I've been a fan of Psion for a long time (at least 6 years). Starting off with a Series 3a I used it all the time and downloaded many great applications from the Internet. After a couple of years Psion brought out the Series 5 which I decided to buy.
The unit itself is slightly bigger and more of a boxy shape, but it's still nice and has a soft touch. The applications are similar to others in the range which include word processor, spreadsheet, database, clock, world time, calculator games and sound recorder. Additionally software can be downloaded from the Internet or written in OPL (similar to BASIC, if you're a programmer like myself). The unit unfolds nicely to reveal the keyboard and screen. I can't see any use for the sound recorder, but it is quite good by allowing the applications to play sound effects (ie, games).
The touchscreen was really useful and made navigation so much easier. The drawing tool, although not much practical use was quite a clever utility for playing with, or including your signature in word files, should you wish to!
I used to type quite a few assignments on the reasonably sized keyboard, however, it just wasn't quite big enough to touchtype (which is quite fortunate for me as I can't!). Still, the keys were nice and responsive.
The most useful application for me was the spreadsheet which acted just like Excel - including maths calculations and formulae as you'd expect.
Word documents could be formatted reasonably well and checked against the inbuilt dictionary. Finally, printing to either an infrared printer or via cable using the supplied PsiWin 2 software connected to a PC by cable (also supplied).
The screen was big enough to see in most conditions and the backlight incredibly useful, although it did eat batteries and made a strange buzzing sound when it was turned on. Having a power supply was almost essential. On average my batteries only lasted around 8 hours, but my Dad, who also had one managed to get around 15. This seems quite strange as he always left his turned on.
My Dad seemed to have more problems with his Psion than me. The first problem was his pen socket. The spring mechanism decided to fail and this appears to be quite common for the Series 5. After having the unit replaced the next problem occurred.
His screen looked as though the liquid crystal display had broken. Half the screen was visible and the rest did nothing. We worked out that it was probably the contacts where the hinges on the case are, and that there was probably a broken cable. Being out of the guarentee it would apparently cost £100 (I think that's right) or so just to have the screen replaced.
I didn't really use mine much at the time so then I let him use mine.
Within a few months that screen also broke! He didn't drop it, snap the hinges or anything you would expect to break the screen, but it didn't work all the same. It seems an awful lot of money to spend on replacing a screen, when you can't tell if something else is going to fail afterwards.
In the end he bought a Psion Revo and has been pleased withh this. I've had a look at it and there are a few things I don't like.
The screen isn't backlit which I find difficult to see sometimes. The keyboard is also a lot firmer than on the Series 5 which makes it harder to use. I type reasonably quickly and find it difficult with the Revo keyboard, not only because it's smaller.
The docking cradle is a good idea - the Series 5 still has the plug-in cable which has been around since the Series 3.
So anyway, he's happy and I don't have a PDA anymore. I've been considering buying another, but I'm not entirely sure what to buy.
I don't think it'd be a Revo for the reason's stated above, but the Series 5, although good, seems a lot of money for what it is. As far as I can see there are 2 alternatives - 1. A Palm device or 2. A handheld PC.
I'm not sure about either of these at the moment for both features and price. Coming back to the Series 5, whilst I had one I was very pleased with its performance and features, but for £360 it's quite expensive. I'll have to have a look at what other Ciao members think before I make my mind up on another PDA.
Advantages: lots of features, robust design, eavesdropping capabilities Disadvantages: quite big, you have to get the screen at just the right angle!!

Advantages: Reliable, fun, easy to use, expandable and compatible with many applications. Disadvantages: Thin rubber coating (purely cosmetic) may peel off in places, stylus may not stay in its holder.
...recently purchased a second hand Psion Series 5 PDA (please note, this review is of the model 'Series 5', the predecessor to the 5mx. They are similar but no the same). It cost me £75 from loot.com and I am very pleased with my purchase.

It takes a day or so to get used to, but once you do, you will realise that it is a very practical, customisable, user friendly interface to work with. The great this is that it connects to your PC and transfers and concerts files using he included 'PsiWin' software which must be installed on your PC.
The machine has so many functions that it can be used to do almost ...

The Psion Series 5mx is an ageing machine, but has still got what it takes. The hardware is much the same as the Series 5, although it has 16Mb of RAM and the processor runs at 36MHz. Don't let these puny sounding figures dissuade you from thinking that this is anything other than a portable powerhouse. It retains all the excellent hardware features of the 5, like the incredible keyboard (still the best on any palmtop), voice recorder keys, compact ... ...of the screen has taken a major hike over that of the Series 5, although it still doesn't match that of the Revo.
This machine runs an updated version of the EPOC operating system found in the Series 5. There's been some serious optimisation, and the TCP/IP (internet bits :) has undergone major surgery. There are some new applications, which fill the gaps in the original Series 5's suite. The operating system also retains it's legendary stability ...

Advantages: Excellent software, easy to back up data using software included. Disadvantages: Construction, weak hinges, coating of the case soon wears off.
I bought my Psion Series 5 after been very satisfied with a 3a which I had owned since 1996. The screen on the Series 5 is not as clear as the 3a, and contrast needs to be adjusted carefully for each programme to get the best view. the backlight feature doesn't really help, and it uses a lot more power.
Within a few months the coating on the outside of the case started peeling off, even though I keep the Series 5 in a leather case.
The built in ... ...Backing up is easy and the Psion software is easy to use and reliable.
Not as well constructed as the 3a, but easier to enter data using the keyboard, and it is also larger and heavier. It does fit into an inside jacket pocket though! ...

Advantages: excellent tools for the busy businessman and entrepreneur or for students Disadvantages: Monochromatic screen
Psion has in its Series 5 of palmtops an excellent range of products. There are basically three different types of Psion Series 5 palmtops (when you exclude the simpler REVOs), the original granite black coloured model, the special edition metallic green one and the more recent 5MX. There are very few differences other than aesthetical from the black to the green model; they share the same hardware specifications although the attractive green special ... ...models are equipped with. Psion palmtops are excellent tools for the busy businessman and entrepreneur or for students who cannot afford a computer. It comes with software within its EPOC operating system - word processing, spreadsheet, agenda, etc. If you own a mobile phone with infrared communication interface you can link up you Psion and surf the web, check email etc. Mind you the screen is monochromatic, so it’s a pretty basic Internet experience. ...

Advantages: Small size, light, type rather than scribble, screen, software, looks Disadvantages: Bigger than Palm V, no backlight
For those of you who like the handheld format (rather use a keyboard than scribble on the screen), Psion has always been a class leader. Windows CE just doesn't match the elegance of Psion's EPOC32 operating system. The PsionSeries5mx has been the one to beat.
Psion's Revo is in some ways better (the screen quality is much better). It's a Series5mx shrunk to a much more convenient form-factor. It's only 200g in weight (not much heavier than my PalmPilot) and yet still manages to include a 'proper' keyboard, i.e. one that feels good to use and is almost touch-type friendly!
The whole theme is much more aimed at the Organiser functionality. Bear in mind that you can customise the views. My favourite is to split the Day view so that my To Do Items are on the left and the Appointments are on the right.

After have read reviews on the HP1000 photosmart printer I decided that I would invest in the newer HP1218 photosmart printer. As before Hewlett Packard have produced a printer of excellent quality for both text and photographs. The printer can be used as a standalone printer not requiring a PC to operate it, two slots on the side of the printer allow both compact flash and smartmedia cards to be inserted straight from the digital cameras. An easy to view and use LCD panel allows the user to select the size of print required then at the touch of one button your prints appear beautifully printed and dry on photopaper. The printer also has an infrared port to allow connection to PDA's (Palm etc) , Laptops and certain mobile phones (Nokia 7110 works). The printer however does not seem to connect with PsionSeries5mx devices using IR (at least ...
Advantages: Very sexy, small, powerful. Disadvantages: Keyboard a bit on the small side.
What's so exciting, you ask? Just look at the picture -- this Psion is actually smaller and is, in my opinion, the coolest looking PDA around, bar none. I mean, look at the dark blue casing accented in silver -- a sexier machine you will not find!
This product is being marketed by Psion to go directly against Palm Computing Inc's Palm V. In fact, the Psion is actually only slightly bigger than the Palm V, and fits in your pocket quite easily.
Blue meanie
About the size of a spectacle case but thinner, the Psion just exudes class and style.
Apart from the nice external design and casing, another interesting thing about the Psion Revo is that it has an ingenious slide-out keyboard that is even more impressive than the one on the PsionSeries5mx - as you open it, the keyboard slides out and creates an arched base which angles ...
