Canon consumables are horribly expensive but you can get some good deals on ebay etc. The quality of your prints will be very affected by the grade of paper that you choose. I have found that Canon Paper Pro gives the best results and the next grade down (super glossy) is good for the sizes that Paper Pro does not come in. ...The nice thing about the Canon cartridges is, if you don't believe what the computer is telling you, you can take the cartridge out - by simply opening the top of the printer - and see how much ink there is left. ...the printer itself, as my PC may not be set up correctly. The disadvantage is the amount of ink it uses. I have never used so much over the last few months,especially if you are printing out photos - it is not a cheap option. Much cheaper to get them done at processing lab or online.
