Penhale petrol station has a lot of plus points, offering a large selection of amenities, for all occasions. Having said that, there are also some bad points associated with this site but all will be revealed . . .
There are 8 pumps at this site, all with Unleaded and Diesel as you would expect. The pumps are fairly wide so two cars can get to their adjacent pumps with ease, without the worry of taking someone's door off. There are also sand buckets situated at each pump with paper towels and plastic gloves in the event you should wish to use.
There is a toilet on the side of the site, though to use you need to get a key from the cashier as it is locked unless used. They always say you can judge a restaurant by the toilets and if that is the case with petrol stations too, then the verdict wouldn't be great! Yes it has the bare minimum required but the cleanliness, graffiti and general state of the toilet is less than desirable, however serves its purpose.
The Jet garage boosts a recently upgraded Car wash as well as a state of the art Jet wash, do it yourself jobbie which is probably more effective than the car wash, though a lot more hassle. There is a car vacuum, air for the tyres and water too to top up the car if required.
There is a cash machine located next to the garage on McDonald's site but literally 20 seconds walk from the pumps. There are several parking spaces around the garage which is extremely convenient when not requiring petrol, instead just needing to put in the shop for something. Again this saves times especially in peak season when everywhere in Cornwall is rammed! In Penhale Garage's defence, due to the site being 7 miles out of Newquay, you tend to miss the worst of the tourist traffic and don't usually have to queue for long.
Located in the store the following products / services are on offer:
- Coffee Machine - selection of Coffee, tea, hot chocolate and soup to takeaway at fairly decent prices, around £1 for a coffee. This is usually a hit for the lorry drivers/ peeps on the road who need a quick pick me up. - A large selection of Alcohol is on sale, most important plus point to point out would be the fact you buy alcohol 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the only place in a 15 mile radius. Drinks include wine, beer, spirits and alco pops to name a few. - A good selection of Cornish produce / souvenirs, all a bit cheesy and some could say tacky but guaranteed to be able to hunt a good find, whether it be a calorie packed box of Cornish fudge or some original Scrumpy Cider. - DVD's and CD's are on sale too but don't expect the Top 20 to be there, they are more your classic driving albums such as Erasure and Robbie Williams. There are also a good selection of cards, board games and things to do whether it's to take back to your caravan or to pass the time on the car journey home. - As any petrol station, you will see a large choice of drinks and confectionary as well as your usually bits and bobs such as your soups and sauces, milk and cheese, sandwiches, sausage rolls and even ready meals that only required 6 or 8 minutes in the microwave. - You can even purchase products for the car, whether it be de-icer or oil, bulbs or air fresheners, they have it all as well as jump leads and maps to make that journey a little bit easier.
All in all, there is a lot on offer at this particular Jet Garage. As anywhere there are bad points too. Such as, the service doesn't usually come with a smile, especially if you catch then on the grave yard shift, between 11pm and 7am, but one good thing is that you can go in the shop 24 hours a day, so you don't have to experience being served at the window which makes a nice change. The staff can sometimes be short (and I don't mean in height) which makes you feel a little under valued as a regular customer. They do however serve promptly which save you getting wound up queuing.
Apart from the car wash facilities, the shop is far from modern and could certainly do with a lick of paint but overall offers a convenient service which doesn't cost the earth. All prices are generally competitive with the local supermarkets and it being open 24 hours is a big thing in Cornwall. If you aren't bothered about being offered great customer service then I am sure your visit to this garage will cover all your needs.
