Break-up of the Level 42 Family

Advantages: Level 42 at their most commercially accessible.
Disadvantages: Level 42 at their most commercially accessible.

INTRODUCTION The effect that music has on a listener can be informed by many things, such as mood, emotional context, state of mind and ties to a person or place. The funky jazz band you listen to live on an evening out at Ronnie Scott?s just doesn?t sound the same when reproduced on CD and played in your living room. Similarly, if you?d never kissed your girl for the first time to the sax-imbued strains of ?Careless Whisper?, chances are the song would not mean as much to you. And so it was that Level 42?s ?Running in the Family? provided the soundtrack for an extraordinary experience that is now indelibly etched in my memory and forever linked with the album that accompanied it. In July 1987, still wet behind the ears, I set out with twenty other young Armenian-Americans from New York and New Jersey, on a two week tour of our ...

Review of Running In The Family - Level 42

A welcome return of Level 42!

Advantages: Very catchy, great to hear from them again
Disadvantages: May be too much of the same thing for some people

I have always loved the musical style of Level 42. Although I wasn't born when the band was formed, and I didn't really take an interest in them until nearly twenty years later, I can't help but love the feel-good quality to each track - and of course, Mark King's superb signature slap-bass style. I don't know how they do it, but I always feel great whenever I listen to them! It's not just me either - Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer once described the feeling you get from listening to them as "the [great] feeling you get listening to Level 42 on a summer's day". Anyway, enough about me, let's talk about this album. Retroglide is the first album release from Level 42 in twelve years (apart from greatest hits etc) and was released on 18th September 2006. ~~ The Case ~~ I know what you're thinking, "why is she reviewing a CD case ...

Review of Level 42 - Retroglide

Not as high as a 42

Advantages: fair drink prices, vending machine, very clean
Disadvantages: samey music, can get quite busy, not enough seating

I used to be totally into the Indie scene but now Ive been more influenced into rock but a friend asked if I wanted to go to 42nd Street and I had always heard good things so I decided to head on down. Its situated on bootle St in deansgate just off the main road. The entrance is plainly just a door with the flatboars sign with the 42nd street logo so if you didnt know what youwas looking for it could be pretty hard to find. The club is upstairs of the building so there are a few stairs and therefore not really suitable for those in a wheelchair or difficulties with climbing stairs such as crutches. The entrance fee wasn't that bad, I paid £4 after 10:30pm with an NUS card which is about the same as 5th Avenue and other clubs. The dancefloor is located in the middle of the room between two bars and lit up with UV lights and some disco so ...
