Purasia, as you would probably guess, is a range of packet sauces that allow you create Asian (Chinese, Thai and Indian) meals in your own home, in 3 easy steps. They produce 6 type of sauces at the moment, 2 of each cuisine.
Chinese - Black Bean and Szechuan Indian - Royal Korma and Tikka Masalla Thai - Green and Red Curry
My review is of the Purasia Black Bean mix but the rest of the range work in exactly the same way.
The packaging is eye catching, with cut-out sections on the front of the cardboard box that gives a tantalizing glimpse of what you are actually buying.....an attractive plate of food is featured, along with the details that many of you will be wanting to know already - the nutritional details (see the end of the review!), how many it serves (3) and what it actually is - a trio of spices, oils and pastes for Black bean sauce.
The back of the packaging details the contents:
Ginger & Chilli aromatic oil; Onion, garlic, ginger and chilli paste; and Black bean stir-fry paste
The additional requirements - 2 chicken breasts, stir-fry vegetables - it suggests mushrooms, green peppers and spring onions -but you could use whatever you choose.
Then comes the three step guide to preparing your black bean dish:
Prepare the chicken and spring onions, slice the onions, peppers and mushrooms. Heat your pan and add the contents of packet 1 - the ginger and chilli oil (17ml of sunflower oil, ginger extract, chilli extract and rosemary)
Add the contents of packet 2 - the onion, garlic, ginger and chilli paste (80g of roasted onion, roasted onion paste, sunflower oil, garlic, ginger, water, chilli paste and lemon juice concentrate). Add the chicken pieces and cook through before adding the vegetables until they begin softening.
Lastly, add the black bean sauce (100g of Water, sugar, lime juice, fermented black bean, soy sauce, sherry, sunflower oil, cornflour and sesame oil). Allow to coat the chicken and vegetables and simmer gently - now enjoy!
Following the steps I found easy, nothing too arduous there at all. I followed it and used chicken but you could use beef, pork, tofu or simply vegetables - the Purasia pack is perfect for vegetarians. I chose to serve with freshly made egg noodles (by myself, of course). The taste and consistency of the end product is actually quite authentic - and not too 'gloopy' like so many ready made sauces. If it does go too gloopy, it's probably going to be due to over-cooking, so simply add a splash of water to thin the sauce.
At £3.29 a pack, it's a relatively expensive way of making a Black Bean stir-fry when you add in the cost of the chicken/meat and vegetables. But, if you can't be bothered to peel and dice the onions, prepare the vegetables, chop the chilli, crush the garlic and find the black beans, it's a bargain - great taste, great consistency and an authentic meal in 20-30 minutes.
