Buying Guide »

Need a new printer? Facing the immense product range available in shops both on- and offline, you’ll be spoilt for choice. From simple inkjet printers for less than £30 to multifunctional colour laser printers for more than £1,000, there’s a printer ideally suited for whatever your heart desires.

But remember to keep an eye on consequential costs when making your choice, as they can get quite high – especially with cheaper devices.

So, which printer is best for you?

What do you need your printer for?
Generally, you should follow some basic rules:
  • If the printer’s primary use will be for professional purposes or if you’re searching for a suitable device for your office, a laser printer will be the best choice.
  • If your printer will primarily be used at home or in a small office and if you’re planning to use it to print photos, you should look into inkjet printers, which are traditionally said to be better for photo printing.
  • If your digital camera has become your constant companion, the purchase of a specials photo printer might be a wise move.
  • If you use your printer not only for printing but also for scanning documents, a multifunctional device will certainly pay off.

Every device carries certain pros and cons which you need to consider in line with your individual requirements. There are some criteria, however, which you should take into account no matter what specific needs you have – these criteria include storage capacity, plug-ins and additional costs.

Yet another photograph printer

Advantages: Read Below
Disadvantages: Read Below

Well this printer came into my households life shortly before christmas 2006. We found it ideal around the christmas period as we had family round so we could easily take pictures and print them off. However there are some downfalls as they always are with these sort of printers. The colour cartridge has to be refilled every 40-60 prints which is dissapointing although to be expected i suppose. The photographs taken must be downloaded onto a computer ...
...on your computer before pictures can be printed off. The photographic paper is kept in a small pocket but when it is being printed on it goes out the back, through the front, to the back again whilst various colours are applied. Due to this the printer must be kept in a dust free environment and have sufficient space at both the front and back for the paper. Ok so i can't just critisize this product. It does have its good points. The quality of ...

Nice little printer

Advantages: Good photos
Disadvantages: if dust gets in it affects printing.

I bought my daughter one of these to ensure plenty of photo's of my new granddaughter. She has found it simple to use and it prints various different photo effects. Black and white pictures with one coloured image are particularly stunning. The downside is that the paper and ink isnt too widely available although we have bought it on line a few times. The other thing is that some photo's seem to have scratches on and this wastes paper and ink and ...

Portable printing at its best.....

Advantages: Exceptional quality pictures, Compact, Easy to use
Disadvantages: No battery, needs a fully charged camera to work properly

Canon is renowned for cameras and printers and the CP-200 brings together both fields of expertise. Within the box you receive the printer, a sample cartridge (5 prints), and 72 more as 2 packs of 36; a power supply, and the 6x4" paper holder. There is also a CD containing software to use on the PC - I've never needed to do this, as well as thick manual, but there are 9 languages in it. I found that the quick start is sufficient to use the printer ...
...prints - I use a Canon S45 camera to take the snaps. Most people I show the pictures to cannot tell its not from a photo shop. Each 6x4" takes about a minute to print - it does this with 4 passes through the printer, doing each colour separately, the final pass putting a protective coating on the picture. As I understand this final layer should provide protection from scratches, water spills etc. It certainly seems hardwearing to me. In total three ...

Canon PIXMA iP3600 - Fabulous printer. Can't get better.

Advantages: Easy to use. Clear print. Asthetically pleasing.
Disadvantages: Takes a little while to 'warm up' when turning it on.

...a variety of papers, ( from high quality glossy photo paper, to plain white paper) and have always been more than pleased with the result The printer also is very frugal with the usage of ink. A little goes a long way. I would highly recommend the Canon PIXMA. ...

Great Laser Printer with one drawback (for me)

Advantages: Great Printing results, quiet printing, economical with space required
Disadvantages: doesn't print onto medium or heavy weight cardstock

I wanted to replace my now quite ancient Lexmark inkjet with a colour laser printer. Printer Requirements ----------------------------- I mainly use my printer for "office" type work but my wife, who is an avid card maker, also uses the printer for this hobby. We only occassionally print photographs, as I think it is now so inexpensive and easy to print photos at the supermarket that it's not worth the cost of the ink to print at home. We did ...
...did want a good "workhorse" and also specifically one that would print onto cardstock (a requirement of my wife). The Results ---------------- The printer was relatively easy to install, but it is heavy and you do need to have two people to lift it out of the box. The set-up instructions were not as clear as they could be, sometimes it was hard to work out that they were now instructing you about the back of the printer, not the front, and also ...
