I bought my Psion Series 5 after been very satisfied with a 3a which I had owned since 1996.
The screen on the Series 5 is not as clear as the 3a, and contrast needs to be adjusted carefully for each programme to get the best view. the backlight feature doesn't really help, and it uses a lot more power.
Within a few months the coating on the outside of the case started peeling off, even though I keep the Series 5 in a leather case.
The built in applications are excellent, and there a number of third party applications which can be purchased or downloaded from the internet. I am using the following additional software:
1. RMR fuel - enter the price paid and the number of litres and work out mpg. 2. Palmtop Route Planner (on CD) Excellent software covering a number of European countries. You enter your starting point and destination and wait a while .. .. .. and the route is shown as a map and/or a chart. I live in s small town with about 10,000 population, and the programme asks me if I would like to start from the town centre or the station! Larger towns have even more possible dtarting points.
The construction of the case is not too good, and the hinges in particular are rather prone to damage. The plastic cracked around the left hinge and eventually broke, so I sent the Series 5 for repair. This cost £100 as apparantly the screen had to be replaced. It also came back with a new black case which seems to be a little more durable than the first one, although there are a few places where the coating is starting to wear away.
Battery life is not good. the new replacement batteries fitted after the repair (Duracell Ultra) lasted just 5 hours. Ordinary Duracell seem to last longer and 7 to 8 hours seems to be the average.
Backing up is easy and the Psion software is easy to use and reliable.
Not as well constructed as the 3a, but easier to enter data using the keyboard, and it is also larger and heavier. It does fit into an inside jacket pocket though!

Advantages: Reliable, fun, easy to use, expandable and compatible with many applications. Disadvantages: Thin rubber coating (purely cosmetic) may peel off in places, stylus may not stay in its holder.
