Buying Guide »

Need a new printer? Facing the immense product range available in shops both on- and offline, you’ll be spoilt for choice. From simple inkjet printers for less than £30 to multifunctional colour laser printers for more than £1,000, there’s a printer ideally suited for whatever your heart desires.

But remember to keep an eye on consequential costs when making your choice, as they can get quite high – especially with cheaper devices.

So, which printer is best for you?

What do you need your printer for?
Generally, you should follow some basic rules:
  • If the printer’s primary use will be for professional purposes or if you’re searching for a suitable device for your office, a laser printer will be the best choice.
  • If your printer will primarily be used at home or in a small office and if you’re planning to use it to print photos, you should look into inkjet printers, which are traditionally said to be better for photo printing.
  • If your digital camera has become your constant companion, the purchase of a specials photo printer might be a wise move.
  • If you use your printer not only for printing but also for scanning documents, a multifunctional device will certainly pay off.

Every device carries certain pros and cons which you need to consider in line with your individual requirements. There are some criteria, however, which you should take into account no matter what specific needs you have – these criteria include storage capacity, plug-ins and additional costs.

What a performance by Brother

Advantages: Affordable, good quality,
Disadvantages: USB connection only

...printers I plumped for the Brother HL-2030. It also has its bigger 'brothers' (sorry pun unintended at time of writing) the HL-2040 and HL-2070, but I didn't think the 2040 offered much more for the money, and whilst I would have ideally liked a network printer it was out of my budget. So - to the main point of this review - what is it like??? *** Appearance *** It comes packaged well, in a sturdy box, with the instructions, and driver CDs easily ...
...in a plain (grey) get-on-with-the-job way. It is very small, official dimensions list it as being W 371mm, D 361mm, H 166mm. And it has an integrated paper tray holding 250 sheets. All this make it a compact, and lightweight device able to take its place on the desktop without being an eye-sore, or tucked on a shelf/under a desk. *** Installation *** The printer comes with two sets of driver CDs. One for Windows Vista, and one for Windows XP and ...

A good starter

Advantages: Fast for the money with in-built duplex
Disadvantages: Relatively noisey

I purchased a brother HL-5150D a year or so ago and have been very happy with it. It was bought to replace an old epson inkjet and the quality of the printouts it produces are much sharper and crisper than an inkjet could ever manage. It can also print at a much higher speed. I would say the the claimed 20ppm is not all what it appears. This is if only 5% of the total surface is printed and you happen to be printing envelopes. However it can still ...
...for printing A4 decomuents is around 12ppm or about 5 is duplexing. I have said that it is however slightly noisey. This is only when in operation and it is very quiet while not in use. It even powers down after a few minutes to save electricity. The only advice I would give to you is to buy proper laser printer paper. I made the error of continuing to use normal inkjet paper and it curls. Its to do with the heat used by the laser printer, so get ...

Epson Stylus Photo R300 - Good, reliable printer.

Advantages: Various settings, easy to use.
Disadvantages: Bulky, takes up a lot of room.

This is a good, reliable printer, ideal for use at home. Although it markets itself as a photo printer, settings can be adjusted so that 'best picture' printing is not used for plain text or draft copies. It is easy to use, however it can sometimes be unresponsive to commands and buttons may need to be pressed several times - However mine is now several years old. The printer is quite bulky and does take up quite a bit of room when in use, however ...

...standard when produced by the HP Officejet 6210. I think that this is a great machine and has made my uni life and work so much easier as I have everything I need all in one package. I Wanna Portrait

Advantages: It is a cheap printer with good prints
Disadvantages: The price of cartridges and how the ink fails to dry quickly

Canon Pixma ip2600 is a photo printer which is excellent value for money, but does have a small flaws. Setup Inside the box you get the printer and the power cable. You get also the inside the manual to how to use the printer and a disc which installs drivers onto the computer. Inside the printer already is the two cartridges you need, which just need the tape ripped off to make them work. The cable is easy to put in and not that difficult ...
...the middle you have the Canon logo which is dominate in the printer topping and you have underneath a rotten grey colour. The colour is quite bad considering the rest of the printer looks really nice. At the back of the printer you have where the mains adapter goes which is quite tough to get in and out. I like something which is easy to plug in and out and then to put away again but this is quite difficult. You have on the left hand side a connection ...
