey bit. This is obviously the bit that you pee on. After passing water over the test, it then slides back inside the second plastic bit and the results appear.
The main thing to note is that you have to pass water over the test for at least a second. This sounds quite easy, but nerves often get the better of you and a trickle is all you can squeeze out.
When the urine stick is put back into the lid, you will see three small windows. These will slowly turn pink, one by one. this signifies that the test is working. The results will appear within four minutes, and there is clear instructions on both the box and the leaflet on how to read the results.
The first window is the indicator box. This means that it goes pink to show that the test has been activated. The second, and largest window, is the one where a dot will appear if you aare pregnant. The third window also has a dot. This will be there if you are or aren't pregnant. If there is no dot in the largest window, the third window will show that the test is complete. If you are pregnant, the dot remains in both. (sometimes the third window remains pink rather than having a dot). Even a very faint dot in the middle window indicates you are pregnant.
This test can be used from the first day after a period is missed. It claims to be as accurate as a doctors test. This means that a positive is very rarely wrong. A negativee test may be caused by hormone levels being low (very early stages of pregnancy).
The Predictor is available from chemists and some supermarkets. i bought mine in Savers for a very cheap £3.99. A two pack is only £5.99. Tesco sells them for a pound more.
As for the results, they certainly predict a busy future for me.
