The term 'Corned Beef' derives from the 'Corns' of salt traditionally used in the curing process.

Today is our shopping day at Asda and for some odd reason I got a notion for Corned Beef, which I hadn't eaten in years but all of a sudden I really fancied getting myself some. So off I went down the tinned foods aisle in search of a good bargain on Corned Beef which can be pretty expensive at times. Here I was faced with a dilemma; my favourite brand was a shocking £1.20. So instead I settled on Princes Corned Beef which was £1.69 for a three-pack of 200g tins. This works out as 57p per tin so that wasn't that bad. And now on to the details:
The Packaging Outer Carton: The outer carton is red and dark blue on two sides with the red part stating that this is a "Bigger value 3 pack" in yellow and white writing and in smaller white writing that it contains "3 x 2009 (estimated) cans). The blue part has the Princes logo (light blue background with red writing and a wavy red and white line beneath this) prominently displayed at the top. Under this is written "Corned Beef, made from 100% beef" in white and then there is a picture of corned beef on bread surrounded by lettuce and tomatoes.
One of the other sides of this carton contains the usual nutritional information along with contact details and an advertisement for other Princes Corned Beef varieties. The remaining side of this carton refers to a serving suggestion - Corned beef, sandwich pickle, cheese and red onion toastie - which I will include in a different section with some of my own suggestions.
The tins themselves: The tins are the familiar key opening tins which most people associate with corned beef and Spam. These tins are fantastic for camping trips or spur of the moment picnics as you do not need a tin-opener. The tins are gold with the labels being the same dark blue with logo and picture as above. The back of the label again contains the nutritional information, guaranty of quality and contact details.
The top of the tin gives the best before end information - usually about 5 years. The bottom of the tin informs us that this is a product of Brazil and has passed inspection.
The Taste, Texture, Appearance and Smell.
Well anyone who has ever eaten corned beef will be aware that it doesn't look like the most appetising thing on this planet (a lump of reddy brown meat) and this also applies to Princes Corned Beef. However it has a lovely rich beefy smell and a thick texture without being stodgy or crumbly like some of the cheaper corned beefs are. The taste itself is divine and I was certainly impressed, it has a very full, strong flavour and does actually taste like beef.

Serving suggestions.
My favourite is the simplest - open can, cut required slices, put in a buttered roll and eat for lunch or a quick snack.
Cooked meal - Serve in slices with chips, honey roast ham and grated cheddar cheese - YUM
Their suggestion: Corned Beef, sandwich pickle, cheese and red onion toastie.
Ingredients:
2 slices of white bread, each lightly buttered on one side
Cheddar cheese, grated
1 tbsp sandwich pickle
2 tbsp chopped red onion
Princes Corned Beef, sliced - according to your requirement
Season to taste.
Method: Butter each slice of bread on one side. Turn one slice of bread over and place Corned Beef slices, sandwich pickle, grated cheese and chopped red onion on the unbuttered side. Put the other slice of bread on top, with the butter on the outside and cook in a toasted sandwich maker. A delicious quick and tasty snack.
Advantages: Quick and easy to serve Disadvantages: None
...white writing on and the Princes logo in red at top. There is a serving suggestion of the hash in a dish with some vegetables on a plate. On one side are the ingredients and directions for use. It can be heated up in a saucepan on the hob or in a suitable dish in the microwave. It takes 3-5 mins to heat up. It can then be served with veg of your choice or eaten on it’s own.
On opening the tin you get a smell of meat and when heated it smells even ... ...the ingredients and you have to peel, boil mash the potatoes and cut up onions and mix in the corn beef. I personally would rather open a tin. Each tin has 9.1g of fat.
