Q is one of the biggest-selling monthly music magazines on the market. It's been around for ages now and its popularity endures. I've been a reader on and off for about 8 years, and I can say that this month's edition is one of the best I've bought.
Q's writers are clued-up and funny. You can tell that they just love music - not just the latest 'must have' music, but music that's good whatever its genre. Sure, the writers can sometimes be arrogant, sometimes be sneering, and sometimes they get things mighty wrong (I always remember their damning 'it'll get nowhere' review of Oasis' What's the Story), but they make up for it with quality journalism, great in-depth interviews, hilarious mickey-takes and a slick professional style.
Though there are several pages of the usual latest/reissue music, book, TV and film reviews, this month's issue is basically a review of 2001.
We get the poll of '100 women who rock your world' as voted by Q's readers, where PJ Harvey gets the big gong with Madonna second and Kate Bush third. Along with this are interviews with PJH, Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani and Kate Bush, and articles on Madonna and Courtney Love (all in the top 100).
There's also a rundown of Q's reviewers 50 best albums of the year, with - surprise, surprise - Ryan Adams' 'Gold' taking the top spot, and Stereophonics, Basement Jaxx, the Strokes, REM and Starsailor to name but a few bringing up the rear.
Elsewhere there's a great Q&A with Lenny Kravitz, with questions (such as 'Why don't you ever wear socks?') asked by readers.
There's a 5 minute chat with Dido (who won't be sending Eminem a Christmas card), Sheryl Crow in the studio, Pulp in prison, Tim Burgess in a fright-anorak and much, much more.
I've saved the best til last, as this month's edition has a free CD containing Q's pick of the year, 19 (mostly) cracking tracks by some quality artists including the Strokes, the Charlatans, Ryan Adams, Gorillaz, Ash, Daft Punk and even Outkast.

...This is where Q magazine comes in. On the face of it this would be exactly right for me, a mature look at music that isn’t bothered about Will Young, Steps and the meaningless con game that has now become the top forty singles chart… but something is not quite right with the world of Q… Q

All the information is given, chart position, how many weeks, highest chart position as well as how many albums in total have been sold. Some of the records featuring in the chart have a little feature attached giving some relevant interesting information about it. Often humorous chart compilations are also included ...

Advantages: The album reviews - an essential read (and free CD this month). Disadvantages: Music news a bit out of date...
Q Magazine must be one of the most easily recognizable publications around, with its big white Q on a red background in the top left corner. From its launch back in 1986 there has been 197 issues and it has now become Britains biggest music magazine. Over the years its journalistic style has changed, some times to keep in line with current trends and also to appeal to a wider audience. It has recently undergone a minor facelift in an attempt to make ... ...picking up a copy of Q the front cover gives you a good idea of the features and interviews inside this month - or if a major artist has released a new album it'll tell you here. The spine of the magazine lists more details of the contents and a bizarre "spine message" - this is a cryptic clue which only smartarses seem to understand (no - I haven't solved one of them yet!)
Over the years the basic format of the magazine has not altered, although ...

Q is the only music magazine I ever buy. That's because its the best of the lot. Not only does it mix great opinions, features, top interviews and comments, but it comes at a very affordable £3, considering you get a generally very good CD with it.
Q's best feature is its interviews. This month, there is a 20 page Radiohead special including an interview with Thom Yorke, and interviews with Dido, Gorillaz and Slipknot (evidently one of them likes ... ...so, the best of the Q awards. Thirdly, the reviews, There is 20 pages of reviews of all kinds of artists, from Tim McGraw to Roxy Music. ANother review section is devoted to live acts. There's also reviews of films and DVDs. There are plenty of adverts, but these aren't actually that annoying - all about music, and thats what you buy the mag for isn't it? Then there's the other features. There is a bit of a shift backwards, to the oldies of the 60s/70s/80s, ...

Advantages: 200+ LP reviews every months Disadvantages: Biased towards certain artists and genres
Q was founded in 1986 to match the existing monthly glossies, Vox and Select, and to provide a grown up alternative to Smash Hits.
Here is a breakdown of items and regular features in a typical issue of Q. I have rated each aspect out of 5.

Advantages: Everythin' Disadvantages: Ads and annoying singing advert people
I'm sure of it. Missy Elliot and Britney Spears are atteampting a world takeover bid. These two are going to infect our charts. How? MTV. And what backup do we have? MTV 2 (the alternative channel) and Q tv channel.
Q plays the best in real rock. For heavy-metal-slash-manic-punk-music you have Kerrang channel, which is mostly crappy goth music (Hi Marilyn, you softie...) and for true wierdness you have MTV2. I like MTV2 a lot, not because I am wierd, but I try not to be a 'clone' of everyone else. I walk round town / school / anywhere and all I meet are the same clones. Talking about hip hop or grunge. They think they are superbalist because they don't listen to pop music. They listen to the next worst thing: hip hop. Hip hop is even more over-produced than pop sometimes. Do you really reckon that Dr Dre and his 'cru' are going to go ...

Ciao members have rated this review on average: very helpful Review of Channel Q
The channel Q is a much needed alternative to the MTV channels. Not only is this channel almost pop-free, but it also brings some almost forgotten sounds of the past. There are songs for everybodys taste from Elvis to Metallica. It is not just Heavy Metal as some viewers thought at the launch of Q a few months ago.
Apart from some very good oldies they also play current releases like "Imitation of Life" by REM or "I want you Bad" by Offspring. They do have their fair bit of adverts in between and some annoying people who dance around, while the viewer has to guess to what song they dance, but apart from that it is just pure music.
The system is similar to that of "The Box", you have to phone in and select a song that you like and a few hours later they might bring it, although the choice is not as big as The Box is offering, but you ...
