Once upon a time not so long ago 2 dots or lines on a screen and a little ball going across the screen. Hit the dot with the line and try to stop your opponent from doing the same. Sounds simple doesn't it. But that was gaming not so long ago.
I thought that once I turned fifty gaming would be of no more interest to me. How wrong I was. After suffering from depression a few years back my son got me into playing football on his playstation to try and help me. Since then we've played many games of football on many different formats. FIFA 2000 etc. We are currently playing as MARDON ATHLETICO with the Pro Evolution Soccer 4 game, and it is by far and away the best yet.
As you can see you can create your own team, my son is called Marc I am called Don hence Mardon Athletico. We have created some players of our own, namely me, him my stepfather and in the player create mode you can get the feature pretty much right, well at least recognisable. I'm a bit younger looking than fifty quite handsome really.
Once you have created your team you can create your own league, or start off in a low league and try to build up to the higher leagues. If you create your own league you can play as many seasons as you like, and obviously you can be relegated, but there is no promotion.
There is also a cup competition during the season, and a WEFA competition which is based on the champions league format. You cannot however play in the WEFA until you have achieved a position of first second or third in the league you are playing in.
There are five skill levels to the game, we are pretty good on the second level but just not good enough on level three to get a top three position.
During the season you accumulate points for wins in all competitions, you also gets points for draws but none for losses. At certain points during the season and at the end of the seasons there are negotiation rounds where your can use your points to purchase/sell players.
The teams available to play with are Italian, Dutch, and Spanish which are licensed and English, French, Scottish and German which are not licensed. All unlicensed leagues have alternate names for players and teams and in is very time consuming to change all these should you choose these leagues to play in. If you choose any teams in these leagues whilst creating your own league these changes will have to be made if you want all names to be accurate.
Once your all set up it's just a case of practising and playing, this can take some time to get used to, but I found it relatively easy and great fun. There's a bit of a buzz as you improve and start competing.
The graphics and gameplay are just brilliant and you will with a little effort be able to recognise most of the major players in the game. After a few games once you start knocking the goals in you might easily get hooked as I have, we play a couple of games most nights and are enjoying it immensely. It's great therapy after a crappy day.
If you have a playstation this game is a must have for any serious footy fan, as I said before we have played most of the football games available and this is without doubt KING of them all.
There is commentary during the game from Trevor Brooking and Peter Brackly, which can get a bit repetitive but has some funny lines in it, such as Super Jinking Run which really creases me up.
All games can be saved to a memory card before or after a game, and if you are fortunate enough to score a corker of a goal you can save this too just to show you mates how cool you are.
I know you might be thinking who is this sad old guy who's playing PES4 every night. Well I am the great DONZALDO no 18 of MARDON ATHLETICO football club, and father to the great El Marco of the same team.
Get it have a game and have fun we do.

I've been hooked ever since I got hold of it for the Xbox. Lets just say, never mind trying to figure out what the team names are and are meant to be. Just look at some of the players and that will tell you. I mean, Jaaskelainen playing for Middlebrook? I think we all know that he plays for Bolton Wanderers, so there is no need to change the names. North London, North East London, West London Blue, West London White, and South East London are Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, Fulham, and Charlton respectively for those that get confused with London teams....

Good review, well written, but I can't say I am a games person. I did find a Formula one racing game fun once, but never really got hooked - Derek

Advantages: Fantastic gameplay, best football simulation available Disadvantages: compulsively addictive, past the stage where it is a good thing. lack of licenses.
Advantages: Smooth and realistic gameplay, better than previous realeases, x-box live add on. Disadvantages: Commentary is awful, lacks the presentation of FIFA 2005
