...Maxtor - one of the most popular makes of mid range harddrives, available from most stores including PC World. What they fail to tell you is that Maxtorharddrives, although fast are very unreliable. In fact, Maxtorhard disk drives have an inherant head problem - no we're not talking spots - they have a tendancy to crash - locking the head to the "motor" thus disabling the drive. It will cease to be regonised by your computer and even the much rated Norton Disk Doctor will not be able to rescue it. The only option - start again or fork out £300 to ge tthe date retreived. OUCH! Better go with a seagate, Western Digital or Quantum next time!...

Advantages: Maximizes the amount of data vs the cost of the product Disadvantages: heat issues, cord connectivity, and small installation problems.
...Some people call me ignorant for using Maxtor, but I honestly only order Maxtor for my harddrives. Now the only downside to the Maxtor 500 GB is that it is an external drive that, if not careful, can overheat and cause connectivity problems, transfer speed issues, or just annoyance from when the usb gets knocked out. That being said, if you can get past the downside of have an external I would recommend this product to anyone not using a Mac. The only reason I do not recommend this to Mac owners is because Mac is the only type of computer that I myself will not touch. I have filled this thing up to about half it potential and when I do manage to full it up, I will write agian to let you know the outcome....

Advantages: One touch backups, transfereable from computer to computer, more reliable than tapes Disadvantages: bulky, installing on non-Windows XP computers, takes a long time to backup
...Upon hearing the familar metal-on-metal grinding noise from inside the computer's cases, meaning one thing, you're harddrive is going to die very soon.
Luckly, the good people at Maxtor have given us the 'Once touch external hard disk'.
The device itself is a self contained 300GB 7200 RPM MaxtorHarddrive with a USB 2.0 ( 480 Mbs) or Firewire (400 Mbs) interface although the maxium data transfer speeds are 41 MB/s for the Firewire version and 34 MB/s for USB.
Personally I think that 300GB is a bit excessive for home computer purposes, and I would recommend the smaller 200 GB version availible.
For office, work , and corperate use it is ideal. I now recommend the use of this device as a direct replacement for tape drives, when it comes to backing up servers.
The 'One touch backup feature' makes backing up important data so much...

Well what can i say. I chose maxtor because i thought it was a good named brand and would be reliable. Plus the fact they have been taken over by seagate who have been in the hard drive business forever. With these two factors you would think this would... more
