as to where they want him to run by clicking in the open space. However, it's what happens with your teammates that will prove to be the defining moment of this latest PES. Users will be able to click on other members of their side and tell them where to run, to perform one-two passes or make them create space by dragging away defenders. It will be possible to manipulate as many players as you can quickly get control of to make set pieces become a vital part of the attacking play. Make forwards run across goal, defenders will spin and attack the back post while the towering striker makes a dart for the near post - all of which is controlled by you.The game will automatically detect the type of pass you want to make depending on the distance the player you want to pass to is standing. If you point for a pass to a player on the other side of the pitch, the game will loop a high ball over. Likewise, if you chip a ball into space, you can then grab the nearest player and move him towards it.New gameplay modes have been added, including the Champions Road option. Players get the opportunity to train sub standard team and then play off against other teams online. Defeating these CPU teams enables you to take some of their players and strengthen your team on the road to glory.

game builds on the implementation of the new thechnology Teamvision with additional key advances. As with previous releases since its inception in 1996, the ball is again treated as a separate entity, with the timing of shots entirely down to the player, while the new AI ensures that defenders work to close down space and block efforts on goal. Similarly, distribution of passes works along the same lines, with players using the space available to them to switch the ball. Close control has also been enhanced with more control when dribbling the ball, and a number of subtle moves added to bypass defenders and move the ball into space. A huge range of options which provide a superb football simulation.

The main upgrades from year to year in sports simulators are the expected features such as extended and updated rosters, teams, players and stadiums, with extra game modes perhaps and improved AI; this is where PES 2009 conforms to the norm. The AI is more intelligent, there's a heightened sense of realism with unique camera angles and improved graphics as well as the functionality of PES 2009 over Xbox Live and in the brand new Become a Legend mode where players start off as an amateur footballer who becomes scouted out to play for a top club and then must prove that he can wing it with the pros.

Pro Evolution Soccer 4 IS the greatest football game of all time (until PES 5 is released on 21/10/05).
Having played the Pro Evolution Soccer series since it's inception on PS2 the 4th installment is undoubtebly the best of them all. It is the closest thing to real football you can get from a games console. The gameplay is superb with every game providing a new challenge. The simpler difficulty levels make it easy to pick up and play if you are a novice to the series but the real excitement is in the harder difficulty levels. Unlike most football games you actually need to think about how you can create a chance on goal and it is not possible to simply run through an entire team with 1 player. You are actually required to think about how to beat the defence by passing movements and crossfield passes to pull the defence from side to side. As in real life you often have to go back to go forward. The controls are very intuitive allowing for more skilled players to play defence splitting through balls, intricate one twos and take on opposing players. Even when you have created a chance it still requires a certain amount of skill to convert it, either from long range or close to the goal.
In order to be succesful it is also necessary to master the art of defending which again provides a great deal of satisfaction, wether it be a last ditch tackle or repelling the oppostion again and again in a nail biting climax. As you can only control one player at any time it is necessary to rely on the AI to control your other players and this is handled well with defenders positioning and decisions reflecting the situation of the game and the movement of attackers is also intelligently handled adding to the realism of the game. There are occasional mishaps which see defenders out of postion but this only adds to the realism and the drama.
Any football game is only as good as the gameplay and this is why Pro Evolution Soccer 4 is the greatest of all football games. The superb gameplay is well complemented by the crisp graphics and presentation with the big game atmosphere only being let down by the rather poor commentary from Peter Brackley (of Football Italia fame) and Trevor Brooking. The thing that really illustrates the calibre of this game is that a hard fought 1 -0 win is often more satisfying than a bigger victory and every goal you score or attack you thwart provides a certain amount of satisfaction as you know you have earned it.
Aside from the actual match day gameplay, there is a vast array of game types to chose from including World Cups, Euro Championships, Copa America and other Confederations competitions, international leagues and domestic leagues including officially licensed Serie A, La Liga and Dutch Ere Divisie. The Premiership is also available as are the French league and the German league but these are not officially endorsed (this means the strips are not the genuine ones and some of the players names are not either).
The main part of the game revolves around the Master League where you have the option to take any club team in the game (from the aformentioned leagues and a few others from around the world such as Porto, Corinthians, Boca Juniors e.t.c) and manage them seeking promotion from Division 2 in the first season and then gunning for glory in the big leagues from then on. This mode allows players to play the domestic league, domestic cup and european cups (effectively Champions League and Uefa Cup) simultaneously and take care of all your teams business including training and transfers. This is an incredibly addictive mode of play and I have lost countless hours to this over the last few months.
The only major gripe with the game is that some of the player names are not correct (due to Fifpro licensing agreements) Although it is possible to edit these names this is a bit of an annoyance as other football games have the official names but at the end of the day it is what happens on the pitch that counts and this is where this game clearly excels.
Overall this game is by far the best football simulation I have ever played and I will not hesitate to purchase the next installment of the series.
If you have never played any of the Pro Evolution series before and can't wait until PES 5 is released (21/10/05) or want to have a try first then I would recommend this game which is available from £15 - £20 and will keep you entertained for as long as you want ( I have had it for about a year and it is still the most played game in my house).

...it is an improvement on Pro Evo 3. The commentary on Pro Evo 4 is still well behind the likes of Fifa 2005 but still is much better than that in Fifa Street(see my review)
*Graphics* 4/5
The graphics in this game are very good. While they sometimes can be seen as blurred they are still top notch, for PS2 anyways. The graphics in terms of depthness and detail are probably not as good as Fifa 2005 or Fifa Street but are still very good, and I feel ... ...5/5 (basically constant play until Pro Evo 5)
This game has a infinitive lifespan (until around October when Pro Evo 5 is out). To win all the cups it will take you a very long time, and if you have mates who like the game you will always be playing it. Even though I have a more recent footy game, Fifa Street, I still spend the majority of time playin Pro Evo 4 with my mates.
A top class game ...

...big seller this Christmas with Pro Evolution Soccer. If you’re becoming all flustered wandering why they’ve abandoned the ISS games –don’t! Pro Evo is just the new name on top of what is essentially ISS 2 for the PS2 so essentially this is ISS 2. Just cast your mind back to the ... ...commentary. In Pro Evo the menus have had a total overhaul and now sport a clever music score that changes as you view different pages. Not only are all of the featured stadia full of life now – there are also new selections. Graphics are overhauled dramatically and no longer will you see limbs appearing out of other players’ chests during goal celebrations (more on graphics later). Commentary, well, that’s as bad as ever but we’ll get to that shortly. ...

Pro Evolution Soccer
Firstly, let me say that this game is not to be confused with ISS Soccer, a mistake that many of my friends and colleagues have made to their dismay.
There are two development teams working for the same software company, each focusing on a different game entirely, although only one game is worth the bother.
Pro Evolution Soccer is the natural progression for players of ISS Pro Evolution 2 on the original Playstation. It is ... ...that FIFA is better than Pro Evo is a nutcase.
If this applies to you, do not read on, my words are not for your eyes, therefore, do not post any sarcastic comments as they will not be taken heed of!
I’m sure you’re all aware of the rules of football, if not, why not? I obviously need not go through what the game is about, only more of what the game manages to do for the future of console gaming, and maybe describe the options available ...

...after months of anticipation ISS Pro Evolution Soccer has finally arrived on the PS2. The question arises though , do we believe all the hype , or are we going to be like alot of Manchester United supporters when Jaap Stam left the club , bitterly disappointed.
As an avid player of the Playstation 1 version , i loaded my disc into my machine with baited breath. Is this game going to kick FIFA 2002 into row Z ?. Am i going to throw This Is Football ... .... At first glance the games title screen looked a flashy version of it's PS1 predecessor. However once into the game , it felt just great. Anyone who has played ISS will be familiar with the controls and it's pick up and play feel has not changed. This game is designed for new players and experienced gamers alike.

Pro-EvolutionSoccer 5
Despite playing Fifa Football for most of my gaming life I decided to see what the fuss was all about with the latest in the Pro Evo franchise, No 5. The game has already reached a best-selling status by joining the many other elite Platinum games, which gives you a fantastic game for a fantastic price, saving you a bit of money! It boasts Arsenal's Thierry Henry and Chelsea's John Terry on the cover so you automatically know that these two Premiership giants are fully licensed as well as thousands of other players in Europe and the rest of the world. In the previous PES games this was a bit of a distraction because while the faces of the players reflected their real-life counterparts, the names were altered so it would not infringe on the player's copyright. Thankfully for the majority of the game is filled ...
Advantages: Briilant Graphics, player movments, passing and Master League Disadvantages: No real stadia, not as good comentry as FIFA
’ of the PS1 version Evo.2 that other teams never bought any players, while you could. You could improve you teams players over a few seasons, improving you squad over your competitors. In ProEvolutionSoccer (PS2 version) other computer controlled teams also improve their squads, making the who league system very realistic.
ProEvolutionSoccer also lets you compete in a World Cup, European Cup, Konami Cup, World League, European League and a custom league, enough to keep you satisfied. Each provides you with all the realism and excitement of the real thing, it’ just an amazing experience. While it may not have the real stadiums of the tournaments it has the same stadia with differing names, if you know what I mean; a minor flaw in an otherwise perfect game of football.

And so the great battle continues. It is the Arsenal v Man United in football and the England versus the Aussies in cricket. I am of course talking about the great battle of the PS2 giants: ProEvolutionSoccer versus Fifa. I hope this review will really help you decide on which game you should get, or even if you should get both like I have. I have gone for the question and answer format, which really seemed to work well in my 'Fifa World Cup 2006 (PS2)' review. I hope you enjoy reading my 50th review!!!!!!!
