Buying Guide »

Need a new printer? Facing the immense product range available in shops both on- and offline, you’ll be spoilt for choice. From simple inkjet printers for less than £30 to multifunctional colour laser printers for more than £1,000, there’s a printer ideally suited for whatever your heart desires.

But remember to keep an eye on consequential costs when making your choice, as they can get quite high – especially with cheaper devices.

So, which printer is best for you?

What do you need your printer for?
Generally, you should follow some basic rules:
  • If the printer’s primary use will be for professional purposes or if you’re searching for a suitable device for your office, a laser printer will be the best choice.
  • If your printer will primarily be used at home or in a small office and if you’re planning to use it to print photos, you should look into inkjet printers, which are traditionally said to be better for photo printing.
  • If your digital camera has become your constant companion, the purchase of a specials photo printer might be a wise move.
  • If you use your printer not only for printing but also for scanning documents, a multifunctional device will certainly pay off.

Every device carries certain pros and cons which you need to consider in line with your individual requirements. There are some criteria, however, which you should take into account no matter what specific needs you have – these criteria include storage capacity, plug-ins and additional costs.

I Wanna Portrait

Advantages: It is a cheap printer with good prints
Disadvantages: The price of cartridges and how the ink fails to dry quickly

Canon Pixma ip2600 is a photo printer which is excellent value for money, but does have a small flaws. Setup Inside the box you get the printer and the power cable. You get also the inside the manual to how to use the printer and a disc which installs drivers onto the computer. Inside the printer already is the two cartridges you need, which just need the tape ripped off to make them work. The cable is easy to put in and not that difficult ...
...the middle you have the Canon logo which is dominate in the printer topping and you have underneath a rotten grey colour. The colour is quite bad considering the rest of the printer looks really nice. At the back of the printer you have where the mains adapter goes which is quite tough to get in and out. I like something which is easy to plug in and out and then to put away again but this is quite difficult. You have on the left hand side a connection ...

Canon PIXMA IX4000

Advantages: Great Picture quality, good speed
Disadvantages: Too slow, Consumes ink more

Its one of the fastest printers , I have used to this date, Its so quick in printing photos with nice picture quality and clarity even with text it had no problem with the speed. But i found that black color was not that black as expected by me. The ink consumption is faster than any printer i have used so I don't think its an economical piece. A5 borderless was not been able to print out with the printer and that is the main drawback i have felt ...

The HP Deskjet D5560 gave me back breakfast-time!

Advantages: fast, quiet, wireless
Disadvantages: a bit techy to set up

...I have never bought an HP printer for myself, as I always thought they were overpriced and clunky. This was mainly because I have had other HP models supplied by employers in the past which have been literally the size of my desk at home, and I always ended up using my own personal one instead. But this new one has changed my opinion. I won't go into techy detail, as all this stuff can be found on the hp website - www.hp.com - as well as software, ...
...useful all round, which is good as I am a nightmare when it comes to most technology. For that reason, I will speak in purely laymans terms! This is a good printer. The design is functional, but not ugly - its black, quite sleek and compact and fits ok on a wide shelf, rather than needing a whole desk of its own. The build quality is plasticky, but not flimsy like some others. The paper is fed in through a slot in the front, and it spews out the ...

Great wide-format printer for the price.

Advantages: Great finished prints at home
Disadvantages: Noisy and ink is pricey.

...I debated between a Canon, HP and Epson wide format printer. I have had HP's and always got excellent results from it. I needed to upgrade to the wide format for photo scrapbooking. I took the chance on the HP because it was a mid-priced unit. I really wanted the networked version, but in all reality, if I'm printing 12x12 and larger prints, I'm going to be sitting at my desk anyhow. Maybe if you have multiple computers that want to use it, the network ...
...Easy set up out of the box. Gave it a 4 due to the noise and how expensive the ink tanks are to buy. I spend almost $300 on HP ink. 8 separate colors, so you don't replace three colors when one runs out. I like that. It's fast too. ...

MUST BUY!!! PROS AND CONS

Advantages: The best high res print outs
Disadvantages: Maintenance costs.

The most beautiful printer I have EVER bought! Cleanest prints! The pros of this printer are: 1-Great print quality (Actual photo standard unlike some other printer's claims out there) 2- Very quiet 3-Beautiful model The cons of this printer are: 1- 8 inkcartridges, , all of which are very expensive to replace 2- Awkward feeding method, not the traditional method of feeding manually so may take some getting used to. 3- Very difficult interfacing, ...
...faults the end product is well worth the buy. Cost wise it's not completely out of the world which was one of the main attractions, however the maintenance cost of the printer is something to watch as I have just spent £300 over one year just on inks. Despite this, a must buy for any type of graphics/architecture firm/students. ...
