Buying Guide »

Need a new printer? Facing the immense product range available in shops both on- and offline, you’ll be spoilt for choice. From simple inkjet printers for less than £30 to multifunctional colour laser printers for more than £1,000, there’s a printer ideally suited for whatever your heart desires.

But remember to keep an eye on consequential costs when making your choice, as they can get quite high – especially with cheaper devices.

So, which printer is best for you?

What do you need your printer for?
Generally, you should follow some basic rules:
  • If the printer’s primary use will be for professional purposes or if you’re searching for a suitable device for your office, a laser printer will be the best choice.
  • If your printer will primarily be used at home or in a small office and if you’re planning to use it to print photos, you should look into inkjet printers, which are traditionally said to be better for photo printing.
  • If your digital camera has become your constant companion, the purchase of a specials photo printer might be a wise move.
  • If you use your printer not only for printing but also for scanning documents, a multifunctional device will certainly pay off.

Every device carries certain pros and cons which you need to consider in line with your individual requirements. There are some criteria, however, which you should take into account no matter what specific needs you have – these criteria include storage capacity, plug-ins and additional costs.

Epson R2880... Superb printer and well worth the premium price

Advantages: Well built, superb quality prints
Disadvantages: You have to switch black inks for glossy and matte finishes

I ordered myself an Epson R2880 from Amazon, they had almost the best price £499.99 delivered. At the time, they also had Epson 3 year extended warranty packs for £35, so I grabbed one of these too. The printer was delivered free in three days. Upon receipt and opening the massive box, it was instantly apparent that the R2880 is built really well. It has some real weight to it, and the panels all line up superbly. The opening top lid opens smoothly ...
...the latest version from the Epson website, so you are right up-to-date. You can also install extra software too, like a photo manager, easy print application and CD print application. I just went for the printer driver (Mac version for me) and it installed very quickly. I was able to do my first test print within about ten minutes of unpacking the printer. It showed no clogged nozzles or problems. Onto a photo and I printed a duotone onto fine art ...

Disadvantages: Large very very large, costly Replacement toner

...having previously had a Small Epson Colour inkjet which like most epson injet printers had suffered the blocked print head of death i also had a small samsung black and white laser printer which needed a new toner cartridge which would have cost more than i paid for the printer in the first place so i decided to go for the all in one option of a colour laser in recent years the costs of colour laser printers has dropped greatly and this model cost ...
...high profile brand such as Epson set up took a while as it wasn't as simple as open the top and put the cartrdges in like you would with an inkjet instead having to press buttons and wait for the internals of the machine to get ready for the next colour fitting it into my office took some thinking about the foot print of the printer is huge its currently located on a filing cabnet but still over hangs the sides Paper jams are extreemly few and far ...

Simply brilliant!

Advantages: A3+ capability, CD/DVD printing function, Resolution, Pict Bridge Port, Colour depth.
Disadvantages: Bulky (but to be expected?), no ISB cable or firewire port, Plastic build.

...☼ My long lived Epson C42 plus gave up the ghost a while back so I decided to invest in a new printer. I’ve stayed loyal to Epson as there were no alternatives similar in specification and ability out on the market just now in the same price bracket as the Stylus 1400. I chose this printer as I want a printer that can print high quality photographs from digital and scanned photographs, something capable of A3 print size to print technical ...

Epson Aculaser C2800N

Advantages: Fast, high quality printouts.
Disadvantages: Bulky, no real extra features, just a printer.

This is an ideal printer for an office situation, however, due to it's bulk, I wouldn't recommend this for a home printer. Picture quality Pretty good, it prints well both in black and white and in colour. The printer prints in A4 which is the size of paper most people prefere to use. It is also capable of printing envelopes of sizes International B5 (176 x 250 mm), International C5 (162 x 229 mm) and International DL (110 x 220 mm) . 5/5 ...
...and white pages per minute and 20 colour pages per minute. This speed was essential in my workplace, where arguments over printing rights are very prone to occour. This printer has certainly made the office a quieter place to be. It is also capable of holding 400 sheets so reloads are not required too often. 5/5 Reliabilty Where I work, this printer has definatly been put through its paces, printing almost non-stop and roughed about by in ...

Pretty good

Advantages: Excellent for printing out pictures straight from the memory card
Disadvantages: Slow turning on

Well, what can i say its a printer........................ but a bloody good one. Lets face it, it does look good, i love the small lcd screen in the front. Erm i think the printing quality is excellent, and the ability to vary it by selecting the quality you want and what type of paper you want to use it for is useful, especailly if you want to just print out something rough and don't want to waste ink, which is another thing, the ink doesn't seem ...
