Full review

Acclimatising to the subtle tweaks and refinements to Pro Evo each year is usually a simple process. It's like getting used to driving a new car; at first it feels foreign and uncomfortable but within minutes your muscle memory aligns itself to the new norm. This year, Konami has ripped the metaphorical gear stick out of Pro Evo's cockpit and bolted it to the roof. I'll drop the bombshell in the first paragraph and get it out of the way - they've nearly ruined it. Nearly.

Despite much of the classic 'feel' remaining intact, fundamental changes have been made to the mechanics of the game. Mindful that I accuse Konami of 'breaking' Pro Evo every year until I finally concede they know better (such as killing off the all-conquering through-ball), I invested a lot of playing time to arrive at the conclusion that these changes were indeed a step too far. Worse still, this hasn't been countered by introducing much needed and long overdue improvements in other key areas.

Balance and reward are the cornerstones upon which the series is built. On any given day, seasoned pros could quite feasibly be held or beaten by a novice using little more than instincts and a bit of luck. That said, played over a series of five or ten games, the experienced player would invariably win out. The game responded to possession retention and patience by allowing just enough room to carve out opportunities - a triangulation of skill, endeavour and reward that mirrored the principles of the real life game.

So what's changed? Most importantly the equilibrium between attack and defence has been disrupted in favour of the latter. Time on the ball is the rarest of commodities, and it's worryingly easy to wrestle possession from an attacker before he has settled on the ball. Unless offloaded immediately via a first time pass, the defender can muscle through and steal the ball before the controlling/trapping animation has been completed. This is perhaps the most alienating feature, as not only is it almost impossible to turn with the ball at your feet, a human opponent can turn this to their advantage over and over. It encourages a rope-a-dope strategy of sorts: draw attackers in, steal ball, launch quick counter.

If you are lucky enough to find yourself facing goal within shooting range, you'll find the system which handles this has also been given a steep hike in difficulty. It's incredibly sensitive and precise, to the point where I checked my players were wearing regular football boots and not ones shaped like the face of a nine iron. You will curse, you will scream, you will hit the guys in the cheap seats when it would have been easier to score. Mercifully this is something that can be adapted to given time, however so exciting are these rare scoring opportunities it's too easy to lose all composure and snatch at them.

Now it's pretty obvious where this review is going, and it feels rather unkind pointing to Pro Evo's presentation and laughing. Like an ugly duckling playing wallflower at a party, it can't help it's shortcomings. Of course, the much maligned absence of full player rosters, accurate team kits, names, crests and stadia still mar the experience; likewise the ever-awful commentary, which seems to enthusiastically remind you that you are just playing a soulless video game after all.

Given that EA has systematically bought every licence in football for its FIFA series you can forgive the lack of official content to a degree. The familiar clutch of compensatory tournaments (e.g. Master League & Konami Cup) fill the breach here and deputise capably. It's still overtly Japanese from top to bottom, with that endearing but skewed grasp of the Western subject matter.

Graphically, the game is solid, but next-gen it certainly ain't. The 360 owner will have been expecting more than has been delivered here, which is essentially the Xbox version with a lick of paint. And what is it with crowds and the abundance of furious flag wavers? Have you ever seen a sea of flares and thousands of flags for Bolton v Middlesborough on a wet December midweek game? OK now I am bitching, I'm sorry.

Bottom line: presentation was never Pro Evo's tour de force, and it isn't any better here.

One thing I was looking forward to was an enhanced online mode. Surely Konami weren't going to let us down on all fronts? I'm afraid to report the pattern remains depressingly consistent. There are known issues with the online matchmaking system, but really this should be bread and butter stuff by now for an experienced developer. It can take upwards of 30 minutes to find a match, which is totally absurd. Worse still, the limited functionality that is provided (only 1 v 1 capability on the 360) is serviced by a confusing menu system which does nothing to welcome you into online play. Lag is also a frequent intruder, rendering many games a battle to see who can avoid fitting the longest before the other one quits.

Now you're probably thinking I hate Pro Evo 6. I don't. It's just I'm horrifically disappointed. I expected something special and got a game that, for the first time in the series, manages to adhere to the law of diminishing returns and be less fun than its predecessor. Maybe Konami wants us to play football according to their vision, maybe they think the purists will get the point straight away and the casual players will one day see the light and congratulate them for making it so damn hard-nosed and technical. Maybe.

Whilst performing seventeen one-touch passes in succession before volleying home past Buffon (or Buffin) may not have been entirely faithful to reality, it required genuine skill and was incredibly gratifying, prompting a million saved goals and replays (I should mention now that if you're a 360 owner, even that simple pleasure has been denied). Changing this winning formula was a questionable tactic but hey - maybe turgid battles of attrition are the future for digital football. It might be more realistic, more challenging, but is it more fun?

As the gameplay falls away suddenly all its quirks begin to grate, like when you realise you have to split with your girlfriend because the little traits you once found cute have mutated into motifs for your mutual loathing. OK, that was a bit dramatic but you don't know how much I loved this game.

Perhaps Konami has taken the series as far as it can go without those perpetually elusive official licenses - which is all it ever lacked but the only thing it can't have - hence the excessive meddling with the gameplay. I would much rather have seen the same engine used for Pro Evo 5 ported into a true next gen skin, with better commentary, presentation and an enhanced online mode that actually worked. That would have made me very happy. As it stands, I'm now looking long and hard at FIFA '07, which has quietly inched its way toward the heights hit by this standard bearing series in the past. I've played it and trust me EA nearly have it cracked.

This could be the end of a beautiful friendship.

...battle of the PS2 giants: Pro Evolution Soccer versus Fifa. I hope this review will really help you decide on which game you should get, or even if you should get both like I have. I have gone for the question and answer format, which really seemed to work well in my 'Fifa World Cup 2006 (PS2)' review. I hope you enjoy reading my 50th review!!!!!!! SO, FIRST IMPRESSIONS… So, I wake up on the Friday morning, and remember that it is finally the day ...
...WHAT'S IT LIKE COMPARED TO PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER 5? The first thing I noticed in my first game is the way that the players trap, run and generally use the ball. I think that altogether it looks so much more realistic that PES 5. The players just seem to do what they would do in real life, where in PES 5, the players didn't seem to do everything as they would do if it were to happen in real life. I also found that it was easier to get past an opponent ... Read review

Celebratory Pro Evolution Soccer 6
Review of Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (PS2) by Magrippinho

Advantages: Flawless Gameplay, Unrivalled Multiplayer
Disadvantages: Unlicensed Teams, Accustomization Difficulty

Pro Evolution Soccer 6 is actually the *tenth* installment of Konami's hit football series. Winning Eleven publishes every summer in Japan, is then localized and optimized, renamed and shipped here to Europe, only to go through the same procedure again in order to find its way to American stores as "World Soccer: Winning Eleven [Number]". Even if incessant touring like this hampers the likes of Real Madrid, it apparently works just fine for PES as ...
...than the impeccably presented FIFA, Pro Evolution will not have to worry about coming in first to the educated football fan's heart for at least one more year. ***The Gameplay*** There is one thing and one thing only that sets Pro Evolution apart and makes it the choice game for virtually all video-game-football competitions: the incredible gameplay. Thankfully, since this is football we are dealing with, that is what it all really comes down to. ... Read review

Football lovers brace yourself...
Review of Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (PS2) by untouchable116

Advantages: Exciting game play, very realistic and thoroughly enjoyable
Disadvantages: Commentry could be improved. You can end up spending too long playing it!

...when I was introduced to Pro Evolution Soccer. The first one I ever played was PES 3 and I have been a big fan of the games since! What really got me interested was just how realistic the game is to play. It's almost like you can use all your football knowledge, techniques and tactics and apply them to the game. Anyone who understands football and how to create chance will do well. When you play PES 6 for the first time, you get an instant sense ...
...that there is something new and exciting about it. After playing the game a few times you pick up on the new features and game play enhancements that weren't there in previous installments. You also discover new skills and tricks. There are more official clubs than ever before, including Manchester United and Arsenal. The main new features are: Slow dribble: This clever function allows a player to run with the ball. The ball will hardly leave the ... Read review

Hit For Six
Review of Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (PS2) by scream4bruce

Advantages: Challenging, a much better game to play with friends
Disadvantages: Sloppy passing and shooting, same old problems, crap set-pieces

Preferable to PES 5, but how does it fare against number four? PASSING There is not enough pace behind the passes, and space is never utilised as it should be thus there's a lack of flow to play. The pitch feels slow. Passing angles are fairly natural. At times, the game still struggles to read where I am wanting to make the pass, but a lack of intelligence means that possession is being lost through passes which nobody in the right mind would ...
...momentum taken out of an attack because the player opted to spread the play well wide with the through-ball rather than send a team-mate "through". When I want to encourage an attack I play a through-ball instead of a standard pass, but when I see it go backwards it is not right. Unfortunately the passing options from the set-pieces are strictly limited, as they are with the newly implemented 'Quick Free Kicks', and are so that the latter has no ... Read review

Disadvantages: WOULD HAVE MADE ENTIRE DIFFERENCE.

...the praises from the previous pro evolution installations by fans, they have been using almost the same formula in other installations. But If I may ask, don't we need some thing entirely different? Yes we pro evolution fans do need some thing different although the game play is still like the previous versions. Another year, another footy game...
Review of Pro Evolution Soccer 4 (Xbox) by  5evrin

Advantages: Best. Football. Game. Ever.
Disadvantages: Lack of official licenses.

.... PES4 is probably one of the best football games ever made, with improved graphics, official licenses and the Master League it will keep you playing forever. However, there are some slight problems with it. Not every team has the latest players, so you?ll have to edit them a bit. Owen is at Real Madrid - but Rooney is still playing for Everton, as an example. If somehow we could melt the realistic gameplay from PES4 with the graphics and official licenses of Fifa 2005 we would have a football game that would be impossible to improve. At least not for this generation of consoles. Who knows what the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 2 have in store for us with Pro Evolution Soccer 6?.... Read review

Review of Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (Nintendo DS) by  Dogbert

Advantages: Fun in short blasts
Disadvantages: Repeitive, poor graphics, game play and awful Wi-Fi

...FIFA games were available for Nintendo Consoles I used to have to get my football fix elsewhere. Over the last few releases Pro Evo has improved its licenses and now boasts players like Rooney, Henry, Terry and Adriano and is slowly adding more leagues and clubs too. And, at last Konami has see fit to release its football game on Nintendo Consoles again. Pro Evolution Soccer 6 was released on the Ninetndo DS on Friday 9th February 2006, months after the release on other consoles (27th October on PS2 and Xbox360) due to many non descript delays! As you can probably imagine I was gladder than a man who had just taken 1st place in a Gladdest Man competition. ####It's a funny old game It may seem a little silly and condescending but Pro Evolution Soccer 6 is a football simulator. Manufacturer's product description

The Pro Evolution Soccer series is renowned for its realism, and Pro Evolution Soccer 6 is abundant with new gameplay additions. Player AI has been massively upgraded, with players running intelligently into space when not in possession of the ball and pointing where they want the pass placed to continue the attack. Similarly, the physical side of play has been refined, with players working to turn a defender as they receive the ball, while defenders must learn to stand off slightly to prevent such moves. Series creator Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka has also worked to refine the shooting system of the new game, and players will be able to attempt more snap shots than in previous versions, while volleys and half-volleys have been redesigned. Other new moves include the ability to retain control of the ball when sliding in to tackle, while all-new feints and backwards dribbling are now available thanks to the improved dribbling controls, while headers have been changed to allow players more movement in the way their strikers jump and head the ball. Pro Evolution Soccer 6 also has a number of new teams licensed for inclusion, with the International roster now featuring the official kits for Argentina, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Sweden. Details on official club teams and more national squads will follow. Features: Other new additions include more balanced referees, and a selection of exciting new gameplay modes. An International Challenge involves leading your home country to victory through a series of entry and tournament rounds, while a Random mode lets the player play quick games within randomly-generated match day settings. The much-loved Master League also returns, allowing players to experience the many highs and lows of steering a team through years of competitive games. Aging players, injuries and pressure from the board all combine to create a truly immersive game where results are everything... With its slick moves and realistic action, Pro Evolution Soccer 6 is certain to glide past rival titles with ease and enjoys an impressive roster of new moves, licensed clubs, and gameplay modes.
