on-the-edge action demands more than just speed. PGR 3 is a unique, next-generation racing experience where you can design your own tracks, drive any car any time, star on Gotham TV, and much more. Online or off, you need to combine breathtaking speed with dynamic style, if you want to be the next Gotham World Champion.

To back this up, feel free to look at the stats for my old Xbox Live GamerTag Brutebasher on PGR2 and Tangled Spider for PGR3.
PGR3 was a definate purchase for me when I bought my Xbox 360. I knew I'd love the game but naturally, for such a popular and established game series, there was the chance that it may fail to live up to the two top class games that came before it.
7 months since I bought the game at lauch, I think it is now time that I sat down and shared my thoughts after extensive play. It may be a controversial statement but I'm going to come out and say that PGR3 isn't really an improvement over PGR2 in terms of gameplay. I could give you some scores and end the review now but that'd be boring. I'll explain just why I feel it failed to live up to the hype. I would however like to point out right now that this game is top of it's class when it comes to arcade Xbox 360 racers.
There is one huge feature or lack thereof that diminished the enjoyment of this game for me. This is the lack of any progression system! Since the dawn of games, the appeal of racing games has been to start off with slower cars and earn your way up the ranks to the super cars. PGR2 did an outstanding job of this and added variety with muscle cars and SUV's as well as the everyday cars you see on the streets such as Mini's and VW Beetles. While these cars were slow, I found it really fun driving them. It required more skill than the faster cars at times because your lack of speed and acceleration could make it harder to catch up after crashing yourself. Careful overtaking was also promoted on the harder difficulty levels. In PGR3 you simply have to ace a few races and you'll have enough in-game credits to purchase any car you desire. The game then matches the AI cars in races to that of the car you've chosen. But still, where's the fun in unlocking a Porsche or Ferrari at the beginning of the game only to get bored of it half way through and have nothing better to drive? It also removes any fun in trying to collect all of the cars.
The game menus are also really annoying in my opinion. In PGR3 the menus flip over and the framerate drops as they do so. I imagine you may be crying out that menus aren't a big deal but let me tell you they are. Every option in this game can take a long time to reach and be awkward to locate. You also have to wait for information to appear for the use of animated pre-race information also prevails. You may want to look at the track course your next race will be taking but the map will appear for a couple of seconds only to be replaced by other information. In contrast, PGR2 did a great job of menus. The layout was flat and the top ranks of the Xbox Live leaderboard for an event would be shown clearly. Finding leaderboards is probably the worse part of the bloated PGR3 menus.
Now I've dicussed the game progression and menus, I'll get down to the actual gameplay. This is where you'll notice the jaw dropping graphics of next generation game environments such as London and Tokyo, especially so if you own a HDTV as I do. The re-intriduction of London as a city is probably the best thing to happen in PGR3. It was one of four cities in the first game and PGR2 fans always dreamed of it being a downloadable add-on only for the dream to fade. But alas, London is back so be sure to check out the detailed trees, the London Eye and numerous other landmarks. PGR3 includes a track editor too so you can purposefully route your race around the sights. You could even pretend you're a London signtseeing bus if you wanted. As is the accuraccy of this game, if you live in or have visited London, you'll feel right at home.
You'll also notice the beauty of the cars in this game. They unsurprisingly have far more polygons than in previous games but that's exactly what you'd expect of a next generation racing game. A lot of these extra polygons are down to the fact that you can now drive from inside the car! A top request from past players was that they wanted to play with the steering wheel and window in front of them. This is a great feature but I'll admit that I tried it out and never used it again. I simply cannot control a racing game from an inside view. You can look sideways to keep an eye on other cars but that usually resulted in me slamming into a barrier immediately in front of me. As you cycle through different views, you'll also notice that the engine noises are realistic and change location in real-time if you have a 5.1 sound setup which is highly recommended for any Xbox 360 game may I add. The car mechanics are not totally accurate because the cars have been altered slightly to make sure the game is fun.
When you're racing, you don't have the luxury of watching the scenery flying past. You'll be too busy doing your best to weave around the AI cars. Unfortunately on higher difficulty levels this game can be a little more like the Burnout series of racing games. The AI will for the most part stick closely to it's perfect racing line and knock you about if you try and squeeze past. Of course if you're good at taking good lines yourself, you should find yourself taking the lead. Unfortunately the best strategy in this game remains to smash the other cars on the first corner and take the lead. Eventually it'll seem like they've given up chasing you but make a serious mistake and they'll return.
When you're racing you'll notice that the game can look a little 'unreal'. This is down to the fact that the game runs at 30 frames per second which is less than ideal for a racing game. This shouldn't worry you too much because the game is still responsive because it reacts to your controller usage 60 times a second. If you want reasons for why this game isn't running at the preferred region of 60fps, look no further than the detail. So much graphical beauty in a game is bound to be demanding on your three Xbox 360 processors. I also suspect that it comes down to wasteful processing. It is possible to jump out of a racetrack and then proceed to explore the whole city. If the game only loaded the scenery you should see from the track, it'd have far less to load/display and could therefore focus more on even better detail or improved framerate.
PGR3 is packed with game modes both online and off. The main event types include races (no surprise there), speed challenges where you have to cross a line above a certain speed and cone challenges where you dodge around cones and perform other tricks to obtain high Kudos scores. There are more event types but I'd rather write a review and analysis than a feature checklist.
Online and multiplayer add more modes. In particular I'd like to mention Cat and Mouse. To play this, you'll need to download a recent update from Xbox Live. This was the most fun player created gamemode from PGR2 and to see the developers create it for PGR3 is a wonderful gift to the community. The game basically has you grouped into teams. Each team has at least one fast car and at least one slow. The team to get one of their slow cars over the finish line first wins! The fast cars will push their own slow car to speed it up or they'll sit around blocking the other team while their slow car speeds away. A weaponless car game with strategy - refreshing! The team at Bizarre have recreated the gametype flawlessly minus one small thing. It can be hard to tell which cars are on which teams. If they'd simply given the cars on each team the same colour paint job, it'd be perfect. Of course, I'm sure Bizarre would have loved to do this but the car manufacturers would have gone crazy.
Don't take to heart my negative points in this review, of which there are many. I highly suggest you try this game. Most of my negative thoughts are probably derived from my familiarity with what I consider to be the superior PGR2 and I hope I've sufficiently explained why. I'm not really suggesting you purchase PGR2 instead of this next generation gem. I've just aiming to point out that PGR2 is better in my personal opinion. There's no news of a fourth game in the PGR series and I wouldn't be surprised if Bizarre Creations doesn't bother. The only way they could improve would be to take what made PGR2 more fun and apply the new fancy graphics. PGR2 will remain a classic in my heart and doesn't need to be recreated with a new lick of paint. There's a reason after all that old games have strong followings. PGR3 is a great game and if you don't like to compare games as closely as I do, you'll be easily pleased as long as you're actually wanting to play a sometimes challenging arcade racer with real licensed cars.
Advantages: Beautiful to play and look at Disadvantages: extremely addictive
...start from the beginning.
Project Gotham Racing 3 as you might already have guessed is the third instalment of the series and despite the fact that PGR2 was amazing, this smokes it without doubt. I think we shall have to start on the breathtaking graphics. There has never been such realism in a racing game ever, the Bizarre team really outdid themselves yet again, by taking unimaginable amounts of digital photographs of the various different areas, ... ...the Nurburgring, they have achieved a tremendous amount of detail and most importantly realism. The developer's use of an immeasurable number of digital photographs for reference has yielded meticulous textures that wrap the convincing models of each locale. And unlike previous titles in the series, the cityscapes in PGR3 are absolutely littered with spectators watching the proceedings. Their appearance alone helps add much needed realism to the ...

Advantages: Stunning and realistic in every aspect!!! Disadvantages: Needs more cars and garages!!!
This game is without question the closest I will ever get to experience driving a real Ferrari. This game is perfect for me in every way.You have real radio stations with todays music playing in the cars, depending on what country you are racing in will deter what music plays, or if you have stored some of your own music on the hard drive you can use that.
The graphics on this game are just to easy to sum up in one word. PERFECT. Each car has been ... ...like the real thing. You can look around the cockpit of your vehicle when you racing.Picture this, your racing along the Nurbergring in your Ferrari 355GTS and in the sournd sound in your rear left speaker you can hear the growl of the famous DBR9 creeping on your tail. You look in the interior mirror and see he is gaining on you and fast. You make your character look left and see the DBR9 overtake you.Sure you have lost a place but seeing in computer ...

...I made sure I got Project Gotham Racing 3 with it.
Project Gotham Racing 3 (PGR3) was the first racing game I ever played where winning isn't the only thing you need to worry about. At first I thought I may have got a bad game, but I was so wrong. PGR3 is a mix of flash cars; high speeds and winning in style that just begs you to keep on playing it. Having never played any Project Gotham Racing games before I was surprised at how many tracks were ... ...be in up to 5 cities but they are different courses in a city and that makes it harder to remember a certain track and therefore seems just as new even if you have been on it a few times before as using other tracks will confuse you which way you turn next, unless you have a really good memory of course. The tracks are set in some very nice environments and very enjoyable to drive in.
Controller set-up is quite similar to other racing games considering ...

Advantages: Graphics are the best I have seen on a console motor racing game. Disadvantages: Limited number of cars available.
Project Gotham Racing is my first adventure into the world of xbox 360 and my first taste of Microsoft games consoles. I guess my gaming experience has been quite normal having spent my early teens working my way through successive generations nintendo consoles. Then I grew up and moved on the Playstion where my gaming tastes changed from platform games to racing games and first person shooters. The game is so easy to get into with the Novice difficulty setting give you time to become acustomed to the controls of your chosen ride whilst still earning credits (which are used to purchase new cars) and gaining kudos which unlock new aspects of the game. Personally ...

...I had also heard of Project Gotham 4 and how it was a really good game and thought that this game was going to be a really fun and realistic racing game. How wrong I was! I have to admit I have not played this game much as I just hated it so much and have better games to play with so my review may not be completely accurate. --------The Graphics--------
PGR2 is very, very impressive in the aesthetics department. There is a great possibility that the Xbox360 game ProjectGothamRacing3 will blow the graphics of this Xbox game into oblivion, but until the next generation is upon us this is a visual feat to take pleasure in. The cars themselves look beautiful, and the environments that you drive do look as realistic as one could expect from this generation of console (much better than the PlayStation 2 Gran Turismo efforts). One aspect of the game I like is when you are driving at night and crash one of your headlights; the light goes off making it more complicated to ...
