TheQuakeseries has always been a schizophrenic one, with the odd numbered games being ... more
primarily multiplayer affairs and the even numbered ones being focused on single player with very little connection between the two. As maths fans will have already realised that means thatQuake 4picks up from the ending ofQuake IIand once again chronicles the battle between humanity and the alien Strogg.Although it is not developed by Id Software themselves, but bySoldier of Fortunecreators Raven Software,Quake 4does use theDoom 3graphics engine. In fact if theres one early criticism of the game it is that it looks altogether too much likeDoom 3, with very similar art design and darkened levels - and little of the orange hues and angular architecture ofQuake II.In gameplay terms an early plot twist has you being captured by the Strogg and assimilated as one of their nasty looking cyborgs. The process is interrupted just before the end though, allowing you to retain your human mind (phew!) and yet also make use of various new superpowers, which, along with your weapons, can also be upgraded as the game goes on.With some pilotable weapons, including a nifty looking mech, this looks set to be an explosive, if unoriginal, first person shoot em-up. The nature of the multiplayer mode has yet to be revealed but fans will certainly be interested in the multiplayer only spin-offEnemy Territory: Quake Wars, which if anything looks even better than this. --Harrison DentThis preview is based on an incomplete version of the game; features or problems mentioned above may not appear in the finished game.

To defeat the enemy this time you have to become one of them, one of those handsome looking , Strogg freaks that is. Oh yeah this outime from ID Software has more action this time around than you would find loitering on a street corner. Is getting on a bit now, but the game has not lost any of its appeal and fast paced addictive insane shooting gameplay style, the game is colourful the graphics great for its time, sound is bang on, this aint no walk in the park either so prepare yourself for a decent battle. This time you do have a light on the weapons so oyu can see in dark corners, and you will get to see your legs cut off.
Advantages: decent single player mode Disadvantages: online multiplayer is somewhat lacking
the game you'll be one tooled up bad ass, but that's not enough to save you from getting captured by the Strogg and getting rebuilt in their image. Luckily you're rescued before they implant the chip that puts you under their influence. The good news is that although you're now more machine than man you have the ability to access all the Stroggs equipment. And you'll need these extra abilities if you're to survive the mission to destroy the Strogg once and for all.
Thanks to the Xbox 360s additional power QuakeIV easily matches the PC version of the games on the graphics front. The Doom 3 engine is used to much better effect than it was on the original Xbox, with a much smoother framrate and a lot more going on onscreen. Everything looks great too with well detailed character models and scenery, lighting effects are outstanding too ...
Advantages: RPG elements Disadvantages: The multiplayer function of the game has to be downloaded separately
OK, Here are the PC shoot 'em ups in order of excellency:-
At number 5 we have Quake 3 Arena
At number 4 we have Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force
At number 3 we have Unreal Tournament
At number 2 we have Half-Life
But the undoubtable number 1 is DEUS EX
Doesn't this indicate to you just how good
DEUS EX actually is?
It is hard to say otherwise but Deus Ex is the
most original and most well designed shoot 'em
up of them all. It also contains RPG elements.
The storyline behind Deus Ex could not be more
engrossing. You will also see some of the smartest
weapons any of these games have ever had. ...
