For fans of Grey’s Anatomy this is a must for you.
Private Practice is an American drama show shown in England on Living TV on Thursday nights. It’s a spin off from the very popular medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. It is now in its second season.
The show revolves around Dr Addison Forbes Montgomery. If you watch Grey’s Anatomy you will know that she is the ex-wife of Derek Shepherd who worked at Seattle Grace hospital with him and Meredith for a time. She is one of the top neonatal surgeons in the country and when she is offered a job by her old friend Naomi she moves out to California to begin working at a health clinic in Santa Monica. The show thus follows her move to the clinic and the new environment she finds herself in.
When this show first started I have to admit that I didn’t really love it. I love the energy of Grey’s Anatomy and for me the first series didn’t really live up to what I thought it should be. However, you have to remember that even though this is a spin-off it’s a very different show format to Grey’s and once I got into the second series I now really like this show so I do advise you to stick with it and I find the dynamics of the show really quite interesting.
The clinic focuses more I think on personal relationships and relationship with patients more than Grey’s. Grey’s is all about high drama, fast paced operations and dangerous situations where the medical staff here actually take time to get to know their patients and see them through their whole treatment. We meet the patients and learn about their history and can experience the case just like the doctors are doing.
I really like the different roles the doctors have in this clinic. The clinic is like a one stop medicine shop where you can get all your medical needs seen too. For example there is a paediatrician, a therapist, a herbalist, a fertility doctor and a regular medicine doctor. They all have different patients but their philosophy is to talk about the patients together and come up with a solution to some of the cases. Usually a case takes up one episode and by the next episode we are onto another client.
We also get to learn a lot about the doctors and their personal lives in this show which I like. They all seem to be intertwined and have a lot of history together. For example Addison is best friends with Naomi who runs the clinic. Naomi set up the clinic with her now ex-husband Sam and they are still able to work together and remain friends. Naomi is now sleeping with Addison’s brother and a couple of the other characters have had relationships too. It makes for sometimes awkward conversations at work but interesting situation.
The medical cases they handle obviously focus a lot on pregnant women or women trying to get pregnant as this is the occupation of two of the prime characters. There are also quite a lot of unusual, interesting cases that I was never aware of before so this aspect keeps you interested in the show too. They also deal with quite a few controversial cases and it’s interesting to see which outcome all of the characters come to.
All in all, a good medical drama that I recommend.
