Won't make the earth move

Advantages: Chapters flow nicely, three seperate stories linking at the end, some good characters
Disadvantages: Needless dialogue, unlikely scenarios, poor ending

...
Published in 1994, Quake is a half-horror, half-action novel set in Los Angeles prior to a huge earthquake. When the earthquake arrives, it is massively destructive - it's force is felt for many miles around. The "Quake" brings chaos to much of the city, and the novel involves three seperate stories that in some way focus on a member of the Banner family - husband, wife and daughter all have a battle on their hands to survive the ...
...of events (for Sheila), the quake pulls down her house. Whilst it is falling down around her, she just happens to be naked and jumps into the bathtub to avoid the worst of the debris. She survives relatively unscathed, though unfortunately for her, she is pinned down by a couple of huge beams. Stanley meanwhile finds that that the earthquake is the catylist for his own insanity, and now that Sheila is where he wants her, he will stop at nothing to ... more

A Great Horror Novel With a Point on Human Nature

Advantages: A great read, will leave you wanting more when you finish it
Disadvantages: I can't think of any!

...quality book by Richard Laymon, Quake tells the story of a family who are seperated in differant parts of LA, and their stories of finding their way home. The book is written in three differant parts which are all happening simultaneously, with one chapter being dedicated to one part of the story, the next the other, and so forth. One part concerns a man named Stanley, who is obsessed with his neighbour, Sheila. When the Quake hits, Sheila is trapped ...
...major problem is not the Quake it's self, but rather what the Quake has done to the people of Los Angeles. The Quake has practically taken away all the rules, people are looting, stealing, killing, and raping. To me personally, this is more than your ordinary horror novel, this is a book which makes a point about the people of today. As soon as people think they can get away with doing what they desire, they turn on one another, and they do anything ...

Horror meets disaster movie!

Advantages: A good solid entertaining read.
Disadvantages: Perhaps lacking in flair.

...characters from the moment the quake hits. However this is not your run of the mill disaster novel - the 'Quake' of the title refers not just to the earthquake, but to quaking with fear, since in Laymon's novels there are always a variety of nasty characters hanging around! Laymon juggles the various plot strands skillfully - it is always clear that the individual characters are going to come together at some point, but never obvious exactly how. ...

quake

Advantages: just a really good story
Disadvantages: none

hopefully this will turn out to be more than a blank page this time. Why does this keep happening to me? Anyway, about the book. This story doesn't have you on the edge of your seat the way some of Laymons really good stuff but, nevertheless, it's a good book with a decent story. I won't give too much of the plot away, in case it spoils it for anyone. This story is set in the aftermath of a huge earthquake in Los Angeles. The book cleverly tells ...
...What I like about this book is it's plausible. These things could really happen. It shows how 'normal' people can go out of control when law and order are out of the window. Like I said, not on the edge of your seat, can't put it down kind of stuff. But just a good story. ...
