Advantages Advantages Warmth, complexity, and insights into life in moderrn Ireland

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Somewhat predictable

[Note: This review disclosures key plot elements.] For Maeve Binchy fans who fell in love with Tara Road, Scarlett Feather, or Evening Class, Quentins represents a return to familiar territory. Indeed, one wonders if the theme pursued in this novel--that of documenting the history of modern Dublin as seen through the lives of customers and staff at a popular restaurant--isn't an apt paradigm for what Binchy has done with this whole series of Dublin-based novels. Like other books by Binchy, Quentins is better than your average "romance" fiction. The characters are stronger and more fully formed ... more

Advantages Advantages Entertaining, endearing and so easy to read

Disadvantages Disadvantages Refused to answer the phone whilst reading it

I couldn't wait to get my hands on Quentins when I first saw it on the shelves last autumn. In fact, the only time I ever buy hardbacks is when it's Maeve Binchy,as I can never wait long enough for the paperbacks to appear. So you have guessed that I am a fan of hers! Having read them all, my boyfriend groaned when I bought my copy of Quentins for a mere £9.99 in my local Sussex Stationers bookshop.I couldn't put the book down, let answer the phone when necessary! Maeve once again captures your attention within the first few pages and you immediately become wrapped up in the comfort of warmth ... more

Advantages Advantages Once you start reading you can't stop. Totally engrossing story.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Only the feeling of sadness when the book ends!

What a brilliant book. I am a big Maeve Binchy fan and have read every one of her books. All of her books are set in Ireland and the characters really reflect the Irish warmth, humour and community spirit. Maeve Binchy is so good at capturing the thoughts and feelings of people - you feel part of the story within minutes as it is so easy to relate to. I loved her last book, Scarlet Feather, but Quentins was even better because: a) she involved characters from previous titles in this story, such as the twins from Scarlet Feather and Ria from Tara Road, along with a host of new great characters ... more

    Advantages Advantages good engrossing read

    Disadvantages Disadvantages slightly predictable

Quentins restaurant has featured in many of Binchy's Dublin based novels and this time round it is the focus of the action. Its a wonderful opportunity to get to know Brenda Brennan, the cool and mysterious hostess of the restaurant, and an excellent way of bringing together some of Binchy's favourite characters from other stories. It is a delight to meet these old characters again, and to hear about them from a different perspective. It is perhaps a little *too* convenient that so many of the character's lives interact and overlap but no moreso than in any soap opera. Readers with good ... more

Advantages Advantages Irish blood is a bonus

Disadvantages Disadvantages If you don't think Irish, you might struggle

First occasion in Binchy's lap. Initially shocked to find myself having to read with an Irish tilt. However, once I got around the here & now and every which way but thou' (because it was a bit all over the place), eventually I enjoyed the book. Quentins is the restaurant everyone could want to own; filled with history, people, characters, past present & future and possibly more, profit, gain, loss and challenges, it grabbed me. Plumed out with many characters; some meeting, some not, yet all interacted, the story unfolds to connect virtually everyone in the script, not necessarily known to ... more
