If you’ve read my last review you’d know it featured a rather “trigger happy” fella’ who went by the name of Alec Mason. This review features a pretty violent bloke by the name of Alex Mercer, the prototype, maybe it’s just me, but Alec Mason and Alex Mercer in the same month, coincidence or conspiracy. Whatever the case this games much better; it’s got zombies.
The game rather abruptly started following a group of soldiers in a beautifully rendered cinematic. The camera follows a series of red vines growing all over buildings until it zooms in on Alex Mercer, the hooded “Assassins Creed” style killer. The streets are lined with the bodies of the dead and then you’re thrown in to the action. Up till now absolutely nothing has been explained to you. You find yourself with loads of different powers, and a constant bombardment of zombie pedestrians and tutorial and hint boxes.
After a rather stop and start experience having to plough through loads of text every 5 seconds the story kicks in.
The plot is very cleverly driven forward by Alex Mercer himself told from the future – “Day 18 of infection” between him and an unknown character, there’s an awful lot of depth to the plot with a lot of twist and turns and surprises which was quite a surprise itself as it’s been a poorly promoted title.
The game is another open world sandbox game set in NYC, doesn’t quite have the detail liberty city offered but still a big open world with a virus slowly spreading and sending everyone a little crazy. As Alex you have a wide selection of powers at your disposal many of which have to be unlocked through story progression and collecting enough experience points to buy the upgrade. Some of the less destructive and gory powers include the ability to run up the side of buildings and literally glide over rooftops, pick up and throw vehicles and being able to “grab and consume” civilians and soldiers, this adds and nifty stealth element to the game allowing you to infiltrate buildings disguised as soldiers and even absorb their memories to fill in the blanks in yours (another plot driven by a character with amnesia).
The more visually stunning powers enable you to shape your body on the move in to dangerous weapons including claws that nicely slice through peoples torsos revealing what they’ve had for breakfast, giant hammer firsts and many more the final one being a huge blade that you can lunge at enemies for. It’s safe to say this game definitely satisfies that lust every gamer (and regular humanoid) feels, the desire for power beyond your wildest dreams, to have superpowers but to be able to live in that morally grey section of not being a complete twisted psychopath and not never being able to harm the civilians that jeer at you for being a freak.
Of course this wouldn’t be a game unless there was some decent competition for your new found abilities and you’ll run in to a regular supply of tanks, choppers, hunters, super soldiers, and regular soldiers who appear to of ditched protecting people and gone in favour of doing whatever they can (Read: Kill whatever they can) in favour of stopping you.
The missions are fairly varied, ranging from kill this guy involved with the breakout of the infection or protect this person or infiltrate this and eventually you’ll reach one of the spectacular boss fights. I’ve been waiting for a decent challenge from a game for a while now and this managed to quench my first especially one boss fight in particular involving one about 4 stories high and the size of a city block which took a good 4 hours to kill after dying to the gazillionth time.
In terms of graphics the games nothing special, it’s all a pretty low render quality but works well and loads very quickly but it’s fairly obvious there hasn’t been much change from when the game was supposed to be released last year.
Overall I’ve had a great experience with this game, it’s provided some fresh new challenges to me, includes hundreds of side missions to work through and an excellent quality gameplay style that will keep you entertained long after the story mode has been completed. And who could forget the 200 orbs hidden round the city for huge EP reward, happy hunting Prototype.
Advantages: Great Story, Great Gameplay and Great Fun! Disadvantages: Graphics could be better and some combos seem pointless.
Prototype is about Alex Mercer; a man who wakes up to find he knows nothing of his past and is gifted with incredible powers. Mercer ultimately wants to find out what happened to him, who did it to him, and to seek revenge when he does. Perhaps one of the most fun to play characters that I personally have ever experienced, Mercer is sinister and shrouded in mystery. Mercer sets out on a mission to discover his past and the conspiracies of a company ... ...Graphics are not spectacular in prototype but they are satisfactory. The Cut Scenes of course are stunning like in all games but the in game graphics themselves are not quite as cutting edge. The surroundings of themselves are not boring but are not jaq dropping. There are landmarks such as central park and times square that breakaway from the repetive buildings dotted around. Also all Hives and Military bases look very similar if not exactly the ...

Advantages: +a cool concept taking games like Assassins creed and marvel games and making a hybrid Disadvantages: -Graphics aren't perfect, - not very difficult
...excited about the release of prototype since it was announced, the visuals looked awesome from trailers and the gameplay looked fantastic. In case you dont know, Prototype is about a guy who wakes up in a morgue with strange powers, while the rest of the city has been plagued with a "zombie-esque" virus which turns everyone into mutants. The story follows the prototype as he attempts to rediscover his forgotten memories, and find the people responsible ... ...but the real originality of prototype comes in the use of various enhanced powers, the most important of these are the ability for the prototype to transform into any other NPC he meets, and the power to transform his arms into gigantic weapons. Basically a shape shifter, but he is also super strong, super fast and can jump super high. Gameplay wise is where i think this really cool concept gets to be a bit worrying. If you have played any of the ...

Advantages: Fast-paced gameplay, Intuitive design, Brilliant storyline, Destruction that just makes you grin Disadvantages: 3D Graphics, No Multiplayer capability
My first look at Prototype was dubious: the graphics weren't of the high standards we expect from the 3D guys and nobody was shouting "Oh My Goodness this game is amazing", but I didn't mind. I'd had experiences like this before (Fallout 3) and so I decided to buy it. Possibly the best £40 I have spent. The game is absolutely brilliant. It is a beautiful combination of mindless violence and fast-paced action. At first glance, you wouldn't expect ... ...that you as Alex Mercer receive (namely upgrades for your immense running), a skilled gamer can create an epic battle out of a few soldiers and a tank. Running up walls, picking up lorries and morphing your body into a lean-mean fighting machine is all anyone could want. Alex can change his body into a fully armour beast, equipping himself with his own Blade arm. But if that's not your thing, chuck on your mobile shield, run THROUGH cars and then ...

Advantages: Great addictive gameplay, amazing superpower element Disadvantages: Graphics is not in par with todays games
...games in the market yet Prototype is the first one to trule capture wat having superpowers in a city is all about despite a lack of source material. The game is set in New York city and you play as ALec Mercer who by some wierd chance has got DNA abosrobing superpowers. The story is not the best but it fits in nicely with the gameplay as you unlock memories and more of the back story of is origin as the game progresses. This DNA type virus which ... ...hands to shields. Watch the cinematic intro on you tube to get an idea. The player unlocks more abilities as the game progresses and its always fun to unleash these powers on the city of New York. As the game progresses areas of the city slowly get infected and hence apart from the civilians and military presence you also havea resident evil type enemies which offer variety. The missions are quite varied and lot of emphasis is put on side quests ...

comptition with the ps2 this console is know as the ultimate online multiplayer console (before the 360 came out) and was know as the the 360's prototype the xbox includes game memory storage whereas on the PS2 you need a memory card it can store music but you cant on the PS2 it can also store a list of friends so you can play with them and see what they are up to as a down side though the graphics on most games were poor and with nintendo coming back into the gaming industries with the DS and SONY with the PSP xbox really needed to pull out there finger with the XBOX360 but still no much for there eager competitors SONY with the PS3
rumors say that microsoft will be bringing a portable console out soon
