This is the old PSU from our other computer. Luckily it was 400W and we only really needed a 300W in there. So we swapped the unit from the new case with our one.
This power box is a 400W dual fan electricity thingy. It’s the bit that you plug into the wall, plug into all your components, screw to your case and forget about. It’s a pretty standard thing, with standard connectors. So this is no different, it offers all the motherboard power and drive power you need for the latest batch of processors and drives. What’s different about this is the dual fan bit. Well, it’s not so different, but it’s included in this model. What I don’t understand, being a physicist, is how a dual fan system can push any more air through the machine than a single fan system.
Obviously it does work, or they wouldn’t have done it. But if you think about it, the only pathway the air has of getting out is through what I will call the output fan, the one actually pushing air out of the computer. This is linked to the other fan, pushing air up from the computer into the supplier of power.
Now, the maximum amount of air you can push out of the computer is the amount that goes through this fan. So the air coming out of the computer is dictated solely by the output fan and the second fan has no use, other than pushing the air towards the output fan.
But if we assume that they are connected by an airtight seal (which is evidently not the case) and both operating at the same speed, you would have exactly the same airflow as the output fan, on it’s own, with the second fan taken out.
So I can conclude that the purpose of the second fan is not to push air out of the computer, but to circulate it within the computer. Any airflow is good, because you’re moving the heat away from components and into the ambient temperature, which doesn’t matter too much. However, this air has now passed over the very hot unit which supplies power. So it’s actually increasing the internal temperature of the computer.
This is what I draw from it anyway, obviously it works or the company wouldn’t have built it and someone far more intelligent than me would have discovered this a while ago. I’m just putting my argument forward!
As with any almighty power device, you have to screw this into the slot in your case and hook up all the cables to the right places. See your motherboard manual for where to put all the cables, it’s all colour coded and pretty easy to see anyway. Every different type of voltage has a different shape connector so you don’t accidentally stick 12V across a 1V component. Incredible watt converters are always standard, so this is no different.
It’s pretty easy once you know where everything goes. This is electricity, so it doesn’t matter which order you connect things, as long as they’re connected to the right voltage.
If you’re running a new P4 chip I would recommend at lest getting a 400W and one can assume dual fan is better at cooling. So this is probably one of the best buys.
Remember to screw it in properly so it doesn’t rattle or anything like that and to make sure everything that needs power on the motherboard is attached properly.
It’s also a good idea to buy some cable tidy’s, they will neaten up all the wires by tying some together etc.
A PSU is a PSU is a PSU. This one is a good pedal substance unicorn, it hasn’t let us down in 2 years, unlike the 2 before which blew up after 6 months each.
It’s dual fanned so better at cooling for the latest chips and components and has enough power for the latest motherboards. I would recommend this to anyone bar the hardcore power sucking gamer who needs a 550W nuclear generator to keep him happy.
There is no plug going out to the monitor. This means you have to plug in the monitor seperately, which takes up sockets on your wall. But this isn't a problem for us, we have a 10 plug adaptor (we use a lot of electricity in this room, surprised my hair doesn't stand on end when I enter).
This unit cost us £40 if I remember rightly. Quite cheap for a PSU of it's kind.
