Full review

As Christmas approaches, it is quite likely that Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) radios will once again be a very popular present. Last year I was given a Pure Evoke 1 radio and in the twelve months that I have owned it, I have been very impressed indeed.

Appearance
----------------

The Pure Evoke1 radio is 210mmx175mmx110mm and is encased in wood veneer. It has a silver coloured metal handle and it's front, which contains the controls and single speaker, is also silver in colour. The speaker is on the left hand side of the unit and the controls take the form of a channel select knob and a volume knob. The screen is a two row dot-matrix screen which has a green backlight and dark text. The unit is mains powered with no option of battery only use. There are ten buttons which control tuning, autotuning, display contents as well as six pre-set buttons to store channels. There is also an on on/off button. It is a very well designed a nd good looking unit that blends in well in any part of the house. Although users are somewhat limited to being within range of a mains socket, the unit does not look out of place anywhere.

Use
------

The unit is very easy to use. The first, and most obvious thing is that the aerial needs to be extended. When switched on, the unit warms up for about 5 seconds while it searches for all available channels. Once it has found all stations, the unit will play one at random at first. By pressing the tuning button in and then rotating it, you can then scroll through all the channels the unit has found and still listen to the original channel. Once you have found the required channel, you press the button in and the radio tunes in to that channel. It really is that simple. The unit does not have an FM tuner and so you are only able to access the DAB stations but this is no hinderance as there are loads.

Sound Quality
--------------------

Although quite small, the unit is relatively heavy and as a result, the sound quality is quite 'meaty' and the unit is just as comfortable pumping out the shipping forecast as it is playing Rock music. There is only one speaker and so any output is in mono. This can be altered by buying an optional second speaker which plugs directly into the unit. This costs about thirty pounds. One of the main selling points of DAB radio is that it is so much clearer than standard FM. Well it most certainly is but this is reliant on the signal strength being good enough. If your radio is in a weak reception area for a particular station then the radio 'gurgles'. It is advisable to check your postcode on the DAB website to chack availability but most of the UK is pretty well covered.

Conclusion
----------------

Pure offer a wide range of DAB radios and the Pure Evoke 1 was one of their first. Since it's release well over a year ago, several models have superceded the Evoke 1 and they are a mixture of mono, stereo and portable units. As a result, it's RRP has gone down from around 100 to the 65-70 pound mark, as long as you do plenty of research. Lots of other manufacturers now produce DAB radios and they are likely to sell very well this year. I have only really tried the more modern models in shops and from what I can see, the main difference lies in the quality of the display screen and the fact that some now offer a greater degree of portability due to not being solely powered by 240V mains. The clarity of a DAB radio in an area offering strong reception is incredible and although there are many cheaper models on the market, what is the point of having DAB if your radio does not have a good quality speaker? The Pure Evoke 1 does and if you don't mind paying a little less, to the detriment of a better looking display and the option of battery power, it would be a very good additon to any home.

Advantages: Access To Digital Only Stations, Clear Reception, Looks Very Nice
Disadvantages: Single Speaker, Expensive, Only 6 Presets.

I bought this radio on a whim. I saw it in my local argos for just under £100 and decided there and then I was going to give it a go. Im whats known as an early adopter, Someone who jumps on new technology almost as soon as its released. When I opened the box I was very surprised by the quality of the radio, The wooden case felt strong and looked great. It has a curved silver metal handle on the top but to be honest as the radio is mains powered ...

PURE quality
Review of Pure Digital Evoke 1 by richp80

Advantages: static free radio, easy to tune
Disadvantages: purely mains powered, not too many stations YET!!

...went out and bought a PURE Evoke-1 DAB digital radio for £90 from DABS. Now you may very well be thinking that this sound like an awful amount of money to pay for such a comodity but once you hear the static free tunes blasting out whilst relaxing on the sofa you find that its well worth it. I would only reccommend this to people that listen to a lot of radio !! The appearance makes it look like a radio from years ago but somehow it works and manages ...
...As soon as you switch it on the machine scans the available stations and they are then at your desposal at the turn and push of a dial, the info regarding the station then popping up in the two line LCD screen. Its that easy to use you may as well throw away the instructions could i have never used them!!!! What about the sound quality?? The quality overall is good, though you dont get stereo sound, unless you buy the Evoke-2 for and extra £30 or ... Read review

Pure Evoke outstrips some other models
Review of Pure Digital Evoke 1 by sd00

Advantages: Very good reception
Disadvantages: Price?

...at best "may receive" the Pure Evoke is streets ahead of the other digitial radios in the house (a Pure Elan, a Sony). In Winchester which is where we were before here and where digital reception was much stronger there was far less to choose between the radios. The radio feels well built with a solid feel to the handle and case. The push buttons are positive if a little on the small side; you have to be accurate when pressing them. Tuning is ... Crisp, clear music at last
Review of Pure Digital Evoke 1 by Minesweeper

Advantages: Brilliant sound quality and looks very stylish
Disadvantages: Expensive and always has a trailing lead as no batteries

We bought our Pure Evoke digital radio after finally getting totally fed up of tuning analogue radios and never getting a really good signal. What a revalation! The sound quality is superb and it is child's play to set stations and flip between them. Added to which, it looks very good on my kitchen window sill. Of course, frankly you'd expect nothing less at this sort of price. This definitely is not the cheap option. In fact, it is ridiculously ...
...facility. Also, at the moment the range of stations available is surprisingly limited (19 where we live, although it varies from area to area), with no ability to pick up local stations in our area. The one thing I would most like to change about it is that it has to be plugged in (with a pretty hefty transformer) and doesn't have batteries. This rather limits its portability as there's always a trailing cable. It does have a USB connection and ... Read review

Good on the ears hard on the pocket!
Review of Pure Digital Evoke 1 by hymerB644

Advantages: Great reception
Disadvantages: Expensive to buy and poor service from Pure

We have enjoyed our Evoke digital radio, the reception is very good and the display is fun. Unfortunately this display stopped working withing the warranty so I contacted Evoke. They told me that if I returned the radio they would replace it. Naturally I sent it 'recorded delivery' so I would know when they received it. After a week I contacted them and asked where the replacement might be, the response was that they had not yet looked at my radio! ...
...started to get really agitated after a month that they agreed to send a replacement. I then had another several weeks of hassle trying to get the return postage costs reimbursed. I'm not sure it is worth the extra money, there are cheaper digital radios on the market. If we need another it will not be an Evoke! ... Read review

Pure Evoke-1 XT
Review of Pure Digital EVOKE1XT by  owen080808

Advantages: Small, compact, good sound and quality
Disadvantages: No batteries, mildly expensive

...-Pure Digital Evoke-1XT Digital Audio Broadcasting Digital Radio- This is a small, compact DAB only digital radio, It is available in either cherry (slightly darker) or beech (lighter) wooden finishes and has an attractive blue back lit display. Sound of a radio is all important, because what you want to do is listen to it! This little beauty doesn't dissapoint, good things really can come in small packages. It's around half the size of a shoe-box, but delivers quality full sounding music, be it radio 1 on a Saturday night or smooth classical music to send you to sleep you will be impressed with the sound so much you'll wonder why you kept that old analogue ghetto blaster/clock radio for so long. Features: Retractable aerial Headphone, Stereo Out and Aux speaker ports on the rear USB connection for firmware upgrade Volume... Read review

A great enhancement to the washing up
Review of Pure Digital EVOKE1XT by  storino

Advantages: sound quality, ease of use, looks
Disadvantages: black power cable, not truly portable

...I asked my husband for a radio for Christmas 2004, because I?ve recently started spending a lot of time in the kitchen having become a fulltime housewife, and was going quietly mad without something to listen to (I have the attention span of a gnat). I asked for something cheap and cheerful, knowing that he wouldn?t be able to resist buying a DAB digital radio anyway. He bought me a Pure EVOKE 1XT from our local John Lewis, I think he paid around £90, and I?m delighted with it. The radio itself looks great with a pale fascia and cherry wood case (maple is also available), plus the white on blue display is really bright and easy to read. From reading the instructions before switching it on I thought it might be a bit complicated to tune, but I would recommend ignoring the instructions and just switching it on, because it does... As pure as the virgin mary.
Review of Pure Digital EVOKE1XT by  dj_Decopod

Advantages: More stations and better sound
Disadvantages: No sleep timer, not truly portable.

...All your favourite music on a new station! fantastic! That's right folks, only on DAB digital radio! Noooo! If like me you've had to endure all the advertising for radio stations that you would love to listen to, but had no access to a digital radio, then you will understand how frustrating it could be. That's all changed now though as for my last birthday I was presented with a toolkit, cufflinks, vouchers for HMV and...oh what's this...a new Pure Evoke 1 digital radio! Finally I get to listen to 1xtra, BBC6, Xfm and many more all from my humble abode deep in rural Herefordshire. Reception is...great, depending on where you have your radio. I was under the impression that I wouldn't get much signal where I live, but with the aerial fully extended and the raio placed in a prime position, I could pick up all the BBC stations and many...
