As anyone who has read any of my recent reviews will know, I recently moved in with boyfriend, we also recently celebrated our two year anniversary. We both moved from our parental homes so we started with no furniture, no electrical goods and certainly no kitchen appliances. This resulted in various shopping trips to all kinds of shops in many different towns across the county. The irony of us purchasing this toaster is that we were in Comet looking for a vacuum cleaner when my boyfriend spotted an ideal bargain. A gift set comprising of a kettle, a coffee maker and a toaster, on sale for £15.00, my boyfriend will never
let me forget that he spotted this one first.
Feeling very proud of his observational skills my boyfriend had to go to the checkout to check that this astounding price was correct. When we found it was we quickly bought one and left still thinking Comet had made a mistake. We rushed home and opened the box. We found inside three boxes, each product was individually packaged, considering this set was so cheap I was expecting the items to be thrown in rather more haphazardly.
Inside the toaster box itself, there was the usual plastic and polystyrene wrapping, a one year guarantee and the expected user manual, which I never once looked at and think I have probably lost now.
The toaster itself has black plastic casing, as well as the price of the product this was a contributing factor in buying the Proline set. We have very pale beige worktops which means the visual impact of black appliances is huge but makes it look very co-ordinated with the matching black kettle and coffeemaker and a black knife block from another set. One of the reasons I have grown to love this toaster as it always looks clean as it so shiny. On the front of the toaster there is a large dial which controls the length of time of toasting, this dial is silver coloured plastic and ranges from 1 to 7. Above this dial there are three small silver buttons, one represents defrosting mode and one allows bagel heating on the wire rack above the toaster, I have no idea what the third button does. I have never used it and never needed to, I could do with that lost instruction manual about now. The wire rack above the toaster can be used by turning another dial on the left hand side of the toaster. I have never used this myself but if I wanted to the idea is very simple. Under this dial there is a removable crumb tray which means the toaster doesn't get full of mouldy old crumbs. On the right hand edge of the toaster there is the manual slider which allows you to lower the bread into the toaster for toasting.
The main disadvantage of this toaster is that there is no prescribed way to cancel the toasting. I have found by pushing the slider back up the toast will pop out rather nicely but forcing this mechanism is obviously not ideal. In order to stop having to force this mechanism I now tend to toast things on 2 or 3 and then add a little more toasting if required. The other disadvantage is that the power cable on this toaster is rather short, approx 9 inches. As we have our toaster and sandwich toaster using the same socket and being changed over every few days this is rather inconvenient.
However, I think the cost and the stylish look of this appliance easily make out for these small flaws. Since we have had this toaster, over 3 months, we have experienced no problems at all, except when I forget to turn it on. I would recommend this toaster to anyone looking for a cheap toaster, especially anyone with a small kitchen as this is one of the smallest toasters I have encountered, not that I have encountered very many.
I know this is a rather short review, but, well, it's a toaster!!
After having this toaster just over a year, I am very pleased with our purchase. This little toaster has never let us down, it is used on a nearly daily basis, whether for my breakfast or my boyfriend's crumpety snacks. I would highly recommend Proline kitchen appliances to anyone looking for a bargain.
