Buying Guide »

Need a new printer? Facing the immense product range available in shops both on- and offline, you’ll be spoilt for choice. From simple inkjet printers for less than £30 to multifunctional colour laser printers for more than £1,000, there’s a printer ideally suited for whatever your heart desires.

But remember to keep an eye on consequential costs when making your choice, as they can get quite high – especially with cheaper devices.

So, which printer is best for you?

What do you need your printer for?
Generally, you should follow some basic rules:
  • If the printer’s primary use will be for professional purposes or if you’re searching for a suitable device for your office, a laser printer will be the best choice.
  • If your printer will primarily be used at home or in a small office and if you’re planning to use it to print photos, you should look into inkjet printers, which are traditionally said to be better for photo printing.
  • If your digital camera has become your constant companion, the purchase of a specials photo printer might be a wise move.
  • If you use your printer not only for printing but also for scanning documents, a multifunctional device will certainly pay off.

Every device carries certain pros and cons which you need to consider in line with your individual requirements. There are some criteria, however, which you should take into account no matter what specific needs you have – these criteria include storage capacity, plug-ins and additional costs.

The Dymo 400 saves me so much time, it is a good buy

Advantages: Prints quickly, easy to use, no ink, time saver
Disadvantages: A little expensive to run for some

The Dymo Labelwriter has been available in various models for a long time now. Many grumble at the limited use, plus the fact that you can use only Dymo labels with the device. Well, whilst this is true, you should really look at this device as a great time saving device, rather than money saving. I picked up a Labelwriter 400 just recently. I had the next model up before, but sold it on for a very good price. Within a week of selling it, I wished ...
...I copy, paste into the Dymo application, then print. Attach the label and I am done. Probably 15 seconds, instead of one minute. So on a typical day that saves me ten minutes, or five hours a month. So in two months, I class this little printer as paid for. Of course it is cheaper to write your addresses on packages and letters, but if you have loads to do, this is more accurate and a lot quicker. NB. I am the original author of this review on dooyoo ...

Ideal for an eBay Business

Advantages: Saves time, Quick and easy to use, No need for ink
Disadvantages: Do need to buy labels

...easier by buying myself a DYMO LabelWriter 400 Turbo, ironically, bought through eBay for around £70. I'd known about the DYMO brand and their portable handheld label printers, as well as these little desktop label printers so knew they were good. SETTING UP Setting up was the same as any other printer with a USB connection. I installed the software on my PC, plugged the printer's power cable into the mains and then plugged the USB cable from the ...
...new printer icon for the DYMO to my printer list. Lastly, I loaded the roll of labels (included), which is quite easy to do and there's even a label on the inside of the printer with diagrams showing you how to load the labels properly. USAGE The DYMO Label software is very easy to use. Simply type or copy and paste what you want on the label and then press the Print button to shoot the label out of the printer. It's very quick to print and can shoot ...

Printing on the move

Advantages: Small and portable, fun (but the novelty soon wears off), cheap to buy, needs no ink
Disadvantages: Paper is very expensive, picture quality not up to standard, it's no more than a gadget

...is it? The Polaroid Pogo is a portable printer that is designed solely to print digital photos. Historically the Pogo was only available in black but it is available in other limited addition colours, at an additional cost. The Technology The Pogo uses the up-to-date “ZINK” technology, which Polaroid claims is “ an amazing new way to print in full colour without the need for ink cartridges or ribbons”. This new technology is a major breakthrough ...
...10 sheets, it is expensive. Polaroid has a monopoly with this sort of paper so there is no competition and no chance of other manufacturers being able to undercut Polaroid and get a price war going. Using the Pogo The Pogo is exceptionally easy to use and anyone will have it up and running in a matter of seconds. It is one of the few items available where you don’t even need to read the instruction manual to work out how to get the product ...

Canon Pixma iP4500

Advantages: Quiet, fast, quality prints, reliable paper feed, will take cheaper ink cartridges.
Disadvantages: Not all fault codes listed; early mechanical failure.

While I have been very pleased with this printer, it has failed after just 15 months of light use. The fault light flashed 12 times, and guess which fault signal was not in the manual? Googled it and found a clue. Checked the small sponge pads under the printer head, where it rests, and found that the left hand one was raised, not flat. Was able to get it right with a bit of awkward fiddling, and printing resumed. It happened again, and was able ...

Samsung CLX-3160N - the least reliable printer I've ever used

Advantages: Perhaps it will burn well?
Disadvantages: Unreliable, unreliable, unreliable...

This printer jams at VERY frequent intervals; in fact I've given up trying to use the paper feeder, I have to feed it a page at a time and give it a gentle push. This happens with any type of paper - plain 80gsm, 160 gsm card stock, sticky label paper - you name it, the CLX-3160 can jam it. That's the first hurdle. But even when you get the wretched thing to feed, the print quality is EXTREMELY unreliable, particularly with card stock; but blocks ...
...a postage label, a barcode, anything like that) are very often patchy. I've given up trying to measure its failure rate on printing card - it's easier to measure its success rate, which has now fallen well below 50%. In short, do not buy this piece of garbage at any price. You will regret it. If I could give it negative stars I would. ...
