Buying Guide »

Need a new printer? Facing the immense product range available in shops both on- and offline, you’ll be spoilt for choice. From simple inkjet printers for less than £30 to multifunctional colour laser printers for more than £1,000, there’s a printer ideally suited for whatever your heart desires.

But remember to keep an eye on consequential costs when making your choice, as they can get quite high – especially with cheaper devices.

So, which printer is best for you?

What do you need your printer for?
Generally, you should follow some basic rules:
  • If the printer’s primary use will be for professional purposes or if you’re searching for a suitable device for your office, a laser printer will be the best choice.
  • If your printer will primarily be used at home or in a small office and if you’re planning to use it to print photos, you should look into inkjet printers, which are traditionally said to be better for photo printing.
  • If your digital camera has become your constant companion, the purchase of a specials photo printer might be a wise move.
  • If you use your printer not only for printing but also for scanning documents, a multifunctional device will certainly pay off.

Every device carries certain pros and cons which you need to consider in line with your individual requirements. There are some criteria, however, which you should take into account no matter what specific needs you have – these criteria include storage capacity, plug-ins and additional costs.

My First Xerox.

Advantages: Separate colour reservoirs, good instructions
Disadvantages: No cables

The Xerox m760 came with my new pc and I expected it to be tacky, cheap, and cheerful but basically not very good. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it is an excellent piece of printing machinery. Easy to setup and install, easy to use. As usual there were no cables, these have to be bought separately, but the machine can be connected to either a printer port on your pc or by USB. Drivers were already available through Windows XP so I didn't ...
...unlike many older printers which have only one cartridge for all three colours. This prevents wastage of ink when only one colour is depleted but the whole cartridge has to be replaced on older machines. This makes the Xerox 760 cheaper to run than many older printers. Well done Xerox. ...

Xerox 8265 eco-solvent large format printer

Advantages: Good service & support, great print quality
Disadvantages: Too many mechanical problems - not reliable

...I would never recommend a xerox large format printer after having been acquainted with 2 of them. Professionals are much better off with HP that are superior and quite more reliable. Here are the flaws I have to point out: - Mechanics that renders the daily use annoying: rear load of media requires a lot more working area - type of rear load not precise since printing a 10 foot ot more banner can get skewed at the end if media is not loaded completely ...
...performing certain tasks. - Xerox sells a 220cc & 440cc ink cartridge. While the 220cc fits nicely benind an enclosed space, the 44cc ink cartrige sticks out by 10" outside the casing, and is not protected by a closed door, One can accidentaly knock against the cartridges that really protrude from the machine and thus damage the inside connection. Buying 2 times 220 cc cost more that 1 440 cc!! - Troublesome front roll windup as printed media comes ...

Microsoft, Xerox please be friends.

Advantages: Separate colour cartridges, Fast, Express Option.
Disadvantages: Incompatible Windows XP Driver.

I purchased the Xerox M750 about in April 2002 and at the time had a personal computer running windows ME. The reason for the buy was the price (at the time £45) and the fact that it had a 1200x1200 best photo resolution. Under Windows ME I was incredibly happy with the printer the driver that comes with the printer has a preferences and status monitor that not only gives you complete control of everything from colour and contrast to page layout ...
...option. I then contacted Xerox who told me that they had had many complaints about this driver, but, that there was no love lost between Xerox and Microsoft and that there would not be an update to the software. This has left me no choice but to get another printer!!!!!? People have asked me to add a little more information about the printer so here are a few statistics and numbers :-) The printer runs from both USB and parallel measures 18.5" ...

Well, it works.......

Advantages: Individual ink tanks, does the job (eventually)
Disadvantages: makes plenty of cock-ups, expensive if the printhead goes caput

Sometime around either October or November 2000 I obtained one of these in Curry's in Scarborough for about £50 and been using it on & off ever since. Installing it was a fairly simple matter of following the instructions and plugging one cable into the electrical socket, and the other into the back of my Iomega Zip drive. It can be slightly noisey, and on numberous occasions caused me to jump a bit when it suddenly decides to do a print cycle. ...
...too badly, but shortly after I've ever since had to resort to sticking the sheets in one at a time to stop it taking the entire bloody lot with it, and printing onto several sheets at the same time. I also discovered if one of the Ink tanks (which each hold about 25ml of ink) runs out, then it refuses to print even if you don't need to use that particular colour.... like if the Cyan (blue) ink tank runs out, but it wouldn't matter because the document ...

Valiant Prints of Xerox

Advantages: Compact, Economical, Simple to set up and use
Disadvantages: Around £30 to replace all the ink.

My Xerox Docuprint XJ6C was acquired a few months ago. Previously it had been plugged into my girlfriends PC but had been rarely used so we decided it’d be better used connected up to my machine. I am unsure if this model of Docuprint is still available to buy, I suspect not as this printer is 2 years old now, and was bundled free with a PC offer. ...certainly look at a new Xerox in the future, as this model is a breeze to use! The only downside is that it can be a little noisy, but this is of little concern since the CD players normally spinning away here... ... PS - I found the title for this a tough one to muster, may have to change it... ...
