experience with its latest instalment, Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (PES 2009). The main upgrades from year to year in sports simulators are the expected features such as extended and updated rosters, teams, players and stadiums, with extra game modes perhaps and improved AI; this is where PES 2009 conforms to the norm. The AI is more intelligent, there's a heightened sense of realism with unique camera angles and improved graphics as well as the functionality of PES 2009 over Xbox Live and in the brand new Become a Legend mode where players start off as an amateur footballer who becomes scouted out to play for a top club and then must prove that he can wing it with the pros.

I recently was given a Playstation 3 as an engagement present from my Bride to be, despite her insistence I wasn't getting one. So one of the first games I picked up for the PS3 was Pro Evolution Soccer 2009. I'd recently got the previous version on the Wii and while it had redeeming features, the game difficultly perhaps wasn't what it could have been. I always have to have a football game regardless of which console I own, so it was time to see whether Konami had improved on the poorer points of the last game.
There are a couple of new features and game modes that Konami have added to try and improve on the poor reviews they received last time out. They have kept 3 of the previous game modes, revised one and added one completely new one to the 2008 edition. You can still run through Cup competitions in the old way, exhibition matches for those times where you just want to play one game and the standard league formations, all of which are pretty self explanatory.
The new game modes are the new Champions League and Legends mode. The Champions League, like the normal cup and league modes is pretty self explanatory. You take your team up against the best in Europe with the view of lifting the European cup at the end of the season. The second new mode is perhaps the better and more innovative of the two. The new legend's mode takes over from last season's Champions Road. You create your own character and start off as a 17 year old youngster and this mode takes you through your career, playing for various clubs and trying to win as many trophies as possible.
This is a very good selling point for this game and perhaps the best career mode of any football game yet. Now I realise that's quite a big statement but it works well and I think it's one of the things that Konami have got right about this title. They've also revamped the game play this time round and even in the easiest mode the game is nowhere near as easy as its last outing. It's an important improvement that really needed to be made and while it's still perhaps not quite as competitive in the hardest mode as it could be it's a vast improvement on the last time out.
Of course as the last PES I had was on the Wii the control system on the PS3 is understandably different. It's not a point and click process and relies more on the standard joy pad to control your players. For this reason the compulsory training method from the Wii version isn't required. They have managed to improve the tackling on this year's release as well, which was a much needed improvement. You still seem to pick up the same amount of pointless yellow cards but unlike last time your defence don't seem scared of the opposition.
It's not all plain sailing though for the new PES title. It still has the lack of actual franchises so while the players are all in the game, a lot of the clubs are still missing and this will start to lose Konami some of its fan base as the Fifa games start to improve. The graphics too are still not as good as you would expect, especially when you consider the capabilities of the PS3, then PES2009 isn't as good as it should or could be. The players still look like themselves when your close in but the detail and graphics during the actual game play aren't what you would expect and don't really seem to have improved from the last title.
My other complaint comes with the controls and in particular the passing and shooting on this year's version of the release. While the tackling seems to have improved I felt that the shooting wasn't quite as reliable as it previously had been. But in comparison to the passing function on this year's release the shooting is just a minor annoyance. The short passing is still as solid as ever but like previous PES games I'm still annoyed by how unreliable the through ball is. In comparison to the competition it seems strange that Konami haven't improved this feature, but it's something that always lets the series down.
Overall it seems though that Konami are starting to head in the right direction with the quality and game play features within the Pro Evo series. It is a huge improvement on the previous outing and while there are still some bug bears that will put people off the series it still has enough redeeming features to keep the loyal fan base coming back. Yes the team names can be changed to the real ones once you've got the game, if you can be bothered, but i really think Konami should look at picking up more licences to at least keep competing with the Fifa series. It's a good game and one I'd certainly recommend.

Pro evolution soccer (PES) 2009 is a football computer game spread across several different platforms- I have the xbox 360 version so my review will be based on that although I don't believe there to be much difference between this and the PS3 version.
The Pros--- The game is quite realistic, players think like real players (although they don't look like them), the controls are smooth, and you will never score the same goal twice! It now feature ... ...league and a lot of the teams playing in it don't have licensing so you find your self being bored!
The replay system has also been revamped making this a lot smoother and free.
If you have a webcam for your 360 there is a continuing feature from PES 2006 which lets you take a picture of your face and stick it on a player... this is awesome and great fun for creating a team of all your mates- its great watching your name score a goal and then you ...

Advantages: Some good gameplay, be a legend mode Disadvantages: Looks quite shabby now, same old engine, not many licensed teams
...the moment because while the Pro Evolution soccer series has always sold very well, it seems to have recently lost a lot of ground to it's main competitor Fifa. Therefore with this fresh new stronger challenge to it's title as the best football game, Konami have release Pro Evolution 2009 but the question is does it set new heights? Since I had not even bothered with the previous effort from Konami, it was good to see that some new variation has ... ...now a Become A Legend Mode which will allow you to create your own football player from scratch. You can customise his looks and set the initial attributes through a limited amount of attribute points you are provided with and after which you can improve him still further as you gain more experience. Beyond this, we have much the same setup as before with a Master League, cup modes and it's variants and exhibition. Gameplay wise, the engine seems ...

Advantages: Great to play online, more technical Disadvantages: Gameplay slower, too mechanical in player movement.
Im a massive Pro Evo fan and couldn't wait to get the ltest version off the shelves. Pro Evo 2008 was great. I mastered the game completely to the point where 5 stars was way too easy! In my opinion this game only needed tweaking in certain areas to improve it. However, the gameplay is now slower, more difficult to beat a man, players turn slower and movement looks too mechanical. The controls are way more technical with various control combinations ... ...in that split second will you have the chance to execute this move? Only with lots and lots of practise!
In short, Pro Evo 10 needs to have a 6 star difficulty level, faster gameplay, easier controls and more realistic player movements. Get this right and its a winner! ...

Review of Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (PS3)
Advantages: Good graphics and audio, excellent presentation, good control system, Champions League Disadvantages: Poor online functionality, right control stick is no longer a control stick
PES2009 or FIFA 09?
First thing I have to say is that I own both Fifa 09 and PES2009 but comment on each game for its qualities with Fifa 09 this year managing to lead the way in terms of quality.
PES2009 is at first glance a great step up in presentation and the new Champions League mode is a real bonus for players who have stuck with this as you finally feel they are listening to our disgruntled shoutings about the poor licensing on offer each ... ...parts you get to the game engine and upon first play I sat and listened to a constant thudding getting more and more annoying as when you run in this game it is now true to real life in that players tire as they move over a distance and so kick the ball further ahead...I kept at this and after a few times appreciated this as a possitive step forward.
Now for the bad point...the right control stick is now simply a pass stick and no longer a control ...

The Wii box includes everything you need to hook the system up to a standard television: the Wii console, a wireless controller with nunchuk adaptor, the sensor bar, a cradle (for mounting the console vertically), the Wii's modestly sized power adaptor, and a set of composite AV cables. Unfortunately, composite cables don't support the Wii's top progressive-scan resolution of 576p, so HD Ready TV owners will want to also purchase a set of Wii component cables (sold separately).
The Wii games that you can purchase are really exciting, including mario go karts, Wii sports that actually comes with the Wii and has on it boxing, tennis, bowling, baseball and golf, Wii Play and also many of the main games that you can also get with the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 like the new James Bond game and ProEvolutionSoccer2009. Manufacturer's product description
It's back, and this years Pro Evolution Soccer has been reworked from the ground up! New player models, AI elements and physics routines all combine to create the most advanced and realistic football game ever, but at the heart of PES 2009 are two new modes designed to make players rethink the way they approach the game. PES Unites' is the key phrase Konami is using to sum up the ethos of the new game. PES 2009 also improves on its many existing game modes and adds a number of new ways to play the game. Central to this is the new 'Become a Legend' solo mode, which casts the user as a midfielder or striker within a match. Using a default vertical camera view, the player starts as a rookie pro at the start of their career, and charts the many highs and lows of becoming a professional player. An extension of the popular 'Fix' mode, the 'Become a Legend' mode sees the player operate in their favoured attacking position, and work as part of the overall team as opposed to controlling every member as in a normal game.
