as to where they want him to run by clicking in the open space. However, it's what happens with your teammates that will prove to be the defining moment of this latest PES. Users will be able to click on other members of their side and tell them where to run, to perform one-two passes or make them create space by dragging away defenders. It will be possible to manipulate as many players as you can quickly get control of to make set pieces become a vital part of the attacking play. Make forwards run across goal, defenders will spin and attack the back post while the towering striker makes a dart for the near post - all of which is controlled by you.The game will automatically detect the type of pass you want to make depending on the distance the player you want to pass to is standing. If you point for a pass to a player on the other side of the pitch, the game will loop a high ball over. Likewise, if you chip a ball into space, you can then grab the nearest player and move him towards it.New gameplay modes have been added, including the Champions Road option. Players get the opportunity to train sub standard team and then play off against other teams online. Defeating these CPU teams enables you to take some of their players and strengthen your team on the road to glory.

Created specifically to make full use of the Wii?s unique control system, PES 2008 brings ... more
all the realism of Pro Evolution Soccer to the Nintendo machine, but with a more ?team-orientated? control system. The Wii game mirrors the real sport?s use of open space and the exploitation of defensive lapses and accurate passes essential in creating scoring opportunities. The Wii version of PES 2008 expands on these elements, with the use of the Nunchuck and Wii Remote controllers giving the player control over both the player on the ball, and those around him. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 Features: Using a point and drag system, the player uses the Wii Remote to guide the player with the ball, and perform all the skill moves and close control with subtle movements of their hand. Instantly, the Wii Remote is used to point at nearby players to select them to receive a pass or to latch on to a through-ball. The Remote can also be used to steer the run of the receiving player, giving extra control as they thread throughmasses of defenders or run into open space. The new system gives the player full control over their team, and allows the man marking of specific threats, while shakes of the Wii Nunchuk can be used to perform sliding tackles, and send the goal keeper out to clear a loose ball. The strategic elements are also easily accessed, with the directional controls of the Wii Remote used to activate tactical plays and spring counter attacks or send players tracking back. PES 2008 for Wii features six game modes, spanning Match, League and Cup elements, and Training and Trade section. The new version also features an exclusive ?Champions Road? competition, wherein players take their chosen team to compete in league competitions all over the world. The idea of the Champions Road tournament is to come top in every league, and build a team by receiving players from recently defeated sides. Experience points are added to all used players after a match, and

PES2008 is the latest in the long line of Pro Evolution Soccer games to be produced by Konami. The Konami team had a difficult job to match this height of expectation when creating the next-gen versions of Pro Evolution Soccer, attempting to live up to the great gameplay and intelligent AI that fans of the series have come to expect. And I can safely say that the instinctive controls and superb gameplay is there for all to see.
Gameplay
Konami has moved the series forward since the last instalment of PES6. The controls, that most agree were somewhat loose in the previous game, are now much more responsive, allowing the user much better close control. The AI has also been improved somewhat too. The players work together as a team and will make more intelligent runs. The opposition also shows these signs of intelligence and will provide a much stiffer task in beating them, especially on the higher difficulty settings.
This can be mainly attributed to PES2008's new TeamVision feature. Which allows the opposition to learn and adapt to the way the player is approaching the game. Though this claims the defenders will more aggressively defend areas you continually attack, and similarly attackers will attack more aggressively in the areas you are defensively weak, it does not seem to be as apparent as I was first expecting. On the 'Master League' setting I bought a quick winger, and have been able to constantly score goals by running down the wing and crossing without many teams attempting to double up or the such. And so if you are not one for changing your tactics every game, do not fear. The AI is good, but you will not find it impossible.
The authenticity of the game is in full view for the gamers, also. Players such as Adriano and Rooney will be able to ride the challenges more easily than others, and show off their power shots from way outside the box. The same applies for players such as Deco and Fabregas, who are technically sound, with their passing accuracy superb, but they may fall short against the bigger, stronger players.
Set-pieces more or less the same as previous PES games, with free-kicks being able to be taken quickly or using the set up to select your best set piece taker. However, when attempting to save a penalty, if you're playing alone, the camera is positioned behind and to the side of the keeper, looking out at the penalty taker. It does feel slightly different at first but it doesn't affect the way you go around attempting the save - simply move the d-pad or analogue to dive in that direction.
Graphics
the graphics do look good, not in the same league as FIFA yet but certainly a step in the right direction. How much they look like their real world counterparts are a bit hit-and-miss, with the licensed players looking more or less pot on, but with other players such as Scholes looking a little indistinguishable. However, the rest of the game, and the majority of the players, looks good and Konami are definitely improving in that department.
Sound
The commentary is decent enough, with only the odd time delay or annoying phrase repeated throughout the game (but is that so much different to he commentary we get on live games on the TV?). The in match sounds are also up to the mark, such as the chants and crowd noise, as well as decent sound effects for the ball and player interaction. However, the menu music can get rather annoying, unless you are in to your Euro trash and Samba groove.
Modes
Exhibition - allows you to play a one off game with whichever teams you like League - allows you to play though a variety of league competitions, including all the major European leagues Cup - allows you to choose to enter a variety of cups, including all the major cup competitions Master league - allows you to create a team to play through the leagues, purchasing the players you would like along the way - you may start with the default team or a team of your choice Gallery - allows you to analyse your victories in competitions and your stats both on and offline Edit - allows you to access teams and edit their players/team name/team strip etc Xbox Live - allows you to play against people around the world, with Live finding opponents similar to your rank
Xbox Live
PES2008 offers full online capability with the player able to choose the game setting they would prefer to play and then searching for opponents of similar rank. This adds another aspect to the game of playing against other gamers rather than always competing against the AI. However, this is one of the biggest let downs for PES2008. The lag is awful and has not really been addressed since its release. With the only the odd case of lag on bigger multi-players such as Halo3, then this is a large disappointment for most Pro Evo fans. Most of the games I have played online have been ruined, with the ball appearing behind your defence a split second after you have just battled for it in the midfield. If you are purchasing the game purely for the Live capability I suggest you steer clear.
Grievances
Not really enough for there to be a whole category but I thought I better list them anyway, and most will be known to Pro Evo fans with the earlier games:
Xbox Live - such a disappointment and could have made the game almost perfect Lack of licenses for Premiership teams - one that really doesn't bother me that much but may get some annoyed at constantly have to play as Man Red or the such (yet this can easily be sorted out in the 'Edit' menu where team names can be changed very quickly) The graphics - still not competing on the same par as the likes of FIFA (though still much better gameplay)
Verdict
Overall this is another feather in the cap of Konami. The gameplay is back to its best, and the small additions of tactics add to the game without making it impossible to play without them. The AI are intelligent and fun to play against, and the controls are smooth and easy to handle. . It's realistic and hugely enjoyable, with only the Xbox Live problems being its only downfall. That said, being a fan of the Pro Evo franchise from the start, I would still say PES2008 is still the best football game that's out there.
Advantages: Better Graphics Disadvantages: Only slight improvements on previous version
...it was better known as Pro Evolution Soccer. It was an instant success and has through each successive year become a game that has it's fan eagerly awaiting it's annual publication. It's fiercest competitor in this sports market is FIFA Soccer and it is simply a matter of preference as to which game one thinks is superior, since each have their own merits and demerits. For me however the rivalry between the two companies and fan sets is of little ... ...though FIFA is, PES, or Pro Evo as Pro Evolution Soccer is better known surpasses it quite substantially in my book.
The vast difference in the graphics since that first publication in 2001is blatantly obvious, and even more so should you be fortunate enough to play the game on an HD ready TV. The players are instantly recognisable the graphics are sharp and vivid, and the animation is simply stunning. It is small details that make a big game like ...

Advantages: great fast paced football game - suitable for anyone who likes football Disadvantages: lacks as many licences and clubs as fifa
...a strong follower of the pro evo series and bought this game as soon as it was released despite many people trying to persuade me to go to the 'other side' and buy Fifa. Was this the year that fifa took the lead?
I have to say that i am confident i made the right decision and have seen several improvements from last year's game and have enjoyed this game loads, it was certainly worth buying.
This game has had many improvements from its predeccesor ... ...There are as usual, on pro evo, some great songs from a variety of different bands. I would also like to mention that the commentary in this version is a great improvement from last year and they actually say more relevant things.
There are still a variety of modes to choose from including the well loved master league mode where you can start as a team of your choice and play through games as well as being the manager and making team changes and ...

Advantages: Everything!!! Disadvantages: Lack of licensing
...and its actually YOU!
Pro Evo has always been known for its unique master league and to be honest the format here hasnt changed at all- which is a little bit annoying but it has developed enough to keep it very enjoyable and very addictive!
The most fun you can have of Pro Evo though is if you have xbox live--- you can play anyone from across Europe and this makes the game very very addictive; you will find yourself playering 10 or 20 games a day! ... ...as much money as the Pro Evo series hasnt got all the licenses, this is irratating as it takes the fun out of player certain teams :( For example... Manchester Utd on the game are known as Man Red and dont have there official kit, there players are still there but this is the biggest difference between the Pro Evo and Fifa rivalry!
Also the xbox live games are extremely laggy if you dont have a high connection speed- I play on a 2mg broadband line ...

Advantages: Strong graphics, good gameplay, wide spectrum of AI Disadvantages: Poor online capabilities, still lacking a fully licencsed lineup
The PES series of football games are often said to be the best of the bunch, with game play better than FIFA games, even if the graphics aren't quite up to scratch and at the cost of all the teams not being licensed. Well PES 2008 is a good game, no doubt about that, and being the first next gen PES, it had high expectations to live up to.
Well the graphics in the game are certainly good enough for next gen, with players moving with greater fluidity ... ...theres a fair few teams too, however compare it with the latest FIFA outing, and it seems distinctly average.
The Premiership remains unlicensed, apart from player names, and not even all the international teams have the correct player names, however we have come to expect that from PES games so lets put that aside and focus on the game play.
The game play is generally very good, the AI is less robotic and will make the odd mistake, and it also ...

Advantages: Fast-paced, multiplayer fun, hours of enjoyment Disadvantages: Strangely disappointing for the hardcore fans
...for a decade. FIFA or Pro Evo? Well this year, it's a close contest.
In my opinion, the PES series has been the stronger contender of the two games in recent years, leading to a borderline addiction.
But this year, surprisingly, I have put down the pad and decided to write this review instead. For some reason, the game has slightly lost its charm.
The graphics are very good with some very realistic player likenesses and an edit mode to correct ... ...time.
All in all, Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 is a good quality game with months of playability if you like that sort of game. Not much of a leap from its predecessor but more of an update. It has lost plenty of ground on its rivals this year and also loses some of its addictiveness over time, but is still definitely worth buying. ...

Key to PES 2008 is a proprietary adaptive AI system entitled Teamvision. Unique to the Konami game, Teamvision is a sophisticated AI programming that learns and adapts according to an individual\'s style of play. As such, it will learn new ways to build attacks and to counter specific movements and previous attacking or defensive errors, ensuring games are more in line with the tactical but flowing nature of the real thing.

As with previous releases since its inception in 1996, the ball is again treated as a separate entity, with the timing of shots entirely down to the player, while the new AI ensures that defenders work to close down space and block efforts on goal. Similarly, distribution of passes works along the same lines, with players using the space available to them to switch the ball. Close control has also been enhanced with more control when dribbling the ball, and a number of subtle moves added to bypass defenders and move the ball into space.

Set-pieces have been improved, with full control given over the number of players and the position of the defensive wall. A wider range of set piece options are also available to make use of specific talents within the team.
Player detail has been taken to incredible levels with full facial animation and the high-definition detail afforded by the hardware used to show full movement and subtle details to the various kits during the course of a match. All \'Next Gen\' versions will also benefit from an extensive Edit mode, allowing gamers to customise their PES experience.
