Is it effective for heavy periods?
I've had to come off of the combined pill for medical reasons so I'm now looking at other options to prevent pregnancy and to control heavy painful periods. Does the Myrena Coil do those things? I'm also a little freaked out by the procedure, did it hurt at all? Can you feel anything when it's in? Thanks.

Mirena is 99.9% effective for preventing pregnancy. In most women, it will reduce periods and may even stop them altogether, though a few get atypical bleeding. A good IUD insertion is about as painful as a smear test, but a bad one can be pretty unpleasant. Get a doctor who is very experienced, e.g. does IUD clinics every week, ask for local anaesthetic, and do relaxation techniques during the insertion. I'm on my third IUD (copper type).
