As a thank you gesture to my wife for all her help my son recently bought her a Nintendo DS. I wasn't long before she discovered that it was puzzle games that were her forte, and of course that ever popular brain training, which incidentally I can't stand.
It therefore occurred to me that as part of her Christmas I might purchase a game in the ilk of puzzling. I'm not really up on games, it isn't really my scene so I did a bit of goggling and came up with a shortlist. Just before Christmas this game was getting a fair bit of advertising on TV and my wife happened to mention that she fancied it.......... so, the choice was made.
In essence it is a very simple concept, that being you have to discover a secret Golden Apple on behalf of the Lady of the manor. So it's of to St Mystere and to solve the riddle. Well if only .my £25 would have been gone in half an hour had that been the case. On arrival at the drawbridge at the entrance to the village you are greeted by some strange character who is not convinced of your identity, which is of course Professor Layton. You are accompanied on your mission by your side-kick Luke, who often helps a little in the solving of the puzzles. Many of the characters you will encounter are not very trusting and they also will require some form of proof that you are the great Professor Layton. So you are at the drawbridge trying to get across to the entrance to the village, so to prove your identity as the brilliant professor you must solve a problem before being permitted to continue.
Problem solved and the journey begins. In the village you can pretty much go anywhere you want, and in doing so you may if you are lucky perchance upon some gold coins. Lucky you these coins will prove very useful when you come across a puzzle that has you totally perplexed. The reason they will become useful is that you can use them to purchase hints to solve your current puzzle, and although on first glances many of the puzzles seem simple, deeper involvement will prove they never are.
As you patrol the village looking for clues you will come upon many of the locals, some helpful, some not so, but most of them suspicious and requiring proof of some kind, which inevitably leads to a puzzle. There are about 180 different puzzles and I mean different. Some are ones you might well have come across before, but never actually managed to solve, or if you did you have forgotten how and find yourself in that age old dilemma of scratching the head and searching inwardly for that little ounce of savvy that will get you through. Chances are though you are going to use one of those little gold coins to get at least one hint. You can purchase a maximum of 3 hints per puzzle, but use them sparingly as you are never sure if you will find more coins or not, and if not,you may not have sufficient to get to the end.
I've only had a few shots since it is proving very popular in our household, so we take it in turns. The graphics are pretty good and slightly quaint, but it is definitely the fiendishness of the puzzles that makes this a very hard game to put down once you get into it. During you investigation you may also find yourself finding bits of an old painting, which when all pieces are found will require a bit of brain power to rearrange into a very helpful painting.
I found this to be a very intriguing game with lot of nice little graphics and plenty to occupy the gamer, and although it really isn't my kind of thing I did find myself sneaking a shot when the DS was sitting on the table just pleading for me to solve another puzzle. All in all well worth the £25 at ASDA cos you are going to have hours of fun and brainstorming to solve this little bunch of puzzles.

That makes two of us with the brain training nonsense Don, I'll live with mine as it is thank you very much! My friend below sadly lives up a different street to me......sadly because I'd love her as a neighbour! Richard.
