Qubz Slimline

Qubz Slimline

A handful of years ago I found myself in need of a disc drive, after getting through my third laptop ( Dell & Toshiba make diabolical machines) I decided to save up and find my own laptop (admittedly with a small, part time budget back then) instead of gratefully accepting a computer from my parents as a very big gift on my birthday or at Christmas. So I find the tiddliest of laptops, I think it was called a Zoostorm which is a seriously small computer - it was in the Argos catalogue so that shows you my level of ineptitude half a decade ago. So little was this bit of tech that it didn't have a drive - something I eventually found myself needing for various college projects. I recall at the time, the Amazon listing being rather insufficient - a lack of specifications and capabilities as well as coherent reviews (Well it IS Amazon) So like a fool, I purchased this in good faith, believing it stood a chance at fulfilling all my disc based needs.

Lo and behold, I unpack the drive, plug in both cables, one a USB 2.0 to 1.1 the other an AC power adapter, open it up, pop a disc in and rip the music. Noise was a slight whirring sound and heat was a gradual one but nothing majorly worrying. Software was next, even on those mini-discs some products come with - all installed on a basic laptop running Windows XP - no problems. The tray is a little rickety but aren't all disc trays? Well, aside from the ones that automatically eject though they can have problems if things are in the way (the best trays aren't trays at all but slots). As for anything else, well, it's rather limited. What is more telling about the age of this product is the compatibility list - 2000, XP, Vista / Mac OS 10.3 - so a good 3 generations of operating system out of date. Ciao and their Specific Criteria got it wrong here with Memory / capacity as it's a Disc Drive, not a Harddrive, hence a 0 rating aka very poor. What it can do:
  • Play CDs.
  • Rip CDs.
  • Install Software.

What it can't do:
  • Burn CDs.
  • Play DVDs.
  • Write DVDs.
Price, Availability & Verdict

Bought on the 18th of January, 2010 from Amazon for a then, reasonable £17.99 plus £3.95 P&P for a total of £21.94. Now though the price has going up a pound and what's even more criminal is that these are going for £30 as well thanks to different marketplace sellers. I really did want to properly slate this device and give it a well deserved 1-star rating but the bottom line is, it does what it's supposed to - read CD-ROMS - even if the marketing team did gloss over its capabilities, it never strictly said it could do them in the first place. In contrast to that, this bit of tech really is outdated now and it's no stretch of the imagination to label it obsolete with current stats proving digital downloads and streaming to rule the roost in terms of music format as well as the large database that is Youtube. Disc trays in general are slowly on the way out with a lot of well known manufacturers neglecting the opportunity to include them in their products. So all that really leaves this for is the odd software you may have to install with an accompanying product - and chances are, you can find an installer online anyway. So there you have it, an essential item for those lacking a disc tray, with no internet access, wanting to play their old CDs and install old software....

Alright fine, 1-Star.
