Dreamweaver 3 Bible
Advantages: Extremely through and easy to read Disadvantages: A lot to take in, but if you use it more as a reference book rather than one to read and learn you should be ok
...what you get) aspect of Dreamweaver is hard, when I've been writing in HTML for years. However, I decided to buy the Dreamweaver 3 Bible, as although I was producing moderatly decent webpages with Dreamweaver, I had the strangest feeling that I was missing out on something..... It turns out I was! However I was fazed, and still am by the size of the book (over 2 inches thick!), I found the easiest way was just to skim the book, then when there was ... ...included with a trial of Dreamweaver (in case you haven't already got it), Flash4 and Fireworks3, as well as over 300 dreamweaver extensions, to help you make even more fantastic websites. It also shows you how you can incoporate Flash and Fireworks into your website, but thats a little over my head just yet! All in all a definite good investment if you want to get the best use out of Dreamweaver, after all if you've spent £200 on the software, you ...

VB 6.0 Programming made easier
Advantages: Simplifies the VB programming approach Disadvantages: For the more advanced programmer, lacks detail
...time I came across the Visual Basic programming language was when I was studying for my Higher National Diploma. This book was recommended to us and was frequently used by the tutor.
The book by Tim Anderson is designed with the novice in mind. The book covers all of the basics the newcomer will require to get up and running with the Visual Basic language and covers Visual Basic 6.
The book starts by introducing the reader to Visual Basic. It provides ... ...Learning Edition, Professional, Enterprise and Visual Basic for Applications in Office. The reader is taken through the application creation process, step by step, helping the reader to understand the practical side more. Whilst going through these stages, information is provided to explain various features that are used as part of the development environment, such as toolbars, the properties window and the project explorer.
Once this initial background ...

The Complete Desktop Companion
Advantages: The best desktop Java companion avalble Disadvantages: Due to the size of Java, the book has been slit over several publications
The book is THE required Java reference. Originally pointed toward the series by a college lecturer, it immediately became an irreplaceable handbook, allowing me to become competent in Java in less than a day. Owners of previous versions of the book could do worse than pick up this update. For these new to Java, the updated introduction to Java chapters is concise and informative, providing one of the best tutorials available. Although, due to the ...

SAMS Teach yourslef Java in 21 days - Too good to be true!
Advantages: Good examples, Clear Layout Disadvantages: No coverage of program design
I teach Java to sixth formers and every year I get al least one who goes against what I say and end up buying this book. On the surface I guess it looks attractive, 24 hours to learn a new programming language? Sounds great. Having read through the book it doesn't do a bad job of teaching the very basics, data types, functions, procedures, assignement, iteration, selection all covered. There is example code for people to try and the book extends ... ...is that it skims over so much. At no point are people taught about sound programming concepts or the thought processes behind how you go about designing and creating a program. Thge book also splits things down into "hours" to give you an idea of how far along you are. I decided to give it a try and read through the whole thing completing all the suggested exercises. It took me over 30 hours and I have been programming for years so hopefully avoided ...

JFC in a Nutshell
Advantages: Good reference Disadvantages: Lacks examples
...series of three books covering Java 2 1.2 and 1.3 in a very short number of pages. The book starts with chapters explaining the concepts in brief (with very few examples) and then the majority of the book is a reference guide to the libraries. Contents are Swing, AWT, Java 2D, printing, data transfer, and applets. It assumes you know the basics and want to move on to develop GUIs. I had trouble with this one and had to use another book as well to ... ...of reference.
As with Java in a Nutshell though, those kind people at O’Reilly have put every example from every Java book on the website, so you can get the examples from the O'Reilly Java 2D book as well as the Java Examples in a Nutshell and work out what’s going on and how it’s done. See http://java.oreilly.com/ for details.
