Buying Guide »

Need a new printer? Facing the immense product range available in shops both on- and offline, you’ll be spoilt for choice. From simple inkjet printers for less than £30 to multifunctional colour laser printers for more than £1,000, there’s a printer ideally suited for whatever your heart desires.

But remember to keep an eye on consequential costs when making your choice, as they can get quite high – especially with cheaper devices.

So, which printer is best for you?

What do you need your printer for?
Generally, you should follow some basic rules:
  • If the printer’s primary use will be for professional purposes or if you’re searching for a suitable device for your office, a laser printer will be the best choice.
  • If your printer will primarily be used at home or in a small office and if you’re planning to use it to print photos, you should look into inkjet printers, which are traditionally said to be better for photo printing.
  • If your digital camera has become your constant companion, the purchase of a specials photo printer might be a wise move.
  • If you use your printer not only for printing but also for scanning documents, a multifunctional device will certainly pay off.

Every device carries certain pros and cons which you need to consider in line with your individual requirements. There are some criteria, however, which you should take into account no matter what specific needs you have – these criteria include storage capacity, plug-ins and additional costs.

better than office ones.

...in one printer from the Lexmark company, I actually got the chance to test this one a few weeks before Christmas, so here’s what I thought of it. Firstly it looks fantastic, and you can tell this is a more modern one by its cool square shape and shiny plastic panels. But the main thing I like about the design of this, is that it comes in different sections, what I mean by this is that there seems to be three different parts to it, firstly ...
...section at the bottom, then finally the screen part, this is what has the screen, the buttons and some memory card readers on it. And all of these sections are clearly different cubes and I just think it makes it look a lot cooler and more modern. This really is a space saving device, you would usually have to have a printer, and a scanner, which would both be around the same size and take up double the space of this one handy device. Also they ...

Cheapest printing you'll ever do

Advantages: Very very VERY cheap to run, if you know what you are doing. Reasonable quality
Disadvantages: No USB cable supplied

Bought for printing out mainly text as I was starting college, upon unboxing I found that there was no black ink cartridge supplied. However, if you scout around amazon, you will find that number 17 and 27 ink cartridges are extremely cheap, so I ordered a no 17 black for around £7. After having done so, the printer was still cheaper than most of the competition. I now mainly use it for photo printing on glossy 4x6 paper. For this the quality is ...
...of this printer is the refill possibilities. The coloured caps come off the cartridges and they are very easy to refill. I run mine - I kid you not - on food colouring. There is no reason why not, the colours printed are rich and if it ever breaks the print head, the cartridge would have been in the bin long ago so it is no loss (the print head is built in to every cartridge). I have done around 80 4x6 pictures as well as some A4 pictures since buying ...

office and home printer

Advantages: range of features
Disadvantages: speed

...around your computer table. Lexmark have previously made a lot of printers and quite a lot of all in ones too. This Lexmark X9350, is a great all in one designed as a top end home office, or home printer and can handle a lot of use and a lot of different tasks you throw at it. The look of this printer is excellent, its silver and white plastic body looks great and very modern, so it wouldn't look out of place in an office or at home. Everything ...
...somewhat futuristic cube. The printer layout is designed so well. At the top is the auto document feeder, this can take up to 50 pages of paper, and it keeps the documents nicely tucked away at the top of the printer. Beneath this is the scanner part of the printer. This an scan A4 sized documents and is so easy to use. It really is just the case of pressing the scan button and it scans the document straight away. You can then open the who top, ...

OK for under £40

Advantages: cheap, good for black ink, easy to buy cartridges, "low ink" warning
Disadvantages: annoying software, not so good for colour printing or high quality stuff

...this option from within the Lexmark options screen (via Control Panel), unless you like to hear "Printing started!" in chirpy American every time you press print. Usefully, it'll monitor ink levels and warn you when they get low, with a link to the supplier's website. I get good results generally with black ink, variable with colour (sometimes either the blue or red ink seems to 'cut out'). Occasionally pulls in the paper at a wonky angle, say 1 ...

good quality cheap printer

Advantages: Cheap, good quality, easy to install, shows ink levels, small, compact, USB
Disadvantages: ink is expensive

...disadvantage is the price of Lexmark ink, you could buy another printer for less! There is ways around this. Tesco's also sell there own brand ink which is half the price and of course there are refills. I personally buy ink on EBay very cheapley. If you are looking for a good quality printer, mainly for home use - I strongly recommend this one. ...
