Buying Guide »

Need a new printer? Facing the immense product range available in shops both on- and offline, you’ll be spoilt for choice. From simple inkjet printers for less than £30 to multifunctional colour laser printers for more than £1,000, there’s a printer ideally suited for whatever your heart desires.

But remember to keep an eye on consequential costs when making your choice, as they can get quite high – especially with cheaper devices.

So, which printer is best for you?

What do you need your printer for?
Generally, you should follow some basic rules:
  • If the printer’s primary use will be for professional purposes or if you’re searching for a suitable device for your office, a laser printer will be the best choice.
  • If your printer will primarily be used at home or in a small office and if you’re planning to use it to print photos, you should look into inkjet printers, which are traditionally said to be better for photo printing.
  • If your digital camera has become your constant companion, the purchase of a specials photo printer might be a wise move.
  • If you use your printer not only for printing but also for scanning documents, a multifunctional device will certainly pay off.

Every device carries certain pros and cons which you need to consider in line with your individual requirements. There are some criteria, however, which you should take into account no matter what specific needs you have – these criteria include storage capacity, plug-ins and additional costs.

Good luck geting this to work

Advantages: When it works it prints better photos than a 4 year old can
Disadvantages: It's always out of ink. Always.

Do not buy this printer. There are 8 ink cartridges, and one will always be empty. The prints are not professional quality, and since the ink cartridges need constant replacing, your prints will cost about $10 each. Snapfish will print better quality photos for a fraction of the price. To make matters worse there does not appear to be a way to print documents in black and white, so when you get tired of paying $10 for every sheet you print you will ...
...The printer will simply stop working until you replace one of the $8 cartridges. Once you replace it it will go back into its nozzle-cleaning subroutine and thereby empty another cartridge before you can print anything. Save your money. Let a photo-printing service print your photos. Get a cheap monochrome laserjet. They never break. ...

Epson Stylus Pro 4800 I recently required a good professional printer for office use and one that had firewire connectivity and also one with a high resolution. Having dealt with epson products before,i thought i'd give this one a try as they seem to be good overall. The main feature of this printer is the high resolution of this printer which is 2880x1440 dpi and that is is capable of printing A3 size as well as thre standard A4 size.It is also ...

Excellent printer for Artists and Photographers...

Advantages: Print Quality, larger Size paper, good software included.
Disadvantages: Noisy when printing, cartridges run out quickly.

...I decided to purchase my Epson Stylus Photo R1800. Overall I have been extremely pleased. The price is a tad high but if you are using it like I am then it can save you a huge amount of money in the long run. For my prints I need to achieve the highest quality I can, my R1800 has passed with flying colours. Photographs come out crisp and sharp, the colours are near perfect and are very bright. For my paintings I have been extremely happy with the ...
...use, I personally use the Epson Premium Glossy and Heavyweight Matte papers. I do strongly suggest to only use the original papers and products to get the best quality, other brands of paper may not be suitable to use with this printer. There are also extras (although I have not used them), you can print onto CDs and i think Epson have special papers so you can print tranfers for t-shirts. On the CD you get with the printer there are a number of ...

Polaroid PoGo - instant photography for the 21st Century?

Advantages: portable, good print quality, works well with most modern phones/cameras
Disadvantages: Zink paper hard to find on High Street, sticky-backed paper has poor adhesion on some surfaces

...that, in my view, since it seems that Polaroid will make most profit from paper sales, the price you pay for PoGo itself has to reflect this. Perhaps if you think of POGO/ZINK in the same terms as RAZORS/BLADES & PRINTERS/CARTRIDGES you'll be a contented customer. Otherwise... Recommended! ...

Epson Stylus Photo R300 - Good, reliable printer.

Advantages: Various settings, easy to use.
Disadvantages: Bulky, takes up a lot of room.

This is a good, reliable printer, ideal for use at home. Although it markets itself as a photo printer, settings can be adjusted so that 'best picture' printing is not used for plain text or draft copies. It is easy to use, however it can sometimes be unresponsive to commands and buttons may need to be pressed several times - However mine is now several years old. The printer is quite bulky and does take up quite a bit of room when in use, however ...
