Review of of Prices Household Tin, a Scented Candle

I think most people of my age group would associate Prices candles with the dreadful power cuts England suffered in the 1970's. Regular electricity supplies would fail, plunging your household into darkness, with no warning. Any one with any common sense kept a supply of Prices (or similar brand) plain white candles handy. It had not occurred to me that Prices might make anything other than bog standard white domestic candles. I wonder if the advent of companies such as Yankee and Shearer coming into the candle market, Prices are striking back!

The Product

I came across this candle a some time ago when browsing on line for a particular candle fragrance. I wanted to buy a specific scented candle for a friend as a birthday present. In the course of my research, the Prices range caught my eye and I was intrigued. I ordered myself a Prices tin candle, I believe I paid in the region of £5 for it, which I consider to be reasonable price for the product.

Prices scented candles come in both jar styles and tins. The subject of this review is the 'Household' tin version.
The candle is designed to eliminate household odours. It is presented in an attractive, white, retro style lidded tin, with a cream lid. This is decorated with an image of a silhouette of a black cat. The image has a sort of Art Deco feel to it and once I'd finished with my candle, my daughter pinched the tin to add to her vintage advertising collection, even though it is definitely modern!

The tin is approximately 40mm high with a 70mm diameter and the candle has a burn time of around 20 hours. The candle itself is made of a creamy white coloured natural wax and it had a very good length of wick. This was lying flat against the wax when the candle was new, but it was easy enough to straighten up ready to light. The wick burnt well with no excess smoking or smouldering. The tin can become hot when the candle is burning so it makes sense to stand the tin on a heat proof surface in an area where it will not be knocked over, and of course, out of the reach of children and pets.

This candle is designed to be used to freshen your home and neutralise domestic odours. It has a really pleasant scent, a mixture of orange, lemon and thyme extracts. I found the scent was fairly long lasting and it certainly did refresh the air and get rid of unwanted odours. Having a pet dog and being a smoker, I am conscious that my home might smell unpleasant to others so do take steps to keep things smelling nice. I do not like traditional spray or plug in type of air fresheners and find candles of this type a good alternative.

My Thoughts and Conclusion

This is a very good scented candle. It has a decent burn time and the fragrance is excellent, fresh and fruity, without being cloying or intrusive. I felt the orange scent over-rode the other fragrances, fine by me as I do like this scent. The addition of thyme to the mix gives a lovely herby, woody undertone to the aroma, however I would say the candle's fragrance is predominantly a fruity one.

The fact that the candle does aid in eliminating household odours is a real plus in my opinion. The packaging is attractive, the price fair and the weight of the candle, about 120g makes it a pretty good value candle.

Prices have several other versions in the range, including a chef's candle specifically for use in the kitchen to eliminate cooking smells, and an anti tobacco candle. I have ordered the Anti tobacco version for my conservatory. I only smoke and permit visitors to smoke in the conservatory, with the door to the garden open, however the tobacco fumes can tend to filter through into the house, which is of course unpleasant.

To conclude I would recommend this Prices Household Tin candle to others.
I purchased my Prices candle on line from http://www.thecandleselection.co.uk I'd also recommend this website as a good source of interesting candles and associated products.
