Premier Manager 2, released in 1993, provides the purists with an opportunity to take charge of a football team and apply their tactical and financial skills to steer a club to success. With a series of manager simulation games available across a variety of platforms, I decided to review this game, as there are no reviews to date, and more importantly, this game introduced me to the various elements of football management.
Format
When released in the early 1990s, the PC format of this game arrived with a useful instruction manual and unique code wheels. Once installed from the floppy disk onto the PC, the game requires a code, which is obtained by matching a particular football strip requested from the main menu. The two wheels are revolved until the required kit is matched with that illustrated on the screen, and hence the correct code is obtained.
Due to the time elapsed since the 1993 release date, this game is not readily available in stores, and hence the colourful yellow box with a classic snapshot of a dressing room meeting is not housed in the major computer
retailers. However, the game is available to download from the internet; the status of this i.e. shareware, freeware is unknown to me at the time of writing.
Requirements
Basic PC 386 and above. 8MB RAM 2MB Hard-disk Mouse Sound card (Optional)
Take control
Your first task is to select a club from the Conference League to control you must open your career with a lower division club. You are allocated a small transfer budget and must elect a scout to scour the transfer markets in pursuit of new players should you believe your current squad needs strengthening. There are a series of menus in the main screen providing various options. There is an icon for the transfer market, which provides a list of all players available to purchase together with their positions, and, using your scout, you can observe their individual abilities and quote a price.
You also have the task of improving your ground to attract more spectators. There is a fax, which provides breaking news, and you are able to view detailed financial information through the traditional balance sheet and profit and loss account. Your team selection button provides details of your current selected players and tactics, and you can monitor your progress through the league table chart and various associated graphs.
After gathering your required group of players and raising the adequate finance, your must select the match button which provides a commentary, together with basic graphical images of key incidents of the match. You are charged with the responsibility of executing necessary changes during a match, and must make longer-term modifications after the match should your teams progress prove unsatisfactory.
Injuries and suspensions will hamper your progress and a physio is required in these circumstances. You make all the employment decisions and must prove your financial and tactical skills with limited resources. Should your progress prove fruitful, high quality players will offer their services to your club and further contract offers for your own services will arrive. You are also able to resign or apply for vacant positions at other clubs should serious difficulties arise.
Whether you are viewing your managerial history or hiring coaches to improve the skills of your players, perhaps dealing in the transfer market or browsing rival clubs, the detail is sufficient to keep the most ardent of football pundits occupied.
Comparisons
You should be under no illusions here this version is dated. The list of players is not therefore recent and the graphics and statistics are not comparable to the likes of Championship Manager 4. The level of detail is limited, as the game requires basic PC requirements and installed via a single floppy disk.
There are no data updates available for this game unlike the Championship Manager series, which has regular team updates. The advantage of this is realised after playing a number of seasons as players are created with random names that bear no resemblance of players today. This is a stern test of your managerial prowess.
There are no stylish 3D graphical images with realistic sounds and crowd chants. Basic noises are replicated during goals, bookings and other key incidents, but no scope for the high quality sound and visual features is available. The current legislation such as transfer windows, for example are not factored into the programming.
However, unlike the highly publicised games of today, Premier Manager 2 offers the necessary detail with convenient simplicity, which is ideal for the novice. As the game runs of the hard disk, loading is instant and navigation through the menu screens is real-time.
For a seasoned professional, this game could prove unsuitable, however there is a highly addictive nature which stems from the speed at which weeks of the season are passed. Mastering a game of this calibre will steer you towards potential success in the more advanced simulations discussed. With the little money or resources required to operate this little gem, I would recommend any football fan to offer some time to this wonderful learning tool.

I used to love this game but it was brushed aside in favour of Championship Manager after the release of a very poor Premier Manager 3! Great review, it brought back a few memories! Steve :)
