Buying Guide »

Need a new printer? Facing the immense product range available in shops both on- and offline, you’ll be spoilt for choice. From simple inkjet printers for less than £30 to multifunctional colour laser printers for more than £1,000, there’s a printer ideally suited for whatever your heart desires.

But remember to keep an eye on consequential costs when making your choice, as they can get quite high – especially with cheaper devices.

So, which printer is best for you?

What do you need your printer for?
Generally, you should follow some basic rules:
  • If the printer’s primary use will be for professional purposes or if you’re searching for a suitable device for your office, a laser printer will be the best choice.
  • If your printer will primarily be used at home or in a small office and if you’re planning to use it to print photos, you should look into inkjet printers, which are traditionally said to be better for photo printing.
  • If your digital camera has become your constant companion, the purchase of a specials photo printer might be a wise move.
  • If you use your printer not only for printing but also for scanning documents, a multifunctional device will certainly pay off.

Every device carries certain pros and cons which you need to consider in line with your individual requirements. There are some criteria, however, which you should take into account no matter what specific needs you have – these criteria include storage capacity, plug-ins and additional costs.

Samsung CLP 300 - not worth buying

Advantages: Small laser printer
Disadvantages: Unreliable

...months ago I saw the Samsung CLP-300 on a website and it looked brilliant. Well, everything looks brilliant if someone wants to sell it. Anyhow, for me it looked good enough. But I did not want to pay £150 for a new printer. So, I had a look in ebay. And there it was my Samsung CLP-300 for £100. Well, I bid on and got it for £112 in the end. The CLP-300 claims to be the world's smallest and lightest colour laser printer. Well, at least at that time. ...
...is pretty small for a laser printer. It’s weight is 13.6 kg, which I found pretty heavy. But that’s simply because I am so used to inkjet printer. Looking at the box, it says the CLP-300 uses 350W when printing and 17W at standby. I cannot measure it, so I am not sure, if that’s true. But it does seem to be a lot. It’s pretty loud when printing. But it was ok for me. It does get pretty hot , though after just 3 pages printing. The speed is quite ...

Be IN - have ML-1630!

Advantages: Excellent design, fast and cheap expenses
Disadvantages: Expensive to buy, prints only common pages

...is due to its design. Samsung ML-1630 has got an excellent design so it is a nice device to have on your table. It is black and on the top side has got glare surface - that is good for design but you have to clean it often. This printer is also very small - its height is only 12 cm. There are fascinating buttons with blue backlight and most interesant is a bar of diodes 13x5 which displays various informations and makes various effects as well. ...
...various sounds like an older mobile phone. The only bad thing is that i was not able to find where to switch this feature off, but they arent loud. Buttons are all touch activable so you only touch button and dont press to switch it. I found a bad thing anout this device - it is not possible to print something not standard - envelopes, stickers and so on! Inserting toner is very easy and you will have no difficulties with it - you just put toner ...

Samsung ML-1610

Advantages: Very Cheap for a laser printer. Toner Save Function.
Disadvantages: Slow response time. No Printer USB Cable.

I purchased the the Samsung ML-1610 between 2 and 3 years ago and paid £99.00 which I thought was excellent value for a laser printer. It was the cheapest laser printer onthe market at thetime and I'll admit I wasn't expecting it to be a great printer. I was intending to replace it once I had the money to get a better quality one. Looks-wise the Samsung ML-1610 laser printer is a great looking printer. It is quite compact and been well designed ...
...still being used with most of Samsung's current printers. The printer prints with reasonable quality. It takes quite some time to start up before it prints (this is when it is heating up to almost melt the toner to the page which is why pages come out of a laser printer warm), but when it starts printing, it can print off several full pages of text very quickly. The printer can now be picked up for just £50, best place I've found to buy: e-bay. At ...

Samsung ML-1520 Monochrome Laser Printer

Advantages: Fast printing and easy set-up.
Disadvantages: Quality suffers when large quantity is printed at once.

I bought this printer mainly because of it's low cost but also because I liked very much it's predecessor, the ML-1510, which my girlfriend owns. It's cheap and very easy to set up. If anyone owns a ML-1510 and thinking of upgrading to the ML-1520, I don't think there's much point. They are pretty much identical in terms of its functionality, but the ML-1520 is more square-ish and is the standard grey colour (more 'manly' if you like). Personally ...
...is slightly smaller and lighter. The pros. The quality of print (especially if printing text only) is superb, even on the starter toner that's supplied with the printer. I have not printed any photos so I can't really comment on that but I have tried printing road maps from the internet. Again the quality is great and I can clearly nake out the individual roads and road names. What I like about this printer is the different ways you can feed in ...

a little black box of tricks

Advantages: Good price, quiet and a laser color printer that actually looks good
Disadvantages: lacks a double sided print function (but that is me nitpicking)

...more specifically a piano black Samsung monitor. I would also assume that this printer can be suitable for small offices due to its compact size. Furthermore, refills may seem expensive at first and many retailers do not stock them. However, compared to other refills it is not very expensive and with the internet you can purchase the refills easily and cheaper rather than finding an actual store. Despite the positives the printer does lack certain ...
...You would not necessarily put Samsung at the top in terms of print quality compared to other brands like HP, Epson and Canon, but those brands costs more. After five months of usage my only main concern is that it does have a ink indicator (but that may be due to the fact that i use a Mac) and it does emit some smells (but maybe laser printers do emit some smells). Although it does satisfy my needs, if you want to print okay color pictures and excellent ...
