Professor Layton and the Curious Village (Nintendo DS and DSi)
This game is a mystery puzzle game, where your job is to solve a mystery of a village called St Mystere, where a rich baron (Baron Reinhold) has died, and left his fortune hidden in the village along with hundreds of puzzles to help you find it.
It follows a story, where you are playing the characters of Professor Layton, a puzzle solver, and his apprentice Luke. Your job is to crack the mysteries of St Mystere and solving all of the hidden puzzles!
The Story: The story is excellent, and unlike some games which you just run around a find things, this one has an actual story to keep you guessing, as it's a mystery it's very very fun and very exciting, and as with a normal story, there are twists and turns which you don't see coming! Professor Layton and his apprentice Luke are in the town of St Mystere on the hunt for the Golden Apple, which was left by the late Baron left behind. But as the story starts to evolve, 11 more mysteries come out of the woodwork which need to be solved.
Like who is the weird Detective who is snooping around, what are those weird noises coming from the spooky looking tower...? The story is very interesting and unlike many games which are simply the game and puzzles and nothing else, this story is like watching a film or reading a book as well which you can really get into and learn new things as the story progresses. The ending of the story is excellent, and you really don't suspect what is going to happen!
The Puzzles: There are around 120 puzzles in this game, some of which you have to complete before you can progress and some of which are hidden throughout the game and the village, both with people and also in some objects which you can miss out and go back and complete when the game has finished. The puzzles go from easy through medium, hard and then expert. Some of them are extremely difficult, and I found I had to go on the internet and cheat for a couple of the puzzles which I had to pass to be able to progress through the game. They go from word puzzles, juigsaw type puzzles, object moving puzzles, number puzzles, all of which take time to work out and really work your brain. Some are easier than others, whilst some can even be guessed or worked out via process of elimination, whilst some are very hard and you need to sit down with a piece of paper and work it out carefully. Luckily you don't only get a certain amount of goes, but the amount of points you gain for the puzzles completion goes down everytime you get it wrong.
You can find "hint coins" hidden around the town, which you can use on every puzzle to help you out, these don't give you the answers, but do help you work out the puzzles easier, sometimes these help, and sometimes they don't, but it's worth collecting the coins and trying them!
Gameplay: Once you have played the game you can go back and do the puzzles you missed, but once this is done, you can't really progress (there is something about a password which you can get in the next game which means you can continue further, but I don't have the new game yet so I can't say what this is). The game took me and my husband around 3 weeks to complete with around an hours game play a couple of nights a week.
Price: The price of the game when I bought it was £24.99 from Game, it was at first £29.99, and never went down in price in any shops which I looked in unlike most games which start dropping in price almost as soon as they come out! But this one continued to be popular and in demand, and so for a year it didn't reduce, until the new Pandoras Box game was starting to be released, when it went down by a whopping...£5. But the game is excellent for the price which you pay for it really, it's great fun and really gets you thinking!
You can get the game on Amazon for around £10 (used) and around £15 (new).
Seeing as you could in theory sell the game on Amazon after you have completed the game, you will be getting some of your money back!!! Though I haven't and wouldn't do this as knowing me I'll want to play it again the minute it's gone!!!!!
All in All: The game is excellent, and I will definitely be buying the next game in the series (Pandora's box). You'll love this game if you like puzzle games!
The game is definitely aimed at an older audience, and certainly not for children. My 13 year old brother played my game, and he is a pretty clever kid, but he struggled with some of the harder puzzles, so I would say the age range is probably from around 12 upwards, but that the younger kids might take longer to play the game!
I loved this game, and actually now writing this review makes me want to go and grab my DS and play it again!!!!
Amazing game! 10/10!
