Despite playing Fifa Football for most of my gaming life I decided to see what the fuss was all about with the latest in the Pro Evo franchise, No 5. The game has already reached a best-selling status by joining the many other elite Platinum games, which gives you a fantastic game for a fantastic price, saving you a bit of money! It boasts Arsenal's Thierry Henry and Chelsea's John Terry on the cover so you automatically know that these two Premiership giants are fully licensed as well as thousands of other players in Europe and the rest of the world. In the previous PES games this was a bit of a distraction because while the faces of the players reflected their real-life counterparts, the names were altered so it would not infringe on the player's copyright. Thankfully for the majority of the game is filled with correct player names so you actually know who saved that last goal or who scored the decider.
The
Game Itself:
PES 5 is the whole package when it comes to your football needs. Want to lead your favourite Premiership team to glory? You can, but why stop there? No only can you play the odd exhibition match or follow your team's progress through the League option as well as the Champions League, you can also lead your country to glory in the World Cup, African Cup, American Cup or the European Cup! But this doesn't stop there, say you are a new player to the PES franchise and you want to try out some moves before you set off on the pitch, there is a special Training section where you can perfect that curling free kick as well as passing and one-two's. This particular section is not just limited to new players but also existing ones who have already played previous PES games and are looking to strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the game and the controls.
As well as these options you also have the chance to enter the special PES Museum where you can view your replays of goals as well as check how many game credits you have earned so far from winning matches and completing special training levels.
The improved graphics mean that the surroundings as well as the players themselves look more and more realistic. An example of this is that you can now see a player's breath when you are playing in a cold or snowy environment, plus some players will wear gloves and if very bright, don't be surprised to see some goalies sport baseball caps! There can be up to 1-8 players (if you bring along 2 multi-taps) and if you should ever get bored of beating your friends, why not try the Net Play mode where you can play against people around the world who also have a Ethernet Network Adaptor!
The game play is very addictive, very smooth and very easy to learn, of course there are many special moves and skills which you would be better off learning in training if you take your gaming seriously, but if you are a casual gamer like me, then playing a few matches without checking out the training section will help you learn the basics when it comes to passing, dribbling and shooting first-hand. Speaking of special moves, if you score a goal with a player famous for their individual celebration (like Robbie Keane from Tottenham for example) then you will see that player's special move, therefore bringing more authenticity to the player and game as a whole.
Positives: You get to play in many championships ranging from Home Leagues to International Cups. Many more players have been licensed as well as the two famous Premiership Teams; Arsenal and Chelsea which means that not only do the players actually have the likeness and names of their real-life counterparts, but they also sport the official team kits (home and away). Graphics and little details have been improved to add more realism to the game-play, such as enhanced weather conditions and new tricks, skills and player celebrations. Net-Play! The game is now a best-seller which means that it joins the other best-selling games on the PS2 in the Platinum section, therefore saving you money! Arguably the best football game out on the Playstation 2!
Negatives:
Could do with a few more licensed players such as the Germany squad. Referees are really poor, some of the most violent tackles only get you a yellow card and you are lucky if your opposition ever gets a card during matches.
