Buying Guide »

Need a new printer? Facing the immense product range available in shops both on- and offline, you’ll be spoilt for choice. From simple inkjet printers for less than £30 to multifunctional colour laser printers for more than £1,000, there’s a printer ideally suited for whatever your heart desires.

But remember to keep an eye on consequential costs when making your choice, as they can get quite high – especially with cheaper devices.

So, which printer is best for you?

What do you need your printer for?
Generally, you should follow some basic rules:
  • If the printer’s primary use will be for professional purposes or if you’re searching for a suitable device for your office, a laser printer will be the best choice.
  • If your printer will primarily be used at home or in a small office and if you’re planning to use it to print photos, you should look into inkjet printers, which are traditionally said to be better for photo printing.
  • If your digital camera has become your constant companion, the purchase of a specials photo printer might be a wise move.
  • If you use your printer not only for printing but also for scanning documents, a multifunctional device will certainly pay off.

Every device carries certain pros and cons which you need to consider in line with your individual requirements. There are some criteria, however, which you should take into account no matter what specific needs you have – these criteria include storage capacity, plug-ins and additional costs.

Epson R2880... Superb printer and well worth the premium price

Advantages: Well built, superb quality prints
Disadvantages: You have to switch black inks for glossy and matte finishes

I ordered myself an Epson R2880 from Amazon, they had almost the best price £499.99 delivered. At the time, they also had Epson 3 year extended warranty packs for £35, so I grabbed one of these too. The printer was delivered free in three days. Upon receipt and opening the massive box, it was instantly apparent that the R2880 is built really well. It has some real weight to it, and the panels all line up superbly. The opening top lid opens smoothly ...
...the latest version from the Epson website, so you are right up-to-date. You can also install extra software too, like a photo manager, easy print application and CD print application. I just went for the printer driver (Mac version for me) and it installed very quickly. I was able to do my first test print within about ten minutes of unpacking the printer. It showed no clogged nozzles or problems. Onto a photo and I printed a duotone onto fine art ...

Simply brilliant!

Advantages: A3+ capability, CD/DVD printing function, Resolution, Pict Bridge Port, Colour depth.
Disadvantages: Bulky (but to be expected?), no ISB cable or firewire port, Plastic build.

...☼ My long lived Epson C42 plus gave up the ghost a while back so I decided to invest in a new printer. I’ve stayed loyal to Epson as there were no alternatives similar in specification and ability out on the market just now in the same price bracket as the Stylus 1400. I chose this printer as I want a printer that can print high quality photographs from digital and scanned photographs, something capable of A3 print size to print technical ...
...at £9.45 each for oem Epson cartridges. ☼ Packaging ☼ The box it comes packed in is a bit bulky as it is an A3 printer though it features carry handles to make life easier. It is well styled and describes key points of the printer in different languages. My box contained: ☺Software CD ☺Six ink cartridges (described later) ☺Power cable ☺Warranty Card ☺Quick Start Guide ☺CD print tray contraption ...

Good luck geting this to work

Advantages: When it works it prints better photos than a 4 year old can
Disadvantages: It's always out of ink. Always.

Do not buy this printer. There are 8 ink cartridges, and one will always be empty. The prints are not professional quality, and since the ink cartridges need constant replacing, your prints will cost about $10 each. Snapfish will print better quality photos for a fraction of the price. To make matters worse there does not appear to be a way to print documents in black and white, so when you get tired of paying $10 for every sheet you print you will ...
...The printer will simply stop working until you replace one of the $8 cartridges. Once you replace it it will go back into its nozzle-cleaning subroutine and thereby empty another cartridge before you can print anything. Save your money. Let a photo-printing service print your photos. Get a cheap monochrome laserjet. They never break. ...

Poor form from Epson

Advantages: Prints documents
Disadvantages: Speed and quality

What is it that youy want out of an inkjet printer? - something that prints good quality prints fairly quickly and doing this quietly. After buying this model for around £60, this is what i expected, even if it was not absolutely perfect, being relatively cheap. It is a basic inkjet printer that connects to your computer via. a USB connection. There are 2 ink cartridge slots, one for colour and one for black and white. This is very simple but it ...
...600 pages and the colour should last for 300 pages. This is promising but its simplicity in design and features are real indicators of what i believe is a poor machine. The first problem which i have found is that the print speed is extremely slow. Fow black & white the speed is meant to be 14 ppm (pages per minute) and for colour it is supposed to be 13.9 ppm. This is probarbly true if it printed continually but it always seems to stall mid way ...
