PES2009 or FIFA 09? First thing I have to say is that I own both Fifa 09 and PES2009 but comment on each game for its qualities with Fifa 09 this year managing to lead the way in terms of quality. PES2009 is at first glance a great step up in presentation and the new Champions League mode is a real bonus for players who have stuck with this as you finally feel they are listening to our disgruntled shoutings about the poor licensing on offer each year. Once you get past all of these glossy new parts you get to the game engine and upon first play I sat and listened to a constant thudding getting more and more annoying as when you run in this game it is now true to real life in that players tire as they move over a distance and so kick the ball further ahead...I kept at this and after a few times appreciated this as a possitive step forward. Now for the bad point...the right control stick is now simply a pass stick and no longer a control helper which I find a real let down as I love being able to know ahead of an opponent where my controlled touch should be to make the most of a good pass. So...is this worth a punt? Well in my opinion play the game the first time with the volume low so you don't hear the thudding and then try the game again with the volume on this way you already appreciate the great gameplay and won't be put off with the thudding, if you want a game you can play online then I would go for FIFA 09 as this game can frustrate due to slow loading, lack of opponents, lag, etc. The graphics are great. the audio excellent and overall the presentation is great but little mistakes have let this game down despite improvements in gameplay and controls managing to pull this game up a great deal in its ongoing race to be market leader against the mighty Fifa. All in all I can't rate this higher than a 3 star as I knocked a star off for the lack of control capability in the right control stick and another star off for the online facility as this I found to be slow and lacks the free flowing feel of Fifa09's online facility.
