Quantum Tape library drive module 400 GB 800 GB

...Freecom before as they've always looked a bit cheap and nasty so this would be an interesting experience. The box did feel reassuringly heavy though, a good start. ############### # What's in the Box? ############### Apart from the drive, the box contained a small light external PSU, a USB lead and a CD with some backup software. The case is made of extremly solid and heavy aluminium with a silver plastic front piece with a sexy blue '400GB' light (yes, you can have sexy lights. Really.) at the front just to prove how big it was. The finish is excellent and I have to say, if this is anything to go by, I'm converted to Freecom. Unlike the picture here, my unit has the aluminium finished in matt black which looks really nice on top of my black PC. It's also surprisingly compact - not that much bigger than a hard drive at 20x11.5x4 cms... Read review

Advantages: Big and FAST

...This is the second Lacie drive I've purchased, the former being a 120Gb d2 drive. This newer 400Gb drive features USB2 and firewire 400/800 connections allowing for connection to the more standard newer interfaces. I use a firewire 400 connection. After looking at all the similar disks of different sizes, this model seemed the best for the price per Gig.....and this disk is fast! I use it on a windows 2K box, and it performs very well, and has not even been turned off for about 3 months. 3D animations stream off this incredibly fast, and the bottleneck if any would appear to be how fat the actual computer can deal with the data. I havent tested it, but I've heard that firewire 800 can be very cpu intensive....always best to get a good quality interface card to try and offload work from the main CPU. Lacie do bigger disks... ...I bought this for our office server which before-hand was running a DDS5 tape drive. I have to say the DDS5 backup system we had was excellent and never caused me any problems. We got to a point where we needed two tapes to do a backup, and considering we keep backups for up to a month, thats a hell of a lot more tapes we would have to buy. After a lot of research and learning about DLT and SDLT, we discovered the V160. DLT allows backups to 40GB (80GB Compressed) and SDLT is alot more (i forget the figures). DLT would not have been enough and SDLT is a hell of a lot more expensive. Quantums V160 is right in the middle of the two and each tape can store up to 160GB data if compressed. We managed to get the drive for around £700 and then bought a number of tapes. It was delivered direct from Quantum within a week. The one... Read review
