Buying Guide »

Need a new printer? Facing the immense product range available in shops both on- and offline, you’ll be spoilt for choice. From simple inkjet printers for less than £30 to multifunctional colour laser printers for more than £1,000, there’s a printer ideally suited for whatever your heart desires.

But remember to keep an eye on consequential costs when making your choice, as they can get quite high – especially with cheaper devices.

So, which printer is best for you?

What do you need your printer for?
Generally, you should follow some basic rules:
  • If the printer’s primary use will be for professional purposes or if you’re searching for a suitable device for your office, a laser printer will be the best choice.
  • If your printer will primarily be used at home or in a small office and if you’re planning to use it to print photos, you should look into inkjet printers, which are traditionally said to be better for photo printing.
  • If your digital camera has become your constant companion, the purchase of a specials photo printer might be a wise move.
  • If you use your printer not only for printing but also for scanning documents, a multifunctional device will certainly pay off.

Every device carries certain pros and cons which you need to consider in line with your individual requirements. There are some criteria, however, which you should take into account no matter what specific needs you have – these criteria include storage capacity, plug-ins and additional costs.

Printing on the move

Advantages: Small and portable, fun (but the novelty soon wears off), cheap to buy, needs no ink
Disadvantages: Paper is very expensive, picture quality not up to standard, it's no more than a gadget

...is it? The Polaroid Pogo is a portable printer that is designed solely to print digital photos. Historically the Pogo was only available in black but it is available in other limited addition colours, at an additional cost. The Technology The Pogo uses the up-to-date “ZINK” technology, which Polaroid claims is “ an amazing new way to print in full colour without the need for ink cartridges or ribbons”. This new technology is a major breakthrough ...
...10 sheets, it is expensive. Polaroid has a monopoly with this sort of paper so there is no competition and no chance of other manufacturers being able to undercut Polaroid and get a price war going. Using the Pogo The Pogo is exceptionally easy to use and anyone will have it up and running in a matter of seconds. It is one of the few items available where you don’t even need to read the instruction manual to work out how to get the product ...

Reliable, Reasonably priced, Wireless and a Great print quality!!

Advantages: One of the few cheap photoprinters which can connect wirelessly!!!!!
Disadvantages: Had trouble setting it up wirelessly to many computers but once up and running its a great printer

...market, in my opinion the HP PhotoSmart D7460 is very reasonably priced. It has a great print quality that never ceases to impress, moreover the ink can be bought at a reasonable price - eg. from ebay - (so long as you don't buy HP legit ink - which realy doesnt make much difference). Additionaly it is quite a fast printer so can be used at ease for everyday printing of work ect.!!!! It features an inbuilt memory card reader so you can print directly ...
...change your settings. Conveniently the HP PhotoSmart D7460 has seperate trays for regular A4 paper and your smaller photo paper so you dont have to keep on switching them round all the time!!!!!! And finally, what made me buy this printer originally it can conect wirelessly to multiple printers. Unfortunately this was the only area i ever experienced any difficulties however after a bit of persistance i got it up running fine and am elated i made ...

Excellent Photo Printer

Advantages: Compact, portable, wireless, preview screen, easy to use.
Disadvantages: None really, but make sure you dont overpay, £140 is a good price.

...very happy. The HP PhotoSmart 385 is quite compact and very portable as it can be used wireless through USB and bluetooth connections. Its speed is ok but this is to be expected with a quality colour photo printer. The preview screen is the best feature of this printer allowing you to view before you print. This photo printer also includes 32 MB of RAM so some of your photos can be stored for printing in the future. When bought the printer comes ...
...your photos don't forget to include prices replacement cartidges and printing paper when deciding whether to buy or not. With prices starting at £139.46 this is a good buy and you wont be disapointed with the results. Overall i am still extremely happy with this printer as i have never had any trouble at all, therefore i recommend it to all people looking for a photo printer. Enjoy! ...

Polaroid PoGo - instant photography for the 21st Century?

Advantages: portable, good print quality, works well with most modern phones/cameras
Disadvantages: Zink paper hard to find on High Street, sticky-backed paper has poor adhesion on some surfaces

...that, in my view, since it seems that Polaroid will make most profit from paper sales, the price you pay for PoGo itself has to reflect this. Perhaps if you think of POGO/ZINK in the same terms as RAZORS/BLADES & PRINTERS/CARTRIDGES you'll be a contented customer. Otherwise... Recommended! ...

Epson Stylus Photo R300 - Good, reliable printer.

Advantages: Various settings, easy to use.
Disadvantages: Bulky, takes up a lot of room.

This is a good, reliable printer, ideal for use at home. Although it markets itself as a photo printer, settings can be adjusted so that 'best picture' printing is not used for plain text or draft copies. It is easy to use, however it can sometimes be unresponsive to commands and buttons may need to be pressed several times - However mine is now several years old. The printer is quite bulky and does take up quite a bit of room when in use, however ...
