There's something special about a street racing game. Granted, there have been some wonderful circuit-based racers, but, nevertheless, there's nothing quite like charging down a long, narrow straight, side by side with a rival at 200mph or expertly drifting your car within an inch of the barrier and getting away with it to really get the heart pumping.
One series that knows a thing or two about this is Project Gotham Racing. While it must be said that PGR3 was slightly underwhelming, such is the expertise developer Bizarre Creations has displayed in this field over successive versions it has ensured that the PGR series has become synonymous with racing on the Xbox. And certainly, it's a reputation that the fourth in the series cements with a display of excellence that not only restores your faith in the series after its slightly iffy predecessor, but also makes a very strong case for being the best racer on the 360.
Visually, the game looks as good as anything I've seen on the 360 to date. While some might bemoan the fact that everything shifts at half the frame rate of Forza 2, the sheer amount of additional detail this has allowed Bizarre to pack into the levels more than makes up for this. Take a second to look at the passing buildings and you'll see light reflecting off the windows. Likewise, the additional detail on the tract - additional run-off strips, markings, etc - coupled with the crowds and advertising billboards all ensure the courses look more like proper racing courses, but thanks to the intricacies crammed into the buildings and scenery (where things like bumps, windowsills and the like are much better defined), each location still has a unique feel and vibe to it.
The improved texture quality and lighting- and special effects impress immensely as well. While the low ambient lighting and abundance of primary colours in its textures gave PGR3 an almost cartoon-esque look, PGR4's more refined textures, less dramatic shadowing and improved reflection effects give it a greatly more realistic appearance. But it's not just the big improvements that catch the eye, with the small touches helping to craft a more robust, realistic visual experience, The damage models have been toned down to be more realistic than those of PGR3. Likewise, watch a replay and you'll find that the cameras all feature a host of minor imperfections (distortion, slight wobbles and the like) to make them seem more lifelike, yet because their position is so good, it still displays the action at its dramatic best. The same is true of the subtle buffeting that afflicts the behind-and-above cameras used in game, which helps heighten the sensation of speed in the game.
The net result of all of this is that PGR4 avoids the slightly sterile feel normally associated with racing games and offers a much more involving, more immersive and more true-to-life visual style: and irrespective of whether it's the wholly believable manner in which the iron girders that adorn New York's bridges whoosh past your car at 170mph or how uncannily accurate London looks when you're power sliding around the capital's streets, you can't help but be impressed by what Bizarre has managed to do with the 360.
But PGR4's brilliance extends beyond its textured skin. Although the weather effects, additional cities and bikes are all major additions, if anything, it's the refinements to the traditional elements that stand out the most. The cars trademark Gotham weightiness - reassuringly heavy, but yet slippery and responsive enough to be fun - with speed on the track coming from being able to strike a perfect balance between drifting the car enough to carry extra speed through the corners, while not striking the barriers or losing too much time sliding around. However, while it will seem familiar to PGR veterans, at the same time, the handling has been tightened up a little and the cars are now more noticeably affected by bumps on the surface or passing over rumble strips on the side of the track.
The circuits you'll race around have also been enhanced as well. Although in many cases they're the same as the ones you'll know from PGR3, they've still improved a lot. Additional markings have been added, rumble strips have been elongated and in tricky corners, the barriers have been pushed back to allow for errors - in short, they feel more like legitimate racing circuits than ever before, This isn't just cosmetic either - the longer rumble strips double up as suggested brake marking points (which can be crossed with no penalty) make overtaking all the easier. While the benefits of these take a while to sink in, they do really add to the feel.
The subtle tweaks made to the Kudos system also work a treat. While certain staples still remain - such as being rewarded for the drifting, grabbing air and the like, or losing a Kudos chain for clattering head first into a wall - the changes help to make it a more balanced experience. For instance, brush a wall with the side of your car, and you'll keep your Kudos. Likewise, hitting top speed will also net you a considerable amount (especially on tracks with longer straights, such as the Nurburgring or New York's bridges), meaning that you don't necessarily need to worry about showboating too much or avoiding contact at all costs.
The various race disciplines and car selection cater to this perfectly. Broadly speaking, these can be divided into two groups: those focusing on speed and those focusing on showing off. For instance, with races or speed challenges you'll find that a car with a lot of grip and little drift will see hitting your targets every time, whereas more Kudos gathering challenges (such as Time Vs. Kudos or Superstar) will naturally favour a car that slides around a lot - and each class of vehicle has plenty of both to choose from.
As a result of this, the gameplay feels fantastically balanced and rewarding to play, and although we have a few reservations about the calendar-based layout of the career mode, the manner in which it encourages you to use a variety of vehicles is refreshing - and even if you don't warm to the career mode, the arcade and other single player elements will still offer you months, maybe even years, of longetivity.
However, there are a few contentious points, Firstly, there are the motorbikes. Although Bizarre has done a marvellous job in shoehorning bikes into the gameplay without having to alter the control system too much or widen the circuits by stupid amounts to account for the way bikes handle, nevertheless, they do feel somewhat out of play and are slightly frustrating to use. With bikes requiring a greater turning circle than a car, getting you bike through the bends requires a greater deal of precision. On top of this, their lower top speeds means it's unpractical to perform stunts on straights due to the loss in speed, yet due to the fact bikes seldom slide, it's tricky to gain Judos in the corners. Given that you don't necessarily need to use the bikes, though if you don't like them you can stick with the comfort of the cars.
The weather underwhelms somewhat too. Although it's neat to see the weather going through its cycle - literally, the visual impact they have on the locations are stunning in places - there's no denying its impact on the gameplay isn't as great as, say, Segar Rally's track deformation technology, with the most that happens is that the cars slide around more and will aquaplane somewhat in puddles.
Finally, there are the cities. While some of the additions such as Quebec (which is very reminiscent of fan favourite Edinburgh from PGR2) are welcome additions to the series, nevertheless, you can't help but feel that the likes of London, the Nurburgring and New York carried over from PGR4 are still stronger locations to go racing. Fortunately, the revisions made to these - along with the natural challenge they present - ensures they still feel fresh and fun to play, but it's a shame that the new locations couldn't match the existing ones.
However, these are minor niggles that promptly pale into significance when compared to the excellence of the rest of Bizarre Creations' latest racer. In terms of both graphics and gameplay, PGR4 offers a near perfect blend of balance, depth and accessibility that works well irrespective of whether you want to sit down for a prolonged gaming session or just fancy kicking back and enjoying blasting around some of the world's most iconic cities with some truly awesome machines. Make no mistake, if you love your 360, PGR4 demands a place in your games collection.
Advantages: Best driving game by far. Disadvantages: None
Project Gotham Racing 4 (PGR4) is, surprise, surprise, number 4 in a very successful series of racing games, first seen in the original xbox, now xbox 360.
I was desperate to play this game having played previous PGR's (1 & 2), and having never like any other racing games, I am somewhat loyal to this series.
Basically it is a game that consists of numerous ways and types of racing with over a hundred different types of cars and now motorbikes. ... ...road cars, hot hatches, street racers, supercars and concept cars.
The main types of 'races' are:
Street race, where one races other drivers around streets of the world including London, new York, Tokyo, Quebec, St petersburg; all in all well over a hundered different tracks.
Kudos challenge, where one 'earns kudos' (points) by doing certain things, such as wheelies on bikes or handbrake turns.
Cone sprints: where one has to demonstrate precision ...

Advantages: Visually stunning, sounds fantastic, gameplay is entertaining, career is competitive, motorbikes are a fresh addition Disadvantages: none that i can find so far
...always have high expectations for project gotham racing as i have owned all of them. This one is a very good game. I am playing it right now in fact. There are so many new features from the last ones, and the major one is motorbikes. I love them, especially the super fast ones on the test tracks. Nothing like powering around a test track at 200mph with full surround sound on an hd tv. Just beautiful.
The single player has arcade mode, which is great ... ...is very entertaining. But the main part is the career. I have spent the past couple of days doing the career along with multiplayer. The career is very cleverly designed, you go through a calender into each event, with majors in between which give you secial prizes and invitations which get you into major events and also different cars. The way to purchase cars for mutliplayer tho, it through career as you have to earn the kudos to buy the car sets.

Advantages: Everything- huge lifespan, great graphics etc etc Disadvantages: Nothing
Project Gotham Racing is the best racing series going and, in my opinion, PGR 4 is the best racing game out on xbox 360.
It has so many different things that you can do, which gives the game a huge lifespan and makes it better than any other racing game.
Career- A massive career is present in PGR 4 where you have to work your way up the world drivers leaderboard in an attempt to become world number 1. You play back to back tournaments which have ... ...also features 'invitationals' to earn special cars.
Arcade- 10 chapters, each with 6 events and each event has 5 difficulties. This mode adds a great amount to the games lifespan as it will keep you busy, entertained and challenged.
Multiplayer/Free Race- Another mode for you and your friends to have custom races with your favourite cars.
Online- Features several race modes incl. Single race, Team race, Single and Team Championships. Online also ...

This game is called project Gotham racing in short it is called pgr4, in this review i will call this game pgr4 in short of the actual name (PROJECT GOTHAM RACING 4).
Many racing games have been made for the 360, such as Colin Mcrae's dirt, ForzaMotorsport 2 and many other games. All these games have received good reviews by the public and critics but probably one of the most entertaining and simplest games to play has to be pgr4 for the 360. (Vehicles)

The vehicles in class a you would expect to see in the best racing tournaments in the world being driven by lewis Hamilton but the vehicles in class g you would expect your granddad to drive. The vehicles are fun because they seem to act realistically to your commands of a push of the button and all the vehicles have a rating of hard or medium or easy rating to tell you ...

Advantages: Graphically great, sounds awesome, career is new and fresh, mulitplayer is just next level Disadvantages: None whatsoever
Project Gotham Racing 4 (PGR4) is the 4th in the series and a return to the good old days. For those of you that hadn't played the previous versions, PGR1 was good, PGR2 was great and PGR3 was sadly a bit of a let down. PGR4 however gets everything right and is a fantastic driving game and fully lives up to all the hype and expectation that preceeded it. There are alot of new features from the previous version with the most noticable being the addition ... ...of this at first, but to be honest, it works and works really really well. It just adds a different dimension to an already fantastic game. Powering down the straights at 200mph + with the sound pumping out is an audio and visual treat, at times it just blows you away. There are 2 main parts to the game, the single player and the mulitplayer. The single player game consists of an arcade mode which is great, but the main part is the career. The career ...

Advantages: Graphics are the best I have seen on a console motor racing game. Disadvantages: Limited number of cars available.
ProjectGothamRacing is my first adventure into the world of xbox360 and my first taste of Microsoft games consoles.
I guess my gaming experience has been quite normal having spent my early teens working my way through successive generations nintendo consoles. Then I grew up and moved on the Playstion where my gaming tastes changed from platform games to racing games and first person shooters. This is when I first encountered the Gran Turismo series and I was hooked. Which I followed onto the PS2 which ultimately led to GT4 probably the most complete driving simulator available.
I wasn't planning on buying an XBOX360 I intended to wait and see how the PS3 shaped up. But, by chance an opertunity to purchase a xbox360 premium pack and PGR3 at my local supermarket arose. I decided to buy it to sell on ebay, but ...

great game, highly enjoy playing it. Love playing it online, especially the online career, very addictive spent hours playing it. Got the game when i first bought my xbox360, didn't think it was going to be anything special, but was definitly a perfect game to have with the xbox360. I think the game has died down a little now, seeing as projectgothamracing4 has finally come out. I have not yet bought projectgothamracing4 yet, so i am currently still playing the third one, once in a while. I would have to say that projectgothamracing 3 is most probably one of the best and most excitable racing game that i have played on the xbox360 and am looking foward to buying the fourth one. ...
